I have purchased several of these pads, for myself and as gifts. They are and do what they claim.
DO NOT leave them on guitars with Nitro finishes any longer then you need to, they will create a blemish after time. Keep the plastic backer it's shipped with for storage when it's not on the guitar.
The Scratch Pad finish protector is easy to use and re-use. Does not damage or leave residue on the back of your axe.
If it's kept clean, the static surface sticks again and again.... Easy to clean with soap and water, air dry, and it's ready to go again.
Despite being fairly thin, it prevents the cold sweats brought on by that big buckled buddy grabbing your guitar before you realize it.

The warnings for this protector caution against putting anything on the guitar that prevents a new (1 year or less) nitro finish from "breathing" and leaving it there during storage. They really should overemphasize the first part of that warning. They should have written: do not ever put anything on a new nitro finish under any circumstances and if you have a new nitro finish put this product down and walk away. Erroneously, I thought placing it on the guitar for a short span would be OK so long as I don't store it with the protector. I was disappointed (actually, more like enraged) when, after 15 minutes, I removed the protector from my 2012 Gibson Les Paul and could still see lines where the protector's edge was as well as outlines of all the bubbles.

I used polishes and cleaners, and even Meguiar's Scratch X, but nothing would remove it. The lines and bubble outlines were somewhat difficult to see, and showed up best in sunlight, but they were definitely there. Fortunately, after about 4 or 5 days the lines and bubble outlines faded away. I think they're gone, hopefully for good. Nevertheless, I will not use this product on the guitar again, no matter how long the finish has been allowed to cure.
The quality seems quite good, and it's a great idea. I'm guessing if you have a poly finish, this would be a fine item to use. I wish I felt safe using it on my Les Paul, but, as stated above, I won't make that mistake again.
For me, for the intended purpose of using this to protect my new Les Paul, this product was a huge fail.

great idea, but attacked my SG's finish

By Chip Chance

from Charlotte, NC

Comments about Scratch Pad Velvet Guitar Finish Protector:

What a killer idea. I wish someone had done this years ago. I'd never gotten one of those that attaches with rubberbands or elastic because they look stupid. But this really appealed to me because it had no visible means of support. and easily interchangable from guitar to guitar. So, i got one and applied it to my favorite 61 reissue SG. It has a valour-type back to it that sort of sticks to your clothing so it does not slide around easily next to your clothes. Not ideal to me but worth dealing with just for the protection factor. I pulled it off 2 days later to put on another guitar and noticed it left an outline of itself in the SG's finish. I further realized that it didn't completely lay flat but had some small air bubbles trapped underneath and there are outlines of them in the finish as well. I tried rubbing them out and even attempted some light polish but it had no effect. It's a great idea, reasonably priced and very well made. But the trade off may not be worth it if you are the type to take care in the first place. If the thought of an outline of the pad with the air bubbles outlined as well is less offensive than belt buckle rash, then perhaps this is meant for you. Mind you, the outlines I've described are minimal at best and mainly visible when held up with the light at the proper angle. Not the sort of thing you are likely to notice from 5 feet away. But it should not have effected the finish on my guitar at all. Much less in only 2 days. I don't plan to raise too much hell because the damage is done and this guitar is going to stay with me till I die. So, i don't have to worry about resell value. Your circumstances may be different. You have been informed.

Comments about Scratch Pad Velvet Guitar Finish Protector:

Great invention! I have only one right now, that I've owned for years! Works great! I'll be buying another one in the future!
The gel will get dirty sometimes, and not stick very well, but it's a quick fix! Use isopropyl alcohol and a soft paper towel! Lay on a flat surface, gel side up, pour on a little alcohol and wipe clean with the towel. You can see the dirt on the towel! It is now good as new!
The quickest way to store it is to lay the pad down, gel up on a flat surface and then apply the backing! Very fast!
The one size offered works well on solid body guitars, but I think a "jumbo" size would be nice to have for an acoustic guitar! In spite of that drawback however, my 7 year old Gibson Songwriter Deluxe still looks new on the back! And she's played tons of gigs!
Buy one if you care about your guitar's appearance and resale value!

I already had four of these and they provide excellent protection from belt buckle rash on the back surface of the guitar, so I bought three more for the new guitars I've aquired. Very easy to install and reposition as needed. Nice velevety finish. Once installed does not move.

Love this product but the backing is the exact size of the padding. Re-sticking it on the backing exactly as it came off is hard. I found a larger piece of plastic to store it on and it's great. No buckle marks on the expensive guitar.

My friend pete wears huge belt buckles daily. He decided to pick up my les paul with out asking me and started to play with it. When I came home, I found his belt buckle burried in the scratch pad. I quickly removed the scratch pad to see if their was any damage. I was relieved to see that it was perfect. The scratch pad did its job! Thank you scatch pad!!!

I just got this product and it rocks, I put it on my acoustic and it works wonderful, I can take it off if I want to put it on another guitar. I gave it a 9 on features because it had a backing that your suppose to put it on when not in use, but the backing is the same size very hard to put it back on, otherwise this is the BEST accesory for any guitar.

Bought one of these and it started to lose its ability to stay on just after a month!A friend suggested an AxeGlove and while more expensive, it protects the ENTIRE back and part of the front of my guitar. PLUS it has a secondpart that protects my neck and come iff in 3 seconds when I want to remove it.IMO, the AxeGlove is MUCH MORE superior product.

I've had a scratch pad on the back of my Stratocaster for over 4 years and it still works (and adheres)perfectly despite numerous string changes etc. After all this time the velvet is starting to wear off but it still does the job. If you don't want your nice finish to get scratched by your belt buckle buy one of these. Simple product that just works.

This baby is worth it's weight in gold.I ride a Harley and play guitar enough said. My buckle is a typical Harley buckle and that means it's big. Wearing a big buckle and playing guitar really don't go hand in hand but for a lousy twenty bucks I can do both.I originally bought one to try it out, now I have three, one for each guitar. Like I said, they're worth their weight in gold.

Comments about Scratch Pad Velvet Guitar Finish Protector:

I got my first pad from a friend back in June for my b-day?I?ve bought two since and now I?m playing Santa. All I can say is that the wear marks on the pad is a good indicator of what would have happened to my finish. The product is made extremely well I just wish they made a little bigger size for my acoustic.I've never been able to understand the attitude that by damaging your finish you're giving it character. Some of the older vintage axes show roadworthiness because there was no solution so it was easy to reside to the fact that your guitar would develop some type of "character." My guess is anybody who doesn?t care about there finish never owned a brand spankin? new ax?you wouldn?t key the finish on a brand new car would you?

I bought one of these about 6 months ago. It lasted for about 3 months, then started falling off. My problem may have been that it got dirty because it fell off at a friends house and got dog hair all over it. I blew/brushed it off and it seemed to stick OK on my guitar. About 3 days later it wouldn't stick PERIOD.
