Hand-selected for musical quality.

The Groove Tubes GT-12AU7 preamp tube is based on a design from the Ei factory in the former Yugoslavia. The GT-12AU7 is an excellent quality large-plate European-made driver tube, styled after the famous Telefunken line of dual triodes. The usual application for a 12AU7 tube is as the phase inverter that drives the power tubes. These are very well matched, and so are highly recommended for Ampeg SVT's and other amps using this tube as a phase inverter. Also commonly used as phase inverters in McIntosh Hi-Fi amps, some Ampeg amps, and will yield the most clean headroom in many amps.

In the latest Fender Pro Series amps such as the Pro Reverb, Concert, and Twin, this tube in V2 (or a 12AY7), will drop the gain of the gain channel where some feel the tone is of a less intense or "buzzy" character. This will then allow a much wider range in the sweep of the volume and gain controls of this channel.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-12AU7 Preamp Tube:

This preamp tube worked well in either V1 or V2 positions (i.e. clean channel and gain channels respectively) in a Fender Hot Rod DeVille.

It helped "tame" the amp down a bit and made the gain channel sound a bit more musical instead of the harsher sound of the 12AX7 tube.

In other words, it warmed up the distortion channel and helped attenuate the clean channel a bit, because this tube has less gain than a 12AX7.

Another alternative is to use a 12AY7 in these positions (i.e. V1 & V2). At the end-of-the-day, I guess it boils down to personal preference in tone and the application it's being used for.

      Helped Brighten My Amp

      By Fender2011

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-12AU7 Preamp Tube:

I have a Crate V18-12 that was a very dark and lifeless sounding amp. I did two things to it recently that made it a much better sounding amp. I put this tube in the phase inverter slot and replace the stock speaker with a Celstion Rocket 50. I replaced the speaker first and I'll give the speaker about 25% of the credit and this tube the other 75% for making my amp sound 100% better.

The speaker and tube change improved everything - brightened it, added more clean headroom, added definition and harmonics and improved the sound when using my Bad Monkey distortion pedal.

      AVERAGE ...

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-12AU7 Preamp Tube:

OK -- just received this tube. It is clearly not the same design as the last GT "gold series" 12AU7 that I purchased a few years ago. And this model has a STICKER on the side, as opposed to a paint job. Sorry to the new owners of the Groove Tubes name, but this model sounds AVERAGE, which for a preamp tube, isn't going to cut it.

Cool Use As a 12ax7 replacement

      By Pirate

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-12AU7 Preamp Tube:

I switched from Groove Tube's 12ax7R to this Groove Tube 12au7 in my Presonus TubePre [I use this tubepre to give a little tube tone to the Seymour Duncan SH-8 pickup in my electric guitar]. The 12ax7r certainly allows for a smoother sound than purely solid state; however, it's kinda dark. The SH-8 pickup is already dark enough. ON THE OTHER HAND, the 12au7 both "smooths" and "brightens." The "smooth" isn't as strong as the 12ax7r, however. Oddly, I can increase drive more on the 12au7 before buzzing occurs.Basically, I'd prefer the 12ax7r for bright or even pickups (regular strat pickups, regular Les Paul pickups, or Seymour Duncan's Dimebucker). I'd prefer the 12au7 for dark pickups (Seymour Duncan's SH8). Lastly, I'd prefer the 12au7 for vocals, for its added brightness. I wonder if anyone can compare these two tubes to their PERSONAL experience of the "new-old-stock" tubes.
