Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
I am not at all as experienced as some of the other reviewers regarding specific vintage sound of "those great old pickups". I actually got the neck Phat to replace an active SD in a Schecter C1FR. I didn't even change the volume pot yet but I'm already in love with the sound and thinking about getting the bridge one too. The output is pretty high, you can practically get any sound you'd like, depending on guitar/gear. It's all true guys, this thing is PHAT!
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
Using this pickup in the neck position of a PRS Mira (24 fret, slim all mahogany construction, similar to a SG) along with a SD Custom Custom in the bridge. Tone is very warm and very fat, fat, fat as advertised. Nice warm clean tones and overdriven and distorted still maintains clarity. Almost like a regular PAF style humbucker but with the added spank and clarity of a single coil. At first too warm and phat but I went down to a .01 tone cap instead of a .022 and that made things a lot better (left volume and tone pots at 500K). Always remember you need to play with the pickup heights and possibly even change your electronic control values to get the best out of any pickup.
For now this pickup is staying and may never be swapped out. Awesome alternative to your standard humbuckers.
P90 style pickup in a humbucker sized form factor. Single conductor (braided shield over the hot wire). Nickel cover.
Solid made in the USA construction.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
Like the previous reviewer I'm getting ready to install my 3rd set of Phat Cats-this time on a tele. My first two went on a Les Paul and a Dot.I've already got humbucker-sized P-90s on the tele (another brand) but they don't come close to what the Phat Cats do.Don't skimp on 'other' brands. What you pay for the Phat Cats is what you get- the best P-90 sound there is, IMO.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
I installed this beauty in the neck position of my Epi Les Paul Classic. The tone is awesome! The output is hot. It's very strong in the midrange and cuts through the mud. The depth of the tone defies description other than to say - Whoa! I could see this pickup being an asset in any position. Dig in!
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
I earn my living playing music. Tele's have been my weapon of choice for years, and they still are, naturally because of the bridge pickup. I never imagined any other pickup than a single coil Tele could produce a good country-rock/blues tone. The Phat Cats do that and more. They can go from sparkling cleans, with meaty bottom end, to excellent crunch and distortion. The neck pickup is bluesy as any Strat or LP humbucker. Both pickups together sound close to a 2nd 0r 4th switch-position Strat. Easy to install, quiet as a mouse with good shielding, and I play through a Blues Deville w/four 10's..a match made in guitar heaven. A full, clear sound, equally distributed across all 6 strings.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
Unbelievable! I just dropped a set of these in a Michael Kelly Deuce and I have a whole new sound. Rich, Warm & PHAT!!! Any Blues Guitarist will love these pickups. Great for Rockabilly and Classic Rock as well. Seymour Duncan, you have outdone yourself again.
Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:
This is the third time I have added a phat cat to and extisiting guitar and the results have been perfect every time. It just brings the guitar to life, it's never muddy and always quite warm. A nice, mostly P90 sound with a hint of humbucker and prefered softened attack when playing finger style. I use it mostly for solo jazz and finger style but it cuts well, yet full in a band situation. I now have the phat cat in two hollow archtops and a semi-hollow. Woody, earthy sound as I'm a sans-fx purist. Buy it. Be happy.
