One item of note: AFAIK, the metronome only does x/4 time signatures (e.g., 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, etc.) and simple straight 8th's or straight 16th's. However, it DOES have a "Shuffle" setting and this proved to be a miracle worker during my last piano lesson.

(Consider: It was proving to be very difficult to explain to a piano student what exactly the standard sheet music marking of "two 8th notes = 1 dotted eighth note + a sixteenth note" means exactly, beyond the simple assertion that this makes it much easier to write and read such tunes. When i pulled out the metronome and set it to beep out a "shuffle beat" and i saw my student's eyes widen with immediate comprehension, i knew that this impulse buy had just paid for itself, so to speak.)

I took off a point or two for it not being the most-intuitive unit out there. Maybe i'm just getting old, but i had to resort to the manual to figure out how to set the metronome.
It has both a tuner AND an audible metronome in one unit, and that was really my sole impulse for buying it.
I wish ALL tuners and/or metronomes came with that standard tripod-accepting screw-hole. This unit also has fold-out braces -- just like a Qwerty keyboard might have -- so that you can stand it upright. The max volume is too quite to hear above a drumset or amplified guitar (without mic'ing the unit and running it through your PA) but who would honestly expect it to be THAT loud, anyway?
I bought this as a Stupid Deal of The Day. I really didn't need yet another tuner, but couldn't resist the deal when I realized I could probably never buy a tuner and metronome both in the same device for even 2x or 3x that cost.

This tuner is not accurate, neither by plugging in an instrument nor by using its built-in microphone.

This is personally tested and verified in several ways.
1. Plugging in a piano/keyboard and test the frequency detection at 438Hz using middle octaves
2. Test the mic using a piano, playing its middle octaves.
3. Using several tuned guitars (both electric and acoustic, essentially tuned stage-ready to gig) and find out that it reads our tuning inaccurately. The guitars are tuned to match using Boss and Korg tuners.

The saving grace of this tuner are as follows:
1. The pitch through the "tone" functionality is accurate. I verified this through a well tuned orchestra-grade grand piano. As such, this is my current way of tuning my stringed instruments (ukuleles & guitars) using this tuner.

I will rave about the tone functionality. It tunes 7 octaves using an electronic pitch. It's a simple single-frequency pitch, and that's enough to get the job done. Still~ 7 octaves!

2. The metronome works. Not like that says much, really.

I acknowledge the Tascam brand's quality. My orchestra friends have some nifty Tascam devices for their recording, and the sound being captured is nothing short of amazing.

However, this product falls short of my expectations as I purchased it.

Great product! It has many features, like the backlight, mic, tuning modes, metronome, etc. that made it very valuable to me. It also has a fine tune feature that allows the user to get an even more accurate reading (great for studio). I like it and bought two of them.

Worthless for tuning acoustec guitars. Will not recognize E 6th string at all. Tuner works OK with electrics. Metronome is very limited. Do not even pay the sale price for this tuner. There are much better out there for the same price.

I have a (cheap) 20 year old tuner that smokes this one.
Gotta see if I kept the box so I can return it.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

The Tascam TG-7 Tuner and Metronome is a versatile piece of equipment that is probably best suited for home or studio use. I don't see it as a stage tuner. I guess this would depend on the tuning preferences of the user. The display is small. It's not a heavy duty stomp box, but rather a precision piece of equipment with some interesting options. Namely, the TG-7 has 12 different tuning modes, including open D and G. The options are easily accessible through a series of buttons on the face of the tuner. The learning curve for use is generally low. The metronome function is useful, but suffers from volume problems with the internal speaker. Can't comment yet on battery longevity, other than to say it seems to be reasonable at this point. All in all, the TG-7 is a versatile piece of equipment. It's accurate and a good songwriting companion.

I'm very pleased with the TG-7.

It's small enough to take everywhere, versatile enough to keep you busy exploring all it's options and cheap enough to make this an excellent value

I would like to see an AC adapter connector in future models.

My main sugesstion to TASCAM is to put this in a peddle ASAP!
I have used TASCAM stuff for so long I can't remember when I started. This little beauty well exceeded my expectations. It has so many great features: mulitple diaplay options including a STROBE, multiple alternate tunings including some neat open E and D options I haven't tried before.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

I love this tuner. It's by far my favorite. Small, but easy to read. Has a good pass through so you can always be in tune. I like that it is batter operated, although changing them can be a pain, ybut it doesn't come up that much. Muliple choice back lighting color is great for when the lighting at a club causes reading issue.

