A hip trick now revealed by the master.

The Steve Gadd Brushes are great! The design is one of those ideas that make you wonder, "Why didn't someone think of this sooner?" They give a nice, solid "swish", especially on a newer coated drumhead. The tips of the wires, being angled away from the drumhead, simply don't snag on the coating of the head. And, these brushes just invite you to try new techniques, like applying more pressure to your swish without worrying about the dreaded "snag." Certain special techniques, like laying the open brush on the snare head and rolling it back and forth have a different feel with these brushes. And, a single-stroke roll requires a slightly different approach, due to the fact that there is more actual metal brush area in contact with the head. But these minor adjustmens aren't problems, just new ways of playing! For some inspirational brush playing, you might check out Jeff Hamilton and Steve Smith playing "Salt Peanuts" on YouTube. Just two drummers with brushes and two snare drums. Steve Smith is using Vic Firth's traditional brush (the ones with the purple handle) and Jeff Hamilton is using his Regal Tip signature model. Neither of these have the Gadd bent wires feature, but you'll be amazed at the tasteful brushwork.Anyway, nice comfortable rubber handle, smooth retraction, reliable locking mechanism (full spread or a bit thinner) and that always-reliable Vic Firth quality.Twenty-some dollars isn't cheap, especially these days, but you won't be disappointed. And, unless you play very hard, these brushes are very durable and sturdy.

These brushes are insanely quiet. The wire isn't stiff wire, like ordinary wire brushes, that produces that crisp, clear, but accoustic sounding style. The wies on the brushes are very flimsy, not bad quality, just the preference of whoever buys them I guess. I wanted that great tone that I've been hearing on my favorite artists' records, but found out that, by experience, this wasn't that kind of brush. If you're looking to record an accoustic session, I would not reccomend. Try to look into brushes that are stiffer. I don't know why people have liked these brushes, but as my personal preference and advice to everybody else, go with something else. These are not my cup of tea, and are having to buy other brushes to replace them, even though I don't even think I hve the money now. Good luck with your choice! Hope I've helped :)))

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

An extremely expressive, great sounding brush. Mine is going on 2 years and I have yet to bend or lose a wire. It's sturdy enough to pull rim knocks and rimshots off with and sounds great doing it. You won't get a lot of 'sweep' with it no matter how much you extend the wires, but you will get a unique snappy quality that enables you to swish the wires back and forth more rapidly than any roll - a great fill-in or crescendo building effect. I docked a couple points because of price - perhaps these are why Steve gets to be the highest paid session drummer. Still, they're well worth it. They were my first brushes, and are still my mainstays.

These make you better

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

I am a above average rock drummer, but I have always been an inept brush player. I just never could get the flow or snap that I see others get. UNTIL THESE BRUSHES. I immediately went from inept to "okay". No snagging, more consistent contact with the head, easy to control. The bent edges control the pressure factor for untrained brush players like myself and make it MUCH easier. It really is like cheating. Thanks VF and Gadd. AMAZING product.

Perfect!!!

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

These brushes do what they're supposed to do. Very playable which makes them musical. Well constructed and gig-tough. The 45 degree angle does keep them from snagging on heads. Adjustable width via the push-pull rod works well and stays in place while playing allowing for degree of attack or swirl effect. Just be careful to notice if the angle is up or down before before playing. One of the happier purchases in a long time!!

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

Gonna be honest - I have no prior experience with brushes. I am a newbie to the ways of the brush. That being said, I can say with complete confidence that I love these. The handle is perfect - the exact weight and feel of a stick. It makes playing with them all the more enjoyable, because, for me, it doesn't feel so different from a stick. The sound these things put out, of course, is far different from a stick. Why wouldn't it be? Now, while I haven't really used brushes before, I have heard quite a few, and I must say, these are some of the best sounding ever. A perfect swish, made all the better by my Remo FiberSkyn 3 snare head.If you're thinking about getting these, stop thinking, and just get them. Do it.

Great quality brushes, I know Steve personally from our old drum corps days. We played together for many years. And I know anything with Steves name on it is top quality. I play mostly country - western so I do a lot of brush work. These are with-out a doubt the best brushes I have ever used.

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

Not only can you twirl these brush sticks like any other wooden stick but you can play almost as loud while still being able to put in some brush work patterns and beats. I got these this morning and I am very happy with my purchase. As many you drummers know brushes seem to be lil'borin for you youngin, but trust me once you start bangin away with them you'll be converted into a brush man! lol I loves you should get them too it's fun to experiment and hear what kind of sounds you can get out of your'ol drum kit.

Comments about Vic Firth Steve Gadd Wire Brushes:

If you're used to lightweight wire brushes that don't project at all, you'll be in for a very pleasant surprise with these awesome brushes. I love Mr. Gadd's playing, and using them for the first time at both the morning and evening praise and worship services at our rather small church, I was blown away. They are heavier than I'm used to, so getting my technique just right will take awhile, but it will be worth the challenge. These brushes can be made to sound nearly as loud as a lighter Hot Rod stick if you want, especially on the snare and crash cymbals...I guess it's the very unique and innovative bent angle design at the end, along with the heavier weight of the brushes. They even brought a good tone out of my toms, but I had to lay into them a little more, then lighten up on the following cymbal crash/crashes, because as I said before, they will make my Paiste 17" Signature Full Crash and A Zildjian 16" Thin Crash explode if not careful, not to mention my 14" Wuhan China cymbal. But it was an unexpected pleasure to be able to lay very hard into my 22" A Zildjian Ping Ride with these babies, and not have them cause the cymbal to start having uncontrollable overtone buildup, nor sound too loud. All in all, you deserve to have these brushes in your arsenal of striking implements, especially if you want brushes that can almost match the lighter Hot Rod type sticks when needed, as well as have the typical low volume brush playing we're all used to...but these babies will make you re-think your brush playing whether you want to or not, because they just beg you to try different strokes and ideas with them that a traditional set of brushes never would. Vic Firth and Mr. Gadd have almost converted this Regal Tip man, but not quite!! ;)

I play in an Alt-Bluegrass band and am on the road a lot.....I decided a few years ago I started using a snare drum with brushes to keep things simple and have and "Old School" feel.....I have tried different brushes and these have been the best so far!....The last pair I owned lasted 2 years (actually they are still my back ups but have lost a lot of the wires).....I tried a couple other brands but they didn't hold up over the long haul (one pair lasted ONE GIG before the wood handles cracked).....I bought this new pair and have been glad about the response, clarity and durability of the product....I HIGHLY recommend these!
