Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

Several friends bought Peak stands, and I was impressed by the folding deck design. For years I have carried a solid, metal-deck stand. It works great, but it's bulky. The folding deck makes the entire stand (when collapsed) only slight larger than the folding base of my previous stands. And the plastic deck reduces the overall weight of the stand.

I purchased the 30/50 model because it lists a higher maximum height than the 20/40. I sometimes need a stand while standing, and being 6' 1", I want to be able to look ahead rather than looking down, especially if I need to watch a conductor. The 30/50 is taller than any stand I have used before. I can place the deck above my sightline if needed.

Another difference between the 30/50 and the 20/40 is the tripod base. The legs on these stands simply fold out. There is no clutch or screw to set the spread of the legs. That's not a problem at all. But what I like about the 30/50 is that the center post of the tripod sits lower to the ground than the 20/40. The lowers the center of gravity slightly. I also reduces the angle of the leg, which is convenient if I'm playing outside and need to put a foot on my stand to keep it from blowing away. The lighter deck also helps the stand from being top-heavy.

The stand sections adjust with clutches rather than screws. I prefer this for quick height changes when they are needed.

The stand includes a canvas carrying bag, which has enough extra room to hold a stand light and a few other items.

I still have my solid-deck stands, but the Peak has become my primary portable stand.

Wonderful TALL stand for sitting AND standing

By Anonymous

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

I'm a violinist so I need a tall enough stand to practice and play both sitting and standing. I also wanted something collapsible because I'm on the road a lot. This is perfect. It's lightweight, packs down quickly and to a small size, and is very sturdy. Adjusts easily and securely and holds a lot of music. I've been using this for about 6 months and would definitely buy again.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

While this stand is a treasured part of my kit, it is only suitable for personal handling. Gorillas (roadies) would destroy it in one minute. It fits well in my Miata trunk with room left for my horn. Excellent for traveling light. Know the limitations.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

Needed the size and stability of a full-size orchestra stand with full portability. The Peak stand does the job perfectly.

The 5-section back plate accordion-folds and rotates to let the stand fit the included 30"x6"x6" gig bag. When deployed, the back plate is held flat and rigid by the bottom shelf, which slides into a groove that stretches across all back plate sections -- simple yet ingenious. Follow the instructions once or twice and you'll be able to set up and tear down in minutes (the origami part).

Post and tripod base have quick-release clamps to allow height adjustment. Back plate and shelf are plastic, while post and tripod on the tall version are aluminum (there are aluminum and steel versions of both the short and tall Peak stands). Gig bag's attached strap is non-adjustable, but is long enough to be shouldered.

Do you get the short or tall version? The difference appears to be the short version post has 2 sections and would be adequate if you always play sitting down, while the tall version has 3 sections and covers sitting to standing for a 6-footer. Tripod might be smaller on the short version.

To summarize, if a wire stand won't cut it, and a regular stand (including those that partially collapse) is too cumbersome, the Peak is the ticket. Will all the plastic survive being knocked over or dropped? My guess is it depends on the nature of the mishandling, but the consideration is not enough to trump the stand's lightness, convenience, and portability. Take care of it, and it should last a long time.

I am definitely a fan of this stand. I just bought it recently so it works great right now. We'll see how long it lasts for. I feel comfortable putting a fair amount of books on it without worrying about it falling. Having said that, it doesn't seem quite as sturdy as a metal manhasset stand so it's not a complete replacement. But it's definitely a great stand to travel with.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

A flutist friend said she had one of these and really liked it. I've been using a fold-up silver stand for years, and decided to take her advice and get a real stand (that folded up) instead. What a pleasure. Easy to set up (once I read the instructions), folds in just a few seconds into its cute carry bag. Adjusts for playing while both standing and sitting; very stable because of its low and widespread legs. (That might be a problem in tight performance places.) Angle adjusts, shelf is wide. Only thing I wish it had is a second shelf for pencil, etc.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

I ordered both the cheaper as well as this more expensive model. It was surprising to note the more expensive model which is also taller is LIGHTER. That will be helpful when carrying instruments and other gear as well as a music stand to gigs. The tripod legs also have a lower profile to the ground on this stand. May not make a big difference but I suspect it may slide into compact spots more easily. After trying both out, I kept this one and returned the other. Both good.

I am very impressed with the quality of this stand. It's so nice to be able to throw the bag over my shoulder to transport and end up at the gig with a stand that looks every bit as good as a typical black music stand. Very light yet solid construction. A must have for a gigging musician.
