Grover 14 inch Performance Snare System
The sound
Sure, you can add die-cast hoops, and all kinds of accessories to your snare drum. But aside from the shell, the snare wires are still the most vital component in determining the drums sound. The Snares Make All The Difference
While most drum manufacturers supply snare drums with low-quality spiral snares, Grover outfits their snare drums with the highest quality snare system available. After all, why put a cheap $5 set of snare wires on a high-quality drum when the snare wires provide the drum with its fundamental sound

Best Uses

Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:

I have been battling snare buzz for years, either from neighbouring drums, or the bass player. I've tried loosening the rods either side of the snares, tape, tuning variations, different snare drums (thinking it was the snare beds), and on and on. The problem was magnified in the recording studio.

Then I purchased a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare drum from the US, and it came fitted with Patterson cable snares. The sound was dry, articulate, and the snare buzz had almost disappeared- I loved it!
Further investigation revealed the Grover equivalent, which I've used ever since.
Standard spiral snares are just too bright and harsh, and buzz far too much, at least for me.

Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:

I am not claiming to be a surgeon, or a Boy Scout, but I too know how to tie a knot. Really!! I am a drummer though for 49 years, but even at 8 years old, I knew that the string must pass through and be clamped down by the butt plate and the strainer plate holders, not just tied on. So now let's talk about the snare wires. They are an instant improvement to most stock, and even most custom replacement wires I've tried such as PureSound. The wires are actually more like wound guitar steel strings, so they have hundreds of times more contact with the resonant head. They do not stretch and are very evenly tensioned as long as the string or straps are even on each side of the snare ends. I prefer a lighter tension to obtain the most sensitivity, articulation, and without wire buzz. If wire buzz is a problem because of sympathetic vibration with your neighboring toms, this will help reduce that a great deal. Because the wire is not stretchy, like coiled type snare wire, it reduces the amount of turning to go from loose (like a deep field drum) to dry and bright. So just small incremental turning of your throw-off tension adjuster will quickly and accurately control what kind of snare sound you get. I have recorded with these and I would use nothing else but these in a studio setting. For live playing, they project very well. The best thing I find about their sound is the way they sound consistent through the dynamics of accent strokes, rolls, etc. Curly wires tend to bounce off the resonant when you strike the batter hard, thereby losing contact. The resulting notes sound different than lighter strokes. Grover's don't have that problem. This is one of the few products I endorse because it really is worth every penny, and is a product that is designed better than anything else.

Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:

I'm not sure exactly why the other reviewer only rated this item 1 star because of bad snare strings. Many sets of snare wires from cheap to very expensive sets come with strings/straps that I don't find ideal for the job. Most gigging drummers take extra straps/strings to shows. I wouldn't really take a product unused to a gig like that. One I don't know about reliability and two I wouldn't know if I liked the sound. I like the Cannopus straps best and I use them with all my snares.

Anyway back to the review I've used Grover snare wires for years. It's perfect for dialing in your snare exactly how you like it. I'm not endorsed by Grover and use a variety of snare wires from Puresound, Fat Cat, Grover, Black Swamp, Pearl, Tama, real gut, among other obscure/esoteric options.

Grover has three weights available depending on your projetion needs light (jazz), medium (club), and heavy (stadium). They also are available in either dark (bronze) or bright (steel), they also come in a hybrid set containing steel and bronze (orchestral). Because of their design they require less strands which offers great sonic advantages as it dampens the drum less.

These snare wires sound great you will notice heightened sensitivity, more articulation, etc from your drum. Obviously depending on the weight and material you choose it will change the character of your drum from darker to brighter or louder to softer. This is perfect for the discriminating drummer whether your use is orchestral snare or you are using your snare drum on a kit. If you are a musical player you will appreciate the dynamic range these offer.

One word of caution if you are used to using regular coiled snare wires these aren't as durable so be careful overtightening these as you can snap the wires. I'd also suggest that you turn your strainer to the off position when not in use. I'm not going to rank the product less because of this durability issue because it's inherent in it's design and users should be educated on proper use of their gear. Overtightening regular coiled snares can also be damaging I don't rate low because of misuse.

I'd suggest these to any drummer looking to improve their drum without breaking the bank.

    Poor knot security

    By David Hall

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:

The string provided to attach the snare was "slippery", so it was difficult to make a secure knot. (I'm a surgeon, so I know how to tie a knot.) The knot kept slipping during my first time playing out with the new snare, and I had to keep tightening the snare between songs. Obviously, people were standing around waiting for the music every time this happened, so I was rushing to get it tightened. Finally, I over-tightened it, and when I engaged the snare lever, the string snapped. Not cool.
