I've had my Petersen stand for more than 10 years and I know my work would be a lot more difficult without it. With all due respects to the nay-sayers on this, the legs stay on if you set and push them into the channels as the directions say. My 8-year old grand daughter has no problem setting up this stand (she's done it many times and used it for her own rehearsals for musical theatre). It does not have some means of keeping the music on the stand in the wind at outdoor gigs, but a good utility clamp or a defunct clamp capo works great for that. I've used it under all kinds of situations with few problems if any. My group has a standing repertoire of over 300 songs, and I also play solo gigs, studio dates, open-air festivals, and instructional programs at schools in both indoor and outdoor venues. It fits well under my mic on stag, and the tripod setup is reliable. It does seem almost edged when it's holding one of my huge binders of over 200 pages, but it hasn't not held up. The only problem I ever had was that my height tension adjustment came loose and I put it back in with Tite-bond, and that was after 5 or 6 years of heavy use. It transports easily, and I should get a bag, but the shop I bought it from didn't have the bags and I haven't gotten around to getting one. It beats the school-band kind of metal stands that can only hold small folios. It beats hauling around my other stands, and it is lightweight for sure. There is another folding stand out that is similar, but I haven't tried it, but it does weigh more that the Petersen by a few pounds, and weight considerations were a factor for me. Like anything in this world some people are harder on their gear than others, but I haven't seen the complaints others have had. My only contention is that I'm not sure how it holds up going as airline checked baggage. I'll be trying this later in the year. I've already got my carry-ons covered with my instruments. I recommend it highly but if you're rough on your gear or tend to take out your frustrations emulating The Who's early years, plastic WILL be a problem. If that's the case, try some other method of holding your music. I see Musician's Friend has the bags for a good price, which is why I came across this review board. Will order one as soon as my tour in finalized so I can try it on the airline.

Here is another vote for "brilliant idea, badly made" for the Peterson Folding Music Stand. I love the idea that all the stand parts close up into a compact little box. I like having a solid page support (as opposed to wires), and having it fold in half to make it fit in a gig bag is great. However, all the screws that allow this to happen are plasti-on-plastic, and they get stuck to the extent it requires tools to unstick them. The legs are cheap (one of mine broke the first time I put it together) and fall out when you pick the stand up. Also, the tripod spread of the legs can't be adjusted, which is a problem in tight spaces. I wish they would re-engineer this idea with better materials and design details.

Please redesign

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

Cool gadget - tear down and assemble idea is good. Performance is bad. The desk never fully unfolded correctly. After a few months the pole started releasing and the stand would slide down. The last straw occurred during a performance where one of the legs popped out while on stage and the entire stand collapsed with music flying everywhere. Great effect, but not intended...

Very Badly Made - even worse customer service

By Alan Ferentz

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

Wrote the company a year ago, still waiting for a part on back order. No way a company can go a year with no inventory.
Nice, but totally non-functional
Base fell apart after just a few uses.
Considering it is a throw away product, way overpriced

Do Not buy this piece of crap.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

Great concept, but not sturdy or reliable.
This stand is a piece of crap . I had it for 1 month and the piece you put the music on is now stuck at a 90 degree angle!! I can not close it or open it. Great idea to have one that breaks down to a small case, but if you do not know how to manufacture it for use, then stop ripping people off! Junk.

Not for frequent use

By Carol B. Eder

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I am a guitar teacher. I needed a light weight music stand for 2-4 students per class with easy set up and compact storage. After using these stands for almost a year, the legs fall off, the folding case that holds the sheet music gets I regret having bought these music stands. When they are new, they work fine, but after repeated use they do not hold up.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I'm a gigging musician and I purchased this music stand specificly to use on outdoor festivals where the backline doesn't include music stands. Working my way from the parking lot to the stage through large crowds with a conventional music stand was clumsy, awkward and inevitably somebody got poked. Now, I just throw it in my backpack and the crowd is safe!
The portability is just what I was looking for.
Other reviewers have Dogged this product. If it were made of Titanium or Carbon Fiber it would cost substantially more.
I think it's a great value for the price!

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I was very hopeful about this stand because of its obvious portability. It appeared to be as sturdy as a full metal stand and not flimsy like those light weight wire ones. I was wrong.

