If you have low action guitars proceed with caution. As you slide towards the nut the hard plastic underside of this product rubs on your frets especially the first three frets near the nut. You can lift the device up as you slide to the nut but then the plastic bends and the top part of the strings do not get cleaned. You can remedy this by doing another swipe over the top of the strings with only one side of the device...so it becomes a 2 step process. On one of my guitars I always seem to get my high e-string popped out of the nut when I use this product no matter how carefully I proceed. I'm a little concerned about the wear on the nut groove for the high e-string because of this. The main benefit is it is very easy and quick to use which means you'll use it even if you are tired and just want to pack up and go home after a gig. Since I have to really guide the product near the nut I'm considering going back to a cloth which will not wear on the frets like the plastic on this device although I have not done this yet. I guess I'm still undecided or just lazy.

Borrowed one from a fellow musician to try it out. I found that a lot of the complaints about it hitting the frets and such could be avoided by simply loosening the strings about 4 turns. It's relatively simple and provided ample slack to slide the device all the way to the nut. I however have found that simply folding a microfiber cloth over and doubling the thickness and sliding it under the strings does the same thing to clean the bottom of the strings. If you want to really clean the gunk off get a "green scrubby" pad normally used for washing dishes, loosen the strings about 4 turns, place a thin piece of cardboard between the pad and the fretboard and slide it all the way up the fretboard to the nut. If you want you can even slide the cardboard down over the sound hole of an acoustic or over the pups of an electric and clean them all the way to the bridge. Then simply do the same thing to the top of the strings cleaning the entire length of the string. You will notice not only are they cleaner, they are brighter in appearance. Wipe them down on both sides with a microfiber cloth and you are done. If you want to use Finger Ease or some other product to "condition" the strings now is the time. It takes a few extra minutes but it works wonders. Maybe I should glue some green scrubby pads to the inside of a cheap piece of plastic and market it as a new string cleaning marvel. Nope, too lazy. I'll just keep cleaning my strings like I have done for the past 30 years and be happy with the satisfaction that my strings last longer, sound brighter and look better as a result of a little time spent on maintenance. Wiping both sides your strings down after every use while your sweat and gunk is still fresh and somewhat moist will make them last a lot longer. Watch what most steel guitar players do every time they finish playing. That's how I learned the technique. I'll get off my soap box now and let you pickers get back to the reviews.

I expected better

Comments about ToneGear The String Cleaner Cleaning Tool:

I wouldn't recommend this product because of the low quality. My next purchase will be a certain cloth that's used to clean brass instruments. Dan Erlewine recommends that for cleaning strings.
I bought The String Cleaning Tool because a friend recommended it. The first thing that I noticed is that it is made out of plastic. The microfiber cloth on the inside that clamps down on the strings was also cheaper quality than what I expected. After I clamped it down on the strings of my acoustic, I slid it down the neck from the soundhole towards the nut and it worked fine until the 5th fret. At that point, the plastic side started to scrape against my frets. That's the area where the strings need the most cleaning, but this tool couldn't clean very effectively there. A thinner design for this tool would be ideal.
Low quality materials were used to make this tool.

        The String Cleaner

Comments about ToneGear The String Cleaner Cleaning Tool:

I have used one of these on my sitar for some time. This device has a design flaw which has been addressed in a few other reviews: Namely that it can damage some guitars. I've found a perfect workaround. Ready? Here it is: Lift up on the handle instead of pressing down with it. Wasn't that easy? Now, the review. I use this after I use Fast-Fret and it does two great things in this capacity: gets rid of the excess Fast-Fret oil and lets you leave that silly cloth in the container instead of shedding all over your guitar. This microfiber material is great and leaves nothing behind. It also lasts far, far longer than any Fast-Fret or String Ease, although it won't do for you what those do re: making the strings play faster. Recommend.

