Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
Quality tone that is in-your-face alive! I really dig them. They are somewhere in between humbuckers and singles. I would not be able to "replace" either of those in a guitar collection with P90s, but it's nice to have something different in your arsenal. Chords are clear, not muddy, which having a lead bite at the same time. I see using them for blues-based rock. You could go into hard rock as well, but humbuckers would probably be a better weapon there.
Compared to humbuckers and single coils, these pickups are definitely a different breed. When cranked through a good tube amp, they blow me away. On a lead channel they just sound really alive, picking up player nuances. Great gritty distortion tone, but not as thick as a humbucker. I prefer the bridge tone over the neck, which is a little too bassy for me.
Pricey, but if this is your thing then it's probably worth the investment. I have not had the luxury of comparing this to other manufacturer P90 clones.
Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
These pickups are okay. That's all. I opted for Lindy Fralin P-90's and am very happy. There is a huge difference. They are less expensive, too. Boutique pickup manufacturers also allow you to specify how over- or under-wound the pickups are, which is a very important factor to consider, especially because you want your neck pickup to be under-wound relative to your bridge pickup. I wouldn't buy Gibson P-90's.
Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
This pickup came stock in a Les Paul Junior I own. P-90s are my favorite pickup and while the new Gibsons sound slightly different than the vintage P-90s I've heard, they're not far off. Perhaps some sweat and age will make them even better. Thicker mids than a Fender style single coil, but brighter than a humbucker. A mean, raw, and nasty sound. I can even get country twang out of mine with some amp knob turning.
Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
These came standard on my Gibson SG Classic. They sound awesome. Plus, they are the classic pickup that was used by so many guitarists in the 60's, including my favourite, Pete Townshend. You can not go wrong with this classic, vintage pickup!
Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
I put these babies into my old les paul deluxe (which was in need of new pickups) and they are very flexible with their tone. You can go from country to death metal. Yeah they are noisy, but not as noisy as people say. If you dont like any noise just get a noise gate. I use a boss ns-2 and it does fine. They did really good without it. Yhey sound like single coils when clean or with srv style distortion, and humbuckers with rock distortion. If you want a good sound pair these babies up with a good amp and you will sound perfect. Buy these and you wont be the least bit sorry.
Comments about Gibson P90 Single Coil Pickup:
hi,Played a Les Paul Special dual-cutaway with these pickups....wow! I was impressed cuz I have a stigma with single coils. The guitar was able to deliver punchy, thick(not muddy), and rather crisp sounds through a cheap 15w Fender(make the guitar work people!). The sound was impressive, no feedback, clarity, and no annoying treble sounds. Handled palm-mutes with ease, and power chords as well. I was surprised. Ran it through my Mesa for fun, and the guitar rose to the occassion.
