for that natural sound

By Return2Normal

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

After considerable research I had a Baggs iBeam active installed in my Martin D28 - I'd found the D28 recorded well with a mic, but tended to be boomy when mic'd for live sound reinforcement. An experienced Martin guitar tech installed it for me. I've tried it straight into a mixing board and through a Genz-Benz Shen Pro-LT. It sounds oh so very natural, and gets all the gain I need. It really shines for finger-style. It may not be a good choice in loud environments, as it would probably feedback, but in such situations tonal subtlety is usually less important. It was also important that it was both visually unobtrusive and physically non-invasive. That way it can be replaced - the D28 is likely to outlive the useful life of any pickup system. I am picky about sound quality and am quite happy...price was reasonable too.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I have a Martin D28 1935 remake that this pickup is just fantastic in. It is plugged directly into the church's sound board and it is clean clear and true it sounds unplugged. I have gotten several comments on how great the guitar sounds and how clean the sound is. I have played everything form finger picking to rock and it is fantastic.

Perfect Acoustic Tone

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I have heard no after market pickup that more faithfully reproduces the tone of an acoustic guitar.
Easy install, comes with jig and extra adhesive strips in case you (or your friend), oh I don't know, drop your guitar on the concrete floor of a Masaai church in Kenya and have to send your guitar back to the states for repair, but want to put the pickup into a cheap yahama for the time being. Baggs even sent me and extra jig and adhesives, in Kenya, to install it. And it makes the Yamaha sound very good, even though it doesn't even really sound that good acoustically! An amazing pickup that I will use as long as they are still in production!
Easy to use, easy to install, virtually indestructible, lightweight and invisible. Outstanding quality and design.
I bought mine years ago. The current price is very agreeable and worth every penny if you really care about tone, even if you have a mediocre guitar to install it in!

GOOD, BUT!

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

Although this system does exactly what it claims and does it very well, it may not be what your looking for. Personally, I prefer the LR Baggs Element over the I-Beam. The Element, in my opinion, nails the acoustic sound of my Martin D-18 and is not prone to feedback issues on stage, as the I-Beam is. I would advise anyone to hear a guitar in person with the I-Beam before commiting. I just removed an I-Beam system from my D-18 and installed the Element VTC and couldn't be happier. I would recommend either going with the Element or save up for the I-Mix. I would not recommend the I-Beam alone, unless you were just going to use it for recording only. And by the way, the LR Baggs Element undersaddle is the only undersaddle pickup that I like, it's just that good. It's no wonder that most new Gibson acoustics come standard with the LR Baggs Element. Best pickup on the market in my opinion.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I'll have to admit I was a bit afraid of installing this myself, but it turned out to be relatively easy, even for a clod like me. The only extra thing you'll really need is a drill with a 1/2" step bit. You can get one online really cheap, but they're essential for getting a clean hole for the jack to go though. Also, I got a good pickup placement on the first try on my Martin D1GT--just followed the directions.

The sound is very good--much more realistic to my ears than any soundhole pickup. I've used some really nice ones, but I'd take the plunge and go with something like this, which gives a truer, less mid-rangey sound. Compared to an under-the-saddle pickup the quality is similar without the trickier installation. If installation scares you, there are some good instructional videos on YouTube. But really, if you can handle a drill and some sticky tape, you can handle this.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I installed this system on a Voyage Air guitar that I am going to use when I travel by air to gigs. It was easy to install, as long as you don't mind drilling a hole in your guitar, and produces a clear clean tone that sounds like the guitar. If you are looking for something to make the guitar sound better this isn't it. But if you want it to reproduce the tone and sound of your guitar unplugged this will do the trick.

      Awesome

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

Awesome pickup! I have several acoustic electric guitars and after installing this pickup, it is the best sounding guitar I own when plugged in. Very warm , natural sound, without to much treble. It blows any of the piezo pickups I have ever heard out of the water! It also sounds better than a guitar I have that came factory equipped with the Fishman Sonicore SS transducer system. You absolutely can't go wrong with this system, especially at such a great price. Also, installation is very simple, which if you have a little ambition and do yourself, can save you a good bit of money not having to have a luither put it in. I would deffinately recomend this pickup and will probably be buying another to replace a factory installed piezo system.

      Good for some

      By jdcox

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I bought this pickup due to the reviews and and hearing it in person. I was poorly disappointed with how bright it made my guitar. They say you should buy the L.r. Baggs Para Di (that's how I heard it when I listened to it) if you don't have this or some kind of EQ it will not live up to the hype. Took mine out and replaced it with an old Fishman Ellipse Blend pickup (night and day). If you like the baggs product, get the dual source. A couple of friends have it and it sounds great, nice and warm.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I have put this in 2 guitars. A Martin HD-28V and a Martin D-18V. Sounds just like the guitar unplugged. The pre EQ'd preamp is great. You can plug straight into the board and set it flat and it will sound great. Try that with a Fishman. I have. This pickup sounds so natural. Easy to install. And for the price it is the best. It is worth 2X as much.