I get them during stupid deal of the day cheap. I then give them to students. It's a great tuner plus metronome which is so critical to creating good rhythm habits in beginners.

I hate stomp box tuners because I believe a good show has no dead time. This allows me to tune on the fly and no one notices. Of course I play bass so I'm always one note at a time.

I can use this tuner on the go or put it in the chain on my rig to tune live on stage, for practice, tune a student (or 4) up for a lesson, and never have to change tuners.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

Last time these were on the cheap I got two. One for my work counter and one for my board. If it's the only one I use I'm ok with it. I mean, it's accurate, but it doesn't show the notes like all my other tuners. I tune flat so let me explain below.

Eb, Ab, Db, Gb , Bb, Eb All my other Tuners

          Eb, G#, C#, F# , Bb, Eb. The TG7

My issue, so my head isn't screwed with is why doesn't the turner read all the notes like this when I tune:
D#, G#, C#, F#, A#, D# if it was done like this I could wrap my head around it quickly. But the other way it causes me to slow my tuning because I'm taking a moment to decipher what it's dong.

I thought the price was right for the Stupid Deal of the Day, but would not pay full price for this unit. It is not easy to use and requires a little thought before being able to use it. Can't be bothered at gigs, but for home it is perfect. The metronome volume is not loud enough to hear when playing. The back light should be brighter.

I don't use the metronome, so can't comment on it. But the tuner is sweet. Built solid, not flimsy. You can set reaction speed and get very quick response. Alternate tuning capability is a plus. No issues with accuracy anywhere on the neck with a properly intonated instrument. And no issues with tuning a bass...once it is switched to bass mode.Instructions are a bit vague, but easy to use once you figure it out.Happy with it and will buy a couple more next time it shows up as a Stupid Deal.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

Definitely NOT worth the regular price. Stupid Deal price was very good. Even with the backlight, the LCD screen is difficult to see, and the beat is hard to determine visually because of the scrolling markers, which aren't really necessary. You can turn them off only by muting the audible click, which isn't very loud even at maximum volume. You can't see the visual beat if you are reading music, like you can with a blicking LED light such as other metronomes have, and the audible click is difficult to hear while you are playing. The tuner seems to work well, but again the LCD screen is hard to read. You need to make sure the tuner is in the right mode, or it will perpetually show a high pitch. For example, it will only tune notes in the bass range if you are in the bass mode. I think that the only realistic use would be for practice, and even then only if you are playing quietly with the device right in front of you. There are a variety of special settings, like variable rhythms (3/4, 6/4, shuffle), and different scales (including user definable). But the single sheet manual is necessary to figure out how to use the device, especially if you want to use any of those special functions.

Ok for basic home use. Screen weak and volume on the metronome is weak too. Surprisingly complicated to use. I bought two because they were on sale for twelve greenbacks. Put one on my bass players amp for him to use, he couldn't figure it out. So, we set it asside. I read the book and can use it now, but tuners must be plug and play for working musicians.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

Works great with my electric and acoustic guitars as well as acoustic ukulele. The volume on the metronome is really too low to be of much use but I didn't buy it for that so no problem for me.

Comments about TASCAM TG-7 Guitar and Bass Tuner/Metronome:

The strobe style tuner is the most accurate way to analyze your tuning because it indicates your pitch via it's rate of movement left or right. When it stops dead, you're dead on pitch. Unfortunately a true professional grade strobe tuner is very expensive.

The TG-7 has a mode that faithfully emulates the actions of a strobe tuner, allowing you to zero in on your exact pitch; not like the little centered arrow on other types of tuners that lack the resolution necessary to see extremely slight differences in pitch.

The metronome feature is also useful for lots of different applications. In addition to effective practicing it has live performance enhancing features as well. Say you're doing an unaccompanied intro to a number that's going to kick off with a per-recorded backing track and you want to have your intro's tempo in synch with that of the track. The silent visual metronome mode can be invaluable for something like this.

I was so impressed with this gadget I just had to order a second.