Comments about ToneGear The String Cleaner Cleaning Tool:

I purchased the string cleaner about a week ago and got it in the mail the other day. I used it on the set of strings that were already on my guitar and immediately noticed a difference. The entire string including underneath where the dirt and grime accumulate the most was whiped clean. Not only were the strings cleaner, but they sounded new again. I am going to use this product for a long time. 5 stars!

I keep one of these in my case and use it just after playing each jam or gig. It has increased the life of the strings more that I would have dreamed, just make sure you use it while the finger oils, etc. are still fresh. Also, keep it fresh by cleaning it per the instructions when you do change strings.

Comments about ToneGear The String Cleaner Cleaning Tool:

Primarily, I'm a bassist, but I also play guitar. Before buying any musical instruments or accessories on line, I often check out the product reviews. After doing a little bit of research, I decided to invest in the Tone Gear The String Cleaning Tool, mainly for my guitars. For the price of this product, I didn't expect an item that would revolutionize the world of guitar players.I did get a cheap gadget that seems to do what it is designed to: extend the life of guitar strings by cleaning them. Those who purchase this handy little gadget would do well by reading the review ("The String Cleaner") that was posted by Anonymous Musician and follow the advice. If Fender Bender (who wrote the review "Wasn't Impressed") would wash his or her hands more often (between every set played at gigs) and keep his guitar out of the reach of those with dirty hands, maybe there would not be any need for frequent changes of strings. So far, this item exceeds my expectations and I'm impressed.

Comments about ToneGear The String Cleaner Cleaning Tool:

Overall, I'd really recommend it, especially if you have a tendency to cover your guitar in what looks like alien biofilm like some people I know.
It cleans the tops of the strings which any cloth can do, but it gets underneath the strings where the gunk has more of a tendency to build up and get on the fretboard. Normally that stuff's a pain to get to.
It's cheaply made, which is no surprise since it's ten bucks. Just be careful with it (make sure the cloth doesn't snag on the strings when inserting it, etc.) and it'll last plenty long.
When I use it every once in a while, the string regain some of their brightness. I'd say that's an indicator that the strings are going to last longer with this.

Worked okay on one of my guitars, but didn't really do much on the other 7. I work constantly and this thing just doesn't really seem to make a dent as far as a good clean up after a set. I'll stick with a rag and a liquid cleaner, or the Wonder Wipes I've just tried.

this string cleaner is good in a pinch but it's very hard to install on my 3 pickup Epiphone Black Beauty. But on My other 2 pickup Guitars its a little easier to install and rib it up and down the strings. don't expect to be able to clean your strings up to the nut I'm able to get to the second fret without breaking strings. I'm very sorry to say I would not recommend this product there are much easier ways to clean your strings

This device replaced my original (same). It works reasonably well - better than others I've tried.
I dampen the pads with Dunlop String Cleaner/Lubricant. This enhances the effect, but be advised, over time, the cleaner will eventually cause one or both of the pads to loosen. Still usable, but pads have to be repositioned frequently. This will probably not occur if this device is used dry as instructed.

well the idea is its a plastic tool on a hindge so u can get full coverdge on your strings. once u get it on ur strings all u can do is pull it towards u and clean the bottom of the strings, if u push down on it ull be hitting the fret board so there for the top goes unclean, now it hasnt fallen appart and ive used it a few times, just imo i think its easy to use a rag of some sort, trust me ur money is better spent on somthing else.

The only reason I wouldn't recommend this, is because the bass version of this is an overall improvement to the design, and can be used on both basses and guitars.

Using the string cleaner is self explanatory: you unclip the tabs and then clip them back once you've aligned the cleaning pads over/under the strings. From there you lift it up as you slide the cleaner from the bridge to the nut, and back. Clean up is easy, all you have to do is unclip the tabs to open the cleaner, rinse the pads in a drop of soap and warm water, rinse with water again, and let it dry overnight.

Fairly simple and easy to use, and handy in prolonging string life, but as others have pointed out, it's easy to mess up your fretboard if you don't lift the cleaner up as you slide it around the fretboard.
