The end result is it works pretty good. But......It took quite a bit of work to get there: In order to get the action down to where it has to be I had to sand about 1/4" off the bottom of the base and another 3/32s of the bottom of the recessed areas above the pin wheels. Measure carefully to be sure your mandolin has enough clearance. Also, the white string seating area is very narrow, the top and bottom strings just barely fit. The instructions call for center the strings in each allocation but this was impossible on my mandolin
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My issues with this item are spelled out in the quality section of the review. It's almost ok, and maybe I got a bad one, but when the problems stack up on each other it's hard to trust the item.
The bridge is not stiff enough and sags in the middle from normal string tension. With my radiused fingerboard and a bridge that sags in the middle the instrument is barely playable. The un amplified tone of instrument is compromised also. I may try it on a cheapo mando that I bought for the price of the case. Spend more, get more or play into a microphone.

I had got this for christmas and put it on right away, in a matter of 15 minutes it was on and tuned up, to which i immediately plugged it into an amp and went to town, I was amazed at how clear it was, and how it took the exact mandolin sound and amplified it, without changing any tone. All in all, great pickup if your tired of mic'ing your mandolin or just want that extra by having it electric.
Only a five for features because there is no volume or tone controls, which would have provided a higher score.
It is very well made, has not broken on me, and remained in place, all cords have stayed in tact and functioning order as well.
For what you get the price is a little steep , I could see this price of it had volume and tone controls but not as the plain pickup it is.

I was worried about this pickup adversely effecting the action of my instrument. After I installed it I was shocked. Not only did the pickup not mess with the action much at all, it sounded great plugged in.
If you need a pickup that is easy to install your self and sounds great this is the pickup is for you! It took me only about a half an hour to install and I was being very cautious. The bridge needed no real adjustments and the velcro that comes with it is very sticky. The cable that is supplied is nice and long. I really like that fact that it detaches from the pickup so you can store it separately from the instrument or replace it as needed. My guitar pickup cable is attached and that is a pain. I was a sceptic and now I'm a believer. I'm looking into buying a shadow pickup for my 6-string Dean Banjo!

Bought this for my Gibson F9 for gigs (in a country/rock band) and got tired of mic'ing. It was a breeze to install and adjust the bridge height (just a matter of putting on new strings). I like that I did not have to make any holes in the ol'gal to install this. I've been performing with this for at least two gigs a week for the last year and have had no problems whatsoever.
