OVERVIEW

Great deal for the woodwind doubler.

Rico's Multi-Instrument Reed Case is designed to hold eight saxophone or clarinet reeds, and this special package includes three 73% humidity Reed Vitalizer packs at no additional cost. In order to promote proper air flow, and prevent early deterioration, the reeds rest on a slotted base that also keeps the reeds flat. The Rico Reed Case is the only case to feature two-way humidity control for a consistent sound and feel in an inconsistent environment.

Comments about Rico Multi-Instrument Reed Case with 3 Vitalizer Refills:

This case is great! I play all different sizes of clarinet, and was able to fit a contrabass clarinet reed in this case without a problem. The humidity control is a nice touch as well, especially with how dry it usually is where I live. I wasn't expecting it to be the quality it was for the price, but it's pretty sturdy thus far and the latch seems to be pretty strong. Even though the latch is plastic, it seems like it's pretty hard to break.

Comments about Rico Multi-Instrument Reed Case with 3 Vitalizer Refills:

I have been using Vitalizer packs for about a year and a half. I am very happy with the humidity control system. My reeds last five or six months as opposed to five or six weeks, if I don't accidentally hit them first.
My first complaint is the fact that the case is opaque. A humid, dark case is literally the best possible environment for mold. Luckily, it's easy to fend it off by sterilizing your reeds in peroxide and shaking a little in the case every week or two, and your reeds play better and last longer anyway, but it would be ridiculously easy to compensate for the mold by making the case using clear plastic. On the bright side, the mold won't touch the humidity pack.
My other complaint is with the lifetime of the case. After about a year, the gasket on mine stopped sealing and the humidity was just barely allowed to diffuse. Unfortunately, the pack lost its effectiveness gradually, so I only caught it after my reeds started to suffer playing-wise, and it probably shortened their lifespans. I had to double-bag the case in sandwich bags until I got a replacement.
I am still using the Vitalizer humidity packs, but I'm keeping them and my reeds (in ReedGards) inside a 6oz TightVac canister now. It's huge, but it's clear and it's easy to notice a broken seal should it ever fail (plus I can keep more than 8 reeds around).
For the price, I'm fine with what I got here, but there's some room for improvement with the case.

Comments about Rico Multi-Instrument Reed Case with 3 Vitalizer Refills:

This is my second case. It was almost free given the four (3 plus 1 with case) Vitalizer packs it comes with. I figure I can keep this one in my sax case, while the original one goes with my clarinet.

Holds 8 reeds securely against a ribbed backing. Lately the Vitalizer packs have only been lasting a month. Where I am the relative humidity is in the low 20's during the winter, so I suspect that there is some ingress of arid air past the o-ring seal. During the summer the packs were lasting a couple of months.

Hard to wrong at its price.
