Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL 1/4" Epiphone Slotted Nut - Aged White:

Giving it 1 of 5 stars for the following... Based on the product title - Epiphone Slotted Nut I assumed that it would be a drop in replacement for the existing nut on my asian-made Epiphone Les Paul standard (1996 Korean-made - Fine Guitars plant). Not sure what Epiphones the TUSQ/GraphTech folks are using for a dimension reference, but the TUSQ nut I received measured 44mm long (acrosss). The factory OEM nut on my guitar measured 43mm. I contacted GraphTech customer support to see what nut they advised for my guitar and their response was that I should buy their 1/4" Epiphone Slotted nut?!? I told the support guy their 1/4" Epiphone nuts were too long by 1mm and his response was to file it down till it fits. All this to say, if you are looking for an exact drop-in replacement it would be a very good idea to visit GraphTech's website and check their dimensions against that of your guitar. This is probably a great product, but it may require professional installation if you really want it to look and play right. Might be a nice customer service touch if Musician's Friend did a small disclaimer to the effect of "measure your guitar's dimensions as the TUSQ nut may not be a direct drop-in replacement for all Epiphones."

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL 1/4" Epiphone Slotted Nut - Aged White:

I installed one of these on my Epiphone Masterbilt DR-500MCE because I had problems with the strings hanging up in the original nut. It's fairly easy to do, but a little time consuming. Removal of the old nut is easy. Just score around it with an sharp knife to keep from chipping the lacquer, and give it a gentle tap with a small hammer and wood block. It took me about 2 hours total to get the new nut to the spec I needed and installed. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND using a digital caliper for measuring, since a millimeter one way or the other can make a world of difference in the action and tone. Don't forget to run some fine grit sandpaper through the string grooves to smooth any rough edges.
I was pleasantly surprised with the end result. Not only did it take care of the sticky string problem, It stays in tune better, and the tone improved considerably. The guitar sounded great before, but it now has a clarity it previously lacked. I'll be installing TUSQ XL nuts on my other guitars.
