Good foot controller

By Kou Vang

from Midwest

Comments about Yamaha MFC10 MIDI Footcontroller:

Overall, I like the foot controller, and would recommend it to others. Yamaha has been in the music industry a LONG time, and understands the MIDI world - not just the MIDI guitarists world.
Just to clarify the features and capabilities for those looking to purchase this MIDI foot controller...

There are three modes of operation: Normal Non-Function, Normal Function, and MIX.

Normal Non-Function mode (Program Change mode):128 presetsEach preset can transmit a Program Change message (1-128) to a specified MIDI Channel (1-16) with a Bank Select range of 0-127. Only one Program Change message is allowed per preset in this mode. The onboard expression pedal can be configured to transmit either Control Change, After Touch, or Pitch Bend messages to a specified MIDI channel (1-16) with configurable minimum and maximum values. Up to four additional expression pedals can be plugged in and configured the same.
Normal Function mode 100 presetsEach preset can be programmed to transmit the following MIDI messages - Note On/Off, Control Change, Program Change, Song Select, Continue, Stop, Section Control, or Tempo Control. Presets 0 through 49 can simultaneously transmit up to 4 of the same MIDI messages of the following - Note On/Off, Control Change, and Program ChangeThe expression pedal works the same as described in Non-Function mode.Switching from non-function to function mode can be done easily by pressing the Function footswitch.
MIX mode:You must switch the dip-switch on the rear panel from the Normal position to MIX, which means you cannot do this on the fly.25 presets for Program Change messages (Footswitches 1-5 and using x10 - bottom row). Functionality is the same as in Non-Function mode.5 presets for Function Mode MIDI messages (Footswitches 6-0 - top row). Functionality is the same as in Function Mode.Selecting the Function footswitch in this mode will switch you to Normal Function Mode - giving you access to the 100 presets in that mode. The Expression pedal works the same as described in Normal Non-Functional Mode.
The MFC10 has a MIDI In and Out connection, and has a WX jack for plugging in a Yamaha WX7/11 Wind MIDI controller.

The housing is made of a very rugged plastic, and I would deem it road worthy. Bright green LEDs light up the footswitch numbers, and a large red illuminated 3 digit 7 segment LED display shows what preset you have selected.

It doesn't use the industry standard Carling switches, so hopefully it will last from that standpoint. I haven't had a chance to open it up and check it out yet, but my assumption would be some type of circuit board mounted tactile switch," since there is no ""click"" or mechanical engagement when pressing the footswitches. But price point for this product is on par with the technology and materials used.

Power input is 12 VDC @ 1 Amp. It does use a wall wart power supply", but it's slim and protrudes to the side of an outlet.
I haven't had it that long, but so far so good. It feels pretty rugged. We'll see how long the switches last.
I do find this foot controller a bit expensive, especially in comparison to the Behringer FCB1010 - they each have some trade offs in functionality, but the MFC10 does have some MIDI functions that the FCB1010 doesn't have at all. It also has proprietary Yamaha XG MIDI functionality, so if you are a Yamaha guru, this would probably be a better foot controller for you. Also being able to add four additional expression pedals makes it pretty versatile.

You could spend $1000 and get a foot controller with metal housing enclosure, Carling switches, and more flexible MIDI functionality, but for what you get - this foot controller is a good buy.

Superior MIDI controller

Comments about Yamaha MFC10 MIDI Footcontroller:

I use this controller for a Yamaha combo amp and it gets the job done very well. The expression pedal on this is the best I have ever used; having a basically perfect range from mute to full volume. Perfect for importing midi effects and so much more. I'm just scratching the surface with this one and still having a blast!
