I initially got the Ampeg BA115HP, the solid-state version of the Ampeg BA115HPT. Though the BA115HP had nice tone and somewhat passable volume for a solid-state amp, the gain control didn't cause the kind of break-up or head-room I wanted. I also started to notice that the BA115HP didn't have enough volume to practice with my band. So I decided to up-grade to the BA115HPT (the same amp with a tube pre-amp). Bottom-line, if you can spend the extra money-- The BA115HPT definitely has more volume, superior tone, and head-room compared it's solid-state brother. The tube pre-amp makes a lot of difference, I had a big grin on my face when I boosted the gain to about 7 and up. The pre-amp pushes the amp like it should and gives that lovely Ampeg tone. I added a SansAmp Bass Driver DI for over-drive and more tone options. This is a combo I highly recommend: if you use the Ampeg SVT setting on the SansAmp and boost the drive, you start to approach a low budget SVT sound. This a pretty affordable option and workable, since most of us can't crank a SVT or similiar amp in an apartment or residential area, right? The BA115HPT reacts well to the SansAmp as stomp-box and breaks up well. Keep in mind I love high-gain, overdrive, and distortion on the bass. The other good thing about the BA115HPT is that it really has the sweet Ampeg tone that many of us love some much. I have a 1970's SVT with the standard 8 x 10 cab, so I know this tone well. The BA115HPT functions well as a portable practice amp. Admittedly, I haven't had the opportunity to really crank this amp, since my band is building a new practice room right now and I plan to use my full SVT set up as a gig amp.I play a Fender American Jazz Bass and Fender US Vintage 62 Jazz Bass, which both sound great through this amp. I give 4's as ratings, because I don't give a 5 lightly, but this amp is worth it and performs great for the price range and as portable amp.

This is a great combo amp, great tone and features, but it is certainly not enough for the stage or even the slightly loud practice space. It just doesn't hold it's own; not nearly enough prescence even with a 50 watt guitar tube amp turned up halfway, and with even moderately loud drumming. As advertised, it's more for the bedroom than the stage.

Its all about money

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

Positive: TONE, TONE, TONE, TONE! A huge variety of tones are offered from the tubes loaded into the ba115hpt. The 15" speaker rly brings out the warmth of the tubes. I find huge, bittersweet, dark and atmospheric tone from this baby. But great slapping and general rock tones come with ease too. The volume and master controls are the deciding factor to how vintage your sound will be. The horn control helps control how soft or harsh you want your sound to be. And the on-board tuner and mute switch save lots of time and prevent annoying others.Negative: Volume. The amp gets plenty practice loud, but not rly gigging loud. Its uasable for smaller gigs, but def not anything more than a large coffe shop. Comfortably porting this amp is a slight problem; its rather heavy and slightly off-balance. Though my remedy to this is placing the heavy side against my chest and using the handles on the side.I bought this amp for $800. A few weeks later, $300 dollars came off the standard price tag. Worth my money, but for the sale prices a great steal. I would highly recomend this amp for recording.

Good for a year...

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

Positives: Great tone with the tubes, great features (headphones out, cd in jack, tuner), portable, removable casters are great, good looking, easy to repair, ease of dialing in the sound you want.Negatives: knobs break off because they are exposed and if you plan on moving it around to gigs, this may be an issue when it gets tossed around with other equipment. Depending on the size of your band/venue, it can be hard to crank the volume, after about a dozen gigs with the volume around 8 it definitly starts to show its age, meaning lots of buzzing that I can't seem to clear up, the earlier review about the cell phone interference is completly correct (it goes crazy with buzzing in the vicinity of cell phones), not easy to "upgrade". If you're looking for a studio amp, or something to practice with, this is your deal...but if you're seriously looking to gig, go with a separate head and cab, you it will be easier and cheaper in the long run to upgrade.

Good amp

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

I think that it is important to remember to use your equipment for what it is intended for. With that said, this is a great little combo amp! It is not a 600 watt stack... It is not necessarily intended to be a standalone unit for giggins. Don't get me wrong: 220 watts is plenty of power for a small/medium sized gig. However, if you crank the gain and the volume to 11 in order to be heard over the guitars, you will blow this amp, just like any other amp. There's an XLR out, so you can either run through the house PA or have your guitar players turn down. :)As far as this amp goes, you get decent power and great tone. It's Ampeg, so you get Ampeg quality. For me, I've had good experiences with Ampeg amps. I just ordered this one from another online vender's B-stock, and it is everything that I could expect from an inexpensive combo. Good tone, good volume.

Easy to carry ..it 's the best

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

I play with Warwick corvette standard 5 strings. The amp has very good tube sound, good punch good bright sound, but it has a buzzing sound came with the punch, the buzzig come from down to the left of the amp, every time you make a punch the buzzing come out too.. it is not a big deal if you play in band nobody hear it even youself. I try to play in concert for a night club 300 people size with out PA system this amp can handle it Vol 6 master 7(if you know how to control sound for live band), but my sound eng put it to PA a litte bit just in case. I don't use input -15db because it drop too much so i put it to 0db even my bass is Active, (Volune 10 master 10 Amp still alive Good speaker with musicman bass) ...Overall this amp is very good sound for combo amp, easy to carry

RF Interference

By TubeAmpLover

from Saraland, AL

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

Just got this amp home and decided to plug in in downstairs to make sure it worked before lugging it upstairs. Sounded great except for annoying intermittent interference from somewhere. That somewhere turned out to be the cell phone in my pocket. The cell phone must to some sort of self test or look for a signal periodically, 'cause without warning the noise starts, and it is NOT subliminal. Then I pulled out the cell phone and made a call: that really sent the amp into an interference frenzy. If you plan to use this amp in public, keep cell phones away from it. Better yet, take your cell phone to the dealer and make sure this isn't a problem with the amp you are going to purchase.

Annoying Buzz

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

Very nice sounding amp but has a annoying buzzing sound everytime you play a low D. Have seen others with same problem. I had it in the shop twice and they tightened everything down but to no avail. I think this is a design flaw and I am getting rid of this amp.

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

this amp is great, may not have all the bells and whistles as other combos but definately can do the same and beyond what they can do.features i like is the L-pad adjustible horn level. i like the mute switch (super convient) & the tuner (dont even take my hand held one around any more!) You can get a variety of tones and if you dial in right you don't have to blast the volume to 9 or 10 to be heard. and i know-i play over keyboard, leslie organ, and drums @ church! plus playn 4 state women's choir, my local choir, district youth choir, and state purity i need something loud and durable. So, yea this is l-o-u-d... Good transportation system with the wheels(again super convinient) and the handles on side and traditional handl on top. i would recommend this 4 studio use, practice, and at any church service. Plus ampeg is a highly trusted amplifier brand and delivers great tone. -God bless and i'm out

bass amp extraordinaire

Comments about Ampeg BA115HPT 1X15" 220 Watt Bass Combo Amp:

I've owned this amp for a few weeks now, and I find it is simply awesome in every way, except that it has a plastic grille in front of the speaker that offers little protection. The sound is great, the tuner works well, other instruments can sound better on this amp with the selector provided.
