I bought this case (black pleather one) about five years ago for my Ibanez AX 220, which is an even double cutaway, something like a Gibson ES shape. Over the last five years, I've used the case once or twice each week to ferry my guitar to practice and occasionally to gigs, and it has held up very well. I'm careful when I handle it, but not overly so. No dropping or throwing. It's not exceptionally fancy, but it looks classier than a gig bag. The faux fur on the inside is soft and resilient padding.

I was looking for two things: more protection than a gigbag, and the ability to stack the guitar in a vehicle with other guitars, a full acoustic drumkit, amplifiers, etc. The case does both of these things well. After five years, there are two rips in the pleather from sliding it over a tailgate that snagged it. I stuck them back with super glue, and they don't really show. The foam that cradles the neck has worn down towards the feet of the case from the weight of the guitar, and it can move a bit inside. It's not far enough to let the head stock touch the side, but it's noticeable when the case is stood on end.

The compartment is pretty spacious and doesn't show any wear from the guitar neck. It holds the head stock far enough away from the bottom of the case so that the tuning keys aren't disturbed. None of the latches or hinges have broken. I never use the lock, so I can't speak to it's quality. The body of the case is plywood which makes it sturdy but heavy compared to an ABS case or gig bag. I've never jumped up and down on it, but I've had a 75 lb guitar amp on top of it on the way to and from shows with no complaints. I would not trust it in a big fall or a car accident, nor would I expect it to survive as luggage handled by other people, but that's not really the price range we're in here.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with this guitar case. I'd recommend it to anybody looking for a sturdy, universal case at an affordable price.

It didn't survive shipping...or more likely, it didn't survive the warehouse, as the packaging had no damage. My tweed case arrived with a 4" crack in the wood under the storage area. I am glad that it did arrive damaged as, if it had arrived intact I probably would have been too lazy to return it. Remember, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, which is...not much. The hinges on the handle do not look trustworthy either.

If you still are considering this case, here are the true dimensions (these should be included in the descriptions of all cases):

Interior (wood to wood) : 41" x 14"
Body area (padding to padding) 12 1/2" wide x 19" long
Total length (thin felt at headstock to padding at bottom) 40" + 1" divot for strap button

I bought this for my GRB Kokocaster (nice Surfcaster knockoff). The width was a perfect fit but lengthwise I had about an inch of play.

Although my review is negative, it is only negative about the product...MF, as always, has been expedient and accommodating.

Guitar Case stands the test!

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

My son borrowed his brother's Deluxe Electric Guitar Case to take his bass to camp. While there, someone backed their car onto the grass and right over the case with his brand new 1951 vintage base inside. Let's just say that he now owes his brother a new case, but the guitar didn't get touched! This case goes above and beyond the call of duty...and it looks great too! Thanks for a terrific product!

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

Look. I like Musicians Friend, Guitar Center, and these cases. I bought a black one a few months ago in a sale and got a great deal on a decent black hard shell. So, when the ad came up showing the Tweed at 46 simoleons, it looks like a great deal, and it would have been. But, the picture tweed and the 46 buck price did not match up. It was the black one, with the tweed at over sixty. I don't know about you, but, although these are both okay prices for an okay case, I don't think Musicians Friend should be using any of these "Bait and Switch" tricks to get me, or you, to look. You picture the tweed at 46, you should offer it at 46, and not try to fool people into responding. This really lowers my opinion of both MF and their parent.

        • Be your own roadie

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I own one of the tweed and one of the black cases. It does the job for local gigs when you are your own roadie and you have control over how it's treated during transport and load in/out. If you're dumb enough to use one of these for your five-grand "precious investment axe" (or dumb enough to trust airline baggage handlers with it), then you deserve whatever happens. However, for a five-hundred Mexi-Strat it's perfectly fine. Really.

Black Case: The neck pocket doesn't seem to hold the guitar securely; when you pick up the case by the handle you can feel the guitar shift downward. I solved this problem by cutting a piece of cardboard to size and wedging it between the neck pocket and the hinge-side of the case (easy fix).

Tweed Case: This one is heavier and fatter than the black case and seems to have more cushion, making the guitar a tighter fit. The tweed cloth on the outside is subject to stains, rips, etc. but it certainly looks prettier than the black until that happens. My biggest annoyance with this model is that the hinges stick out farther than the feet; the case wobbles when you set it down. This is more difficult to fix since the feet are held in place by rivets instead of screws.