Although over time, I think assembly would go smoother, overall, for the most part it takes more time to assemble than my instrument (I play flute). After the 2nd use, the whole bottom half of the tube (just underneath where you tighten it) came unglued (glue was holding it on???) and slid off. Also, the tightening knob itself is so locked into place that you cannot twist it. So you cannot tighten or loosen it. I can only use the stand at its lowest height (without the outer metal tube on it, just the "inner thin tube" holding it up. Unsatisfied customer who is now on the search for yet another stand..... :(

Classic Stand

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I play classical guitar at restaurants and special events and needed a lightweight, portable music stand. The Petersen Stand is perfect for me and I haven?t had any problems. Naturally, care should be taken when you?re setting it up and resist the urge to over-tighten some of the parts! If you need the stand to hold something the size and weight of a Fake Book every night, you may want to consider something heavier duty but for every other use?I strongly recommend it.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

The music stand is definitely light weight, and the folding tray acts as a carrying case for all the parts. But it is time consuming to assemble and disassemble. Otherwise the stand serves its purpose.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I didn't get even one use out of Petersen Music stand. After I assembled it very first time it collapsed as soon as legs touched the floor. One of the legs would not hold in the grooves. I reattached that leg and inserted it into the groove again, and the same thing happened: collapsed. It was rather embarrassing for me since I assembled it in front of my student for whom I bought this stand as a graduation present. No more plastic stands for me (or my students). Lighter weight is not always the way to go. The only thing I liked about this stand was its idea, but not the performance.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

This is a terrific music stand. The only weakness is that after prolonged use, the brackets that hold the legs may eventually break ( as they did on my other stand) & must be super glued. A canvas pouch is also available, which makes it easier to carry.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I bought this to take to dulcimer class and now use it at home. This is my second purchase. After several years, the tightening thing split. I think I just kept over tightening. The whole still works well at the low height for home use. I have bought a new one to take to a harp conference. Everything fits inside itself and is lightweight to carry.

    Great Performer

    By JamBand-_ds4T

    from Toronto

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I bought this stand 2 years ago after searching everywhere for a functional compact gig stand. It?s been a fantastic performer. A friend of mine bought one last November and had to get one of the legs replaced, but the company sent her a replacement part immediately. She was told that a bad batch of resin had caused a lot of failures, but the issue has been fixed; probably why some reviews are unfavorable. I would definitely buy this stand again, especially since company backs warranty.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

No assembly inst - that's okay, figured it out. Good ideas, nice shelf for large binders BUT, those nice metal legs slide into cheap plastic sleves. What happens: all 3 legs fall off, stand collapses & stuff is scattered. Been laughed at during jams........solved problem - sent for diff stand. Also, the LEGS WON'T FALL OFF IF U "GORILLA GLUE" EM ON LIKE WE DID. No longer portable but sturdy.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I bought this stand as an alternative for the bulky full-size stands that I've used all my life. As a gigging musician, compactness is a premium and the Petersen stand certainly is that. Set-up is a bit of a Rubik's Cube, but anyone of average intelligence can manage it. It stores within its own folding desk which is a great feature. It takes up less room than a notebook when stored! The big drawback is the lack of durability of the parts - the stand broke within three or four gigs - the tightening sleeve broke rendering the stand useless. I was very disappointed that this unit broke so quickly. Spend the money on a Manhassett stand instead.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I was excited about using this stand, since it looks great and folds conveniently. The second time I used it, however, one of the legs cracked where it inserts into the track. I was in a professional performance situation, and ended up having to use a chair to put my music on. (taping it didn't work) I want my money back. I don't think I could ever rely on this product. I can't believe anyone would sell something this shoddy.

This is NOT for the gigging musician! I wanted durability and portability and all I got was portability. I had it a week and the table, leg, and tightening mechanism all cracked. Not worth the money. Buy a cheaper metal music stand and you'll be a lot happier. Buy a Hercules stand and you?ll probably never buy another! I did.

    Surpassed Expectations

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I've been using the Petersen folding stand for the past couple years and have had good performance from both it and the company behind it. Many people comment on its light-weight and portability whenever I take it on the road.... mostly from people who are hauling around one of those metal "Man....." stands. The only problem I've had with mine is the threaded nut recently cracked, but the company replaced it immediately, free of charge. I was hesitant at first to go this route, but the stand has surpassed my expectations.