      Better than under-saddle piezo

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I just put one of these in my 1980 Takamine F385 12-string during a whole-guitar upgrade (Grover tuners, Tusq saddle and pins, D'Addario DR strings). I can say that I didn't think my guitar could sound this good... full bass, clear crisp treble (without sounding tinny). I had a Fishman under-saddle pickup before that sounded very reasonable but this actually makes the guitar sound better plugged-in than without any amplification. I was able to install it myself in about an hour - very straightfoward and easy. The instructions mention that you can try different mounting positions to get the best sound but noted that directly under the saddle and a couple of millimeters toward the treble side was a good first location to try - this was the one (and only) location I used and can't imagine it sounding any better.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I installed the active Ibeam in a Martin D18 last year and have never experienced less than optimum performance in an onboard pickup. I'm a BIG stickler for natural acoustic sound, and this pickup is the closest I've found. I've added the LR Baggs Para DI for added control, (also highly recommended). Both devices complement each other. I play mostly finger picking, strumming, occasional flat pick. The pickup sounds great amped, or recording into my PC. Two suggestions. When you install it, instead of using the plastic guide that comes with it, just lightly stick it to your undersaddle, check it with a mirror, and adjust as necessary before firmly securing it. A lot easier. Also, the Velcro for the 9V battery holder doesn't always like to stick to the unfinished, inside wood. You may still need glue or duct tape, plus another strip of tape to secure the power wire off the battery so it won't rattle around. Just a little tip. I still am using the soundhole pickup for my 12-string, and as soon as I can afford it, I'm getting another Ibeam for the 12-string.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

The iBeam Active System really reproduced the sound of my vintage Martin better than anything else I have had in it. There was absolutely no piezo sound and I replaced the original factory-installed pickup that did not do this guitar justice.

It Actually Sounds Like My Guitar!

          By Johnboy-fgeoq

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I bought the iBeam Active system for my D-28 Martin to use at a summer camp where I was the music coordinator. This pickup blem me away. I put it on the bridge plate directly under my bridge peice. It gave my guitar full resonance with emphasis on the bass side just like a D-28 should sound. I have never had a pickup that I could use for bluegrass, country, and acoustic rock, but this pickup just sounded so much like my guitar and mixed well in intimate and large venues. I am also getting ready to put one in my Martin D-41. Great pickup!

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

After many problems with my original pickup and pre-amp/equalizer, I decided to take a chance on the L.R. Baggs I-Beam. The installation was very easy and all needed suplies including wire securing tabs were included. It took about an hour as I was very careful and had to disconnect my current system completely. After installing it and even with my old strings and needing a saddle adjustment, I couldn't believe the improvement in sound. This is the best acoustic pickup I have ever used as it duplicates the acoustic sound better than any other system I have used - except a condenser mic. I highly recommend using some sort of equalizer/pre-amp as I had to give it more treble and less bass. I was able to play this guitar loud without alot of feedback.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

This is a great sounding pickup. True mic sound, without problems of extra noise or feedback from a peizo or condensor mic onstage. Great sound. I will say that to cut thru a stage mix with a band, the Imix is really better. The undersaddle pickup gives the stable, level output, and the Ibeam makes your guitar sound like your guitar. For strictly recording or solo performance, the Ibeam is the ticket.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I bought the I-beam about 3 months ago and installed it in an Epiphone Masterbilt EF-500ra.The instalation was a breeze and I guess I got lucky and found the perfect placement on the first try. This pickup sounds great in this guitar.I usually hook in an LR Baggs Gigpro preamp to fine tune and phase but the tone that the endpin preamp puts out is even above the expectations I had.I've heard people say that it's bass and mid heavy but I guess the 00 body style of the EF-500 is just VERY compatible with the pickup.I'm a singer/songwriter in Nashville and I play out 5 nights or more a week.Every night the I-beam rises to occasion and makes my guitar sound like my guitar. The feedback problem is easily fixed by changing the phase on my Gigpro. In the studio,it's a great addition to an acoustic track. It even sounds great recorded by itself. All and all a great product and I will eventually buy one for all of my acoustics.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

Put this in a Martin OM-28. Fairly easy with the proper tools, supplied jig worked well in placing the I-beam in the right place. The peel and stick adhesives worked well. The tone is great, and brings out the rich tone of the Martin. It is natural sounding, no quackiness but perhaps not as sensitive to percussive hand sounds if you're a "thumper". I have had feedback issues in gigging situations, so there is a drawback in not having onboard eq, and you'll probably need to address this with an outboard eq or with the mixing board. Just the same I've been able to manage the slight howl with palm muting. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase. Good price for a high quality pickup/preamp for a vintage guitar.

Comments about LR Baggs iBeam Active Acoustic Guitar Pickup System:

I installed the nylon string model in my LAG T66N. It's an auditorium sized nylon string guitar with a slightly narrower neck than a classical, and a laminated top. The guitar has excellent tone and decent volume alone, but playing it thru a mike was a pain. I took a stab at the IBeam, and what a nice combo! I got the active model with the volume control. It renders the natural sound of the guitar very authentically, and with the volume control, I can make fine tweaks easily on stage. The guitar is not particularly high-end, but the output from the pickup through an amp or PA is excellent for my purposes. I am thinking of buying another for my steel string.
