OVERVIEW

It isn't just about flexibility, it's about bending the note 'til it rings true.

Gauges 11-13-23-28-38-47

Martin SP Flexible Core strings have a thin, but strong core wire and a thicker wrap wire, which allows them to be flexible and easy on the fingers while holding standard tension. SP Flexible Core strings feel soft to the touch, making them ideal for beginners. But don't be fooled by comfort! Just ask Tommy Emmanuel, who performs with Martin's SP Flexible Core strings night after night. With SP Flexible Core, you get total flexibility and total control.

I have played professionally. I'm an old guy now, but I do know strings. When I first tried these strings I gave them a good review, and I stand by what I said originally. There are, however, a couple of things you should know. These strings don't pick up well with a sound hole pickup or on an archtop guitar. They're great for acoustic playing though. Also, if your action is low, be prepared to adjust your truss rod. These strings have less tension. and you may end up with fret buzz. Loosening your truss rod a bit, might eliminate that problem.

I purchased these to put on my parlor guitar so I could play fingerstyle easily and without getting sore fingers as the strings are supposed to be softer on the fingers. They are definitely softer but you definitely lose volume and tone. The strings made my parlor guitar so mellow in tone and quiet in volume that I just considered them not right. If I play fingerstyle blues I do want good tone and these strings seem to sacrifice tone for easy playing and being soft on the fingers. I ended up taking off these strings and putting on D'Darrio 10/47 which are working out great.

If you have an acoustic that requires low-tension strings but don't like the feel and/or tone of "Silk And Steel" I recommend these as an alternative.

Comments about Martin FX130 Silk and Phosphor Acoustic Guitar Strings:

They are indeed flexible which aids in bending and vibrato. The feel is nice and soft. The tone is a tad less bright than phosphor bronze but still projects. Like anything else, you just have to try them. I'm glad I did.
