I was looking for a small amp that would boost my acoustic bass enough to play with unamped guitars, and by most of the reviews this seemed like a good one to get. I was offered a discount coupon through MF so I sprung for it.

First time I used it, it was immediately apparent that something was rattling and/or vibrating inside the amp. I also found out that you can't really turn up the volume much more than 3 before it starts to distort, and the rattling becomes obscene.

After researching more, I saw where many others had the same problem, so I took the thing apart and tightened up everything I could get a screwdriver on. It definelty helped the rattling/buzzing noise quite a bit.

With the volume turned down low, it has a fairly good sound, until you hit a certain note that the speaker doesn't like - then it just sounds like a buzzing muffed tone - like when I was in my high-school garage band playing through blown speakers.

I wanted to send it back, but the original packing materials got thrown out, and MF would charge me 25% for that....and with the cost of return postage...I guess I just keep it and eat it. Maybe it will be OK using the line-out into a mixer for recording or something?

Comments about Ampeg BA-108 25W 1x8 Bass Combo Amp:

When I first plugged this in I was impressed with the tone from my precision bass. The AUX in with independent volume controls is a great feature as is the effects loop.

Unfortunately the amp can't handle both AUX in and LOOP to be populated at the same time. It switches one of them off.

I swapped the stock drivers with an eminence alpha 8a. Same sound but allows more crankage which probably really isn't necessary.

Comments about Ampeg BA-108 25W 1x8 Bass Combo Amp:

Back in the day, Ampeg was THE bass amp. This combo is a mini reminder of the quality Ampeg was popular for. If you want a small, fairly capable PRACTICE amp, this is a good one. Don't think you would be able to play Filmore East with it but for connecting your ipod, PC, etc. and learning new numbers, it works quite well. With the headphone jack it give me the ability to practice at 1:00 a.m. without disturbing others. I did notice on the version 2 models the ipod jack is a mini plug which, these days, makes a lot of sense. I did not experience any rattles or other signs of faulty construction. It seems pretty solid when I pick it up and the knobs and controls operate smoothly. This was a restock and for just a litle more than a VOX Bass, I got a (small but) full functioning amp. I may get a 2-10 or 1-15 version 2 model later on but wanted to read some reviews on them before taking that plunge. Perhaps those units will be more suited to a live performance environment. This unit does not have the Scrambler feature which is another reason the version 2 models interest me.

Comments about Ampeg BA-108 25W 1x8 Bass Combo Amp:

This is a 25 watt bass amplifier, and it sounds like a real bass amp, as long as you don't try to over do it. If you need more power, then get a larger amp. This is my fourth Ampeg, and will be used when my PB110 with PB250 head is too much. I like that this is a combo also, my other combo is the BA600/1-15, and can be overkill. This little amp sounds like an Ampeg, and if something happened to this, I would buy another. Great for practices, studio, and small gigs that don't have screaming guitars.

This may be a small bass amp on the outside, but it is packed full of power along with that great Ampeg sound. I was surprised on how loud this amp gets and the quality it brings. Great built-in features with a line out and my favorite, the -15db input. Gives you the flexibility on loudness dependent on the venue. Great price too! Get yours today!