Bottom line: Fifty beans is a fair price but I wouldn't pay a penny more for either one. If you see these being offered for more money, shop elsewhere or wait for a sale.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I have a BUNCH of these cases, and for the price asked, they are unequalled. In fact, I just bought 4 more, black, 2 Bass, 2 Guitar, so I can get a few more out of Gig-Bags for storage. These are not heavy duty, so do not try to stand on them or toss them around like a Road-Case. Clean up your "Pile-o-Axes" by Casing them and standing them in a row. Nice, neat, tidy. They even fit 2 high when you use a "bass(or guitar)on bottom/guitar on top" approach, although bass/bass is too tall for most ceilings. Stencil your name/band name/axe # on the Black cases or plaster it with stickers if you want to, it's all good. One drawback is the "Potato Chip Syndrome" you'll get once you get one of your loose Axes into a case, because, then, EVERY other loose Axe in your Harem will have to have one, too! I have Ibanez RB & SDGR Basses, RG's, LP's, SG's, PRS's, Strats, a Tele', and a Mockingbird in my cases, and they are all happy! Don't go beatin' the snot out of them and they'll work great, for the budget, as well as for their intended use. I WILL be back for more, count on it!!

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I just bought the tweed version of this case and own the tweed Fender case made by G&G Quality Case that it replicates. So, I am able to literally compare them side by side.

This case is half the cost, but doesn't have quite as good a fit and finish. The lid of the compartment feels like it may be cardboard, rather than masonite and much of the lining seems haphazardly glued down.

That being said, I think it is a very good value. If you have prized Custom Shop American Tele, maybe you should splurge on a better case. If it is a beat up Modern Player, maybe this case makes more sense.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I ordered the black case. This is the perfect light duty case for basic storage and protection in the house, trekking it to lessons or the studio. The build quality is decent; it will not withstand heavy abuse like touring or air travel. The latches are on the lite side as far a quality. The interior is quite nice, no smell and fits my Kramer with reverse head stock perfectly. Yes there are much better cases out there but for the recreational player and the person who babies his case and guitar this case will work fine. Better than a gig bag, you can sticker up the case which is always cool.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I think I have pretty much covered it all. It needs bottom feet, the tweed covering has irregularities, the brass corners are ill-fitting and cheesy, and the case just doesn't have as sturdy a feel as the genuine Fender tweed case. From 3 or 4 feet, you won't be able to tell that it is not a genuine Fender case.
It has storage just like the genuine Fender case, and the inside looks great. It will be well-protected. It has folding latches instead of spring latches. There are no feet on the flat bottom where they are needed the most.
If you look at a side of the case, you can see irregularities where the tweed should be flat and smooth. There needs to be feet when it is laid flat to open. The corner brass are ill-fitting and cheap looking.
The case will adequately protect your guitar. What can you expect for the price? I wanted a tweed case for my strat, but couldn't see shelling out a lot for a case. You get what you pay for.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

I saw "Bulky" listed in the 'Cons' section of this review form...I moved it to 'Pro' because that is one of the things I like most about this Case. You can fit a LOT of extra stuff in them (folders, pedals, chords, etc...) and pack them in tight with a towel or something so they don't move around and scratch your guitar.
I have one of each. The Tweed with red lining is so cool and retro, I get compliments every time I leave the house with it.
Don't let the price fool you...these cases are just as good as anything you pay two or three times the money for. Hard and sturdy, strong buckles, etc...just plain and simple great bargain.
If you have a guitar, and you need a case, and you don't atleast consider this one, you are a fool.
My case does not have to "advertise" the guitar inside. I don't need it to say Fender or Gibson on it (for a hundred bones more)...people will see I play Fender when I pull the guitar out.
Just for you Fender people---this case will fit Stratocaster and Telecaster (and I'd imagine Mustangs and Jaguars as well).

Not "one size fits all"~ Make sure regarding dimensions. Fits my Strat well, not so my SG (not deep enough to accommodate headstock rake angle). This is a good, stay- at-home kind of case, with sturdy shell and good soft, cushy protection inside. Don't plan on using it for your world tour, however. Can't beat it for the money.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case:

For an economy priced hard-shell guitar case, this gets the job done. I recently bought a Danelectro (Jimmy Page style) and it did not have a case with it. It fits perfectly. All my other guitars have the factory case, but I tried a few just to see what fits, and most do. Stratocaster, Telecaster, Rickenbacker 335, Les Paul and a few others. Fit in snug and the case closed and latched just fine if I ever needed it for any other guitar. Not as solid as my Gretsch or Hofner cases, but not nearly as expensive either. Overall, a good case for a good price.
