This amp is perfect for what I do. I'm in a four-piece folk-rock band (we don't mike instruments or drums), and I'll play the odd theater gig or back up an acoustic guitarist from time to time.

The combination of my bass and the way I play makes 12" speakers work better for me. For years I used a 1967 Ampeg SB-12. I loved the sound, but SB-12s are a bit on the heavy side. The BA112 gets me "That Sound", but weighs 20 pounds less!

The kickback feature is very nice! At a low volume gig in a small room or theater pit, leave it upright and you get a big, round sound due to acoustic coupling with the floor. At higher volumes in bigger rooms, tilt it back and bump the lows up a little and you're good to go.
The best feature is the Ampeg sound, but I also REALLY like the Style Selector switch! Five settings - #1 sounds like it's voiced for a standup bass, #2 and #3 are "old-school" Ampeg voicings, and #4 and #5 are brighter for folks who "slap and tap". Set the tone controls at 12 o'clock and click through the styles. Once you hit the one you like, you'll barely need to tweak from there. A very well-designed, musically useful feature!

The limiter is fabulous, too. It kicks in gradually as you turn up the volume - past about 7 on the volume, the amp doesn't get much louder, but it gets deeper and more compressed - which is exactly what I need.
It looks very well made to me.
A really good deal from Musician's Friend - this amp is worth twice what I paid for it.

If it weren't for the great sound, I'd just get rid of it. I play mostly guitar, but occasionally need a bass either for myself or others. I play jazz and in musicals mostly. This amp has a great sound to it, but it is extremely soft in any room larger than a bedroom. If you need a practice amp, it is good. But I could not recommend it as a gigging amp.

Very versatile amp

By Chadly.sings

from Proneville OR

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I have had this amp for about 10 years and it continues to just be great. I have used this as a portable PA in a pinch, as a single instrument amp for electric drums, bass, guitar, (both acoustic and electric), Keyboard/electric piano, mandolin, vocals, djembe, and even some combinations of the above running through a small Peavey mixer. It is defiantly best suited for personal monitoring needs if you are playing with a full band, unless you are in a smaller room (80 people or less) in which case it can fill a room pretty well. If you have need to fill a larger room this guy have a couple big brothers that all do just great!the kick back feature is great if you are sitting or if you are playing at a higher volume with it further away from you. Otherwise it kinda hits you in the legs, because it is pretty directional unless you are playing bass. it seems to be more forgiving directional-wise with bass.I have yet to really find good use for the 5 position "style" switch. I wish there were a bypass it without digging in and rewiring, (which I have no desire ever to do LOL). Each setting sort of has a pre-eq that shapes the sound and then you use the 3 band eq to shape it more to your likes. the one I like the best is setting one, because it sounds the most "flat" to me.One thing I wish it had that it does not, is a balanced xlr out. the 1/4 inch line out is quality as far as 1/4 inch line outs go... but it always sends extra hiss and it seems I have to eq more bass heavy for it to sound "right" going through any other system or speaker cabinet. Easy to adjust most of the time, but still something that I have had to be conscious of when playing through a sound system. The only difference I can see since I bought mine, is that my handle is on top and the pics on here show that it is on the side (What the heck!?)I am pretty sure they were not in their right mind when deciding to put the handle there. This thing has been a gem, and shows no sign of getting weaker or tired and is really tough. it's been all over the North West and I imagine it will keep on going for many years to come. Ampeg truly delivers consistency, and this amp is no exception.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

This is a great practice amp and not a bad thing to have for casual jams that don't require volume. So far, I haven't had the issues that previous reviewers have mentioned. I purchased this amp because I wanted something small that I could take outside and have a little fun. I own other larger more powerful amps, but this is perfect for what I intended. I love the Style Knob, it does a fairly good job of shaping your tone. My favorite setting is Style #1 and #2, really dig the fat tone on that. However, it can vary in volume output. The input jack for active Basses is really not necessary and actually lowers the overall volume. When you play this, you definitely will know that you're playing through an Ampeg. I have looped in my effect pedals into the amp and didn't experience any conflict between them as can happen sometimes. I gave this a four stars because for 50 watts of power, it should be a little louder for the price you are paying. One thing I believe can improve this amp to justify its price is adding compression and a mid-scoop cut for slap. But overall, this is a great amp, especially for begginers, people on a budget or just need something for the novelty of it.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I just bought this amp about a month ago and was very pleased with it right out of the box. I don't quite understand all the hoopala about how "it isn't loud enough" "It's too small" etc because I am playing with a guitar player, a drummer AND a vocalist (w/PA) and was asked to "TURN DOWN A BIT" yes turn DOWN. I play with some very good players (20+ years of exp) and I don't understand why folks think "Man if ain't loud it ain't happenin". This amp will do whatever you need it to do unless you play music at volume "11". I've used it for gigs. Small venues of course but those are the ones that we keep getting, Oh! they say because when we play they can enjoy the music AND talk to one another without screamming. Great amp I would ask anyone to try one.

Not awful

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

Had this amp for 3 years. I use to practice at home and used to record via mic. Sounds ok, but it clips easy. I have a Fender Precision Special that rox. About a year after buying this ampeg, it would short out when I would get up past the 12th fret. I push the knobs back down and it would play fine. The knobs are not loose, so it has to be internal. Would not trust it in any live scenario.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

Ive now owned this amp for a year and may i say she goes beyond the call. I bought it at a local music shop after returning a ibanez amp that was not up to pare. What a great amp. looks great sounds better then any 115 combo and has features that really can shape a new bass players ear. It has a lot of kick but there's no way u could gig with it just not enough watts and the line out is kinda lame. no xlr just 1/4. but not to be hating on her. Paul McCartney started on a vox rig that was only 10 more watts then this. and look what happened to his career

A Strange Amp

By Anchoret-brYPA

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

This is a really odd amp -- it's wildly overpriced compared to the BA-115 which has twice the watts, more features and a 15" speaker. As a consequence, you almost never see the BA-112, which is a shame as it's a truly great small practice amp -- my personal favorite. I got one at extreme discount in a sale a while back and absolutely love it. No noise, incredible punch, no nonsense and hugely improved build quality since Ampeg moved production away from Crate/SLM.No, it's not a gigging amp. It's not supposed to be, and it won't even cut it in a loud rehearsal. As a personal practice or studio amp, however, it's near perfect.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I've been thinking about getting one of these and tried one out. I used a Schecter Stiletto Custom-5. It's a really nice amp. I didn't even turn it up past 1 and it filled the store. I dialed it for all sorts of tones. The 5 position voice knob is really cool too. I found a great funk slap tone and a great heavy metal tone. The tilt back is just a plus. And of coarse the price is low.

Good amp for small gigs

By Wittlewog

from Boston,MA

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

This amp offers great Ampeg tone on a budget, with clear highs and deep lows, it sounds great! The style selector is good if you want a difference in tones. You can get a good sound out of 1, and with a little more distortion, you can get a Billy Sheehan like tone. Enough power for a practice amp and small gigs. If you are gigging, however, plug into the 0 dB input for more power.

Great tone in a small package

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I have owned an Ampeg SVT 3 & 4-10 HLF for about 10 years now. I gig with this equipment a couple times a month. I purchased the BA112 for practice at home and was surprised with the warmth, clarity, and punch that this combo had. There are higher powered combo amps in the same price range...but if you want great tone, purchase an Ampeg.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I got this as an extra little bass combo to supplement my guitar amps. I play guitar through a mesa 55 combo amp and am using this for adding another dimension to my sound and thicken up my sound with an amp splitter. So far I am very pleased with this amp. It sounds good with a guitar plugged in it and packs a decent punch for jam sessions. It hasn't had any problems yet (have had it for two weeks) and I do like the light weight and added tone. Only downside is that once you go passed about 5 on the volume, it doesn't get much louder, it stays about the same. It's not a big deal as it does make my guitar tone better but I wish it did get a little louder for practice and small gigs. I would still use this for small or large gigs and it would probably be sufficient for a small bar sized gig. However, medium to large gigs this amp would definitely needed to be miced to get any added benefit from it. Overall I like the tones and sounds I get with this using a regular guitar along with a guitar amp and my friends did notice that the bottom end was a lot more punchier and boomy. Also will probably sound really good for recordings, haven't tried it yet but I am sure it will sound good. I like it. Sounds really good with a fuzz pedal too.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

This is just a nice small size amp suitable for small gigs, practice, giving lessons, some studio work, or maybe even large gigs if you mic it thrrough house sound. Would be nice if it had a balanced pre/post equ out and built in tuner. Also, very easy to carry around and you don't need a truck to haul it. Especially for your home rig, this is as good as you will ever need.

For the money its hard to find a better rig. I have an svt3 with a 8/10 for the bigger venues but if you've ever move that sized rig before you know you have to be a "MAN" to move it. This rig when lined out has plenty of power for those smaller rooms. Plus you don't have to break your back at the end of the night to move it.

Comments about Ampeg BA112 50W Single 12 Bass Combo:

I bought this to have as a practice Amp and for those times I don't want to drag a stack around. The 50 watts is not enough to play with a drummer. This thing is perfect for practice along with guitars or for small coffee house type gigs. I wish it had a D/I out instead of a 1/4 inch out, but I can make do..The weight is nice and portable. Fits in the trunk.Tone is very nice. The 5 wat presets are great, less fiddling to find a tone you like for a certain tune. It can handle an active 5- I play my MM through it and it can bottom out on the low B at full volume but only if you push it.Hey- A low price for an Ampeg- Whats not to like?

Very nice amp with plenty of power and projection. The tilt back is great for a monitor. The tone controls offer a great range of flexibility and the tone is just plain warm and smooth. The only problem, and it's a big one, is the annoying hiss from the tweeter. In a quite room or house you're going to hear it and it will drive you crazy. This one thing is probably going to have me taking this one back. Very disappointing to in what would have been a perfect 10.

The 5 style selector switch offers a wide range of sounds and I love the tilt-back feature. Truly worth the money. A beautiful looking and sounding combo.
