PF-115HE Bass Speaker Cab
Drawing from the classic design of Ampeg's legendary Portaflex cabinets, the PF-115HE bass speaker cabinet combines vintage styling with the performance of a modern 450W cab.

The PF-115HE's 15" Eminence driver pushes out true Ampeg tone along with a 1" high-frequency driver with a level control for dialing in the perfect amount of highs.

PF-500 Portaflex
Ampeg's Portaflex PF-500 bass head delivers a staggering 500W of power in an ultra-compact design providing pure Ampeg tone in an extremely portable package. Precise tone controls and gig-friendly input/output options provide ultimate flexibility. Pair it with Ampeg's PF Series flip-top cabinets for the vintage styling and portability of the iconic Portaflex originals.

The tone stack on the PF-500 provides an extensive array of tone controls for shaping your sound. Bass, mid, and treble controls come standard with a 5-position mid switch for finding the perfect midrange level for your sound. Ultra Hi/Lo boosts add even more on-the-fly options, and an onboard compressor keeps your levels in check and your tone punchy and tight.

At the gig or in the studio, the PF-500 is ready for action with a balanced direct out with pre/post-EQ selector, -40dB pad, and ground lift. An effects loop with dedicated mix control is footswitchable with the optional Ampeg AFP2 2-button switch.

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

The moment I plugged my '76 Fender P-Bass into the PF-500, the cooling fan wouldn't start, the fault light turned on, and no sound came out.
Seller sent me 2 replacements, Ampeg sent me another, all with the same problem.
Great service from seller and Ampeg, they were very helpful, but I think the PF-500 has a very serious design flaw.

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

I have been playing professionally for 35 yrs and I have used a variety of bass rigs over the years. I found myself scaling down a few years ago and used a monitor mix as my stage amp for many years. However, the band I have been playing in for the last 6 yrs has some old school (loud) musicians that crank it pretty high. The combo I was using (popular bass combo rig) gave out on me, not enough power. (220 watts) I spoke to some other bass players and read a lot of reviews. Since I couldn't get away from my small town (no music store) to try an amp out live (which I prefer before I buy) I ordered the PF 350 with 115 stack. When I recieved rig and tried it out I really liked the numerous different sounds I could dial in. However, that night at an outdoor gig, this amp shut down on me 3 different times before I dialed the volume down. I couldn't hear myself the rest of the night, had to be put through monitor mix which defeats the purpose of a bass amp. Next day I called Ampeg and was told to get the PF500. Played with it last weekend and I do believe I have found my rig. Still not real happy with Low b sound but maybe that can be tweaked. Seems weak on that Low B. But, I have some power now and no crapping out at last gig. Hope it holds up!

        Update to previous review

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

I wanted to give everyone reading this review some better in site to this new amp now that i've owned it for almost a year now, and have seen many a gig with it.
First off this is a great sounding versatile amp, built well and great vintage looks, i have a picture below in another review, so you can see I have booth cabs the 115 and 210 so i'm running a full 500 watts.

That being said after doing a few shows with it i noticed it does not project the sound forward,
aat first i thought it was the room then I thought it was outdoors and being 80% of the time I am going through the PA system it was never a real problem, if need be i was put in the monitors.

this rig does not push/project the sound pass 10' from the front of the speakers, so if you are further away or off center of the amp you do not hear it.

today frustrated at an outdoor gig, i opened up the cabs to look inside and realize there are no port holes in these cabs!! all that beautiful Bass Sound and Air is trapped back there and has no way out , i'm no expert but 99% of all bass amps have ports holes or scoop bottoms, so now i need to find a fix or get a regular 4-10 cab and give up that beautiful vintage look.

maybe this was geared more towardes a studio amp.

        A Winner

        By Toney Fender

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

Very impressed so far. I feel like I finally have an amp that I can use with any instrument or in any venue. At this point, my only dilemma is whether or not to get the second cab. I certainly haven't needed it, but it would look cool.......
I play both a Fender Jazz and an electric upright (NS Design NXT). I wanted an amp that would work with both. This amp is feature rich and gives you more than enough controls to dial in the sound you are looking for. What was really surprising is that I had been using a Fishman Pro-EQ preamp with my NXT, but I actually like the sound better without it using this rig.

One important thing to note is that I really like the Ampeg sound and this amp definitely has "that" sound. If you prefer a totally clean sound, this may not be the amp for you. However, I feel confident that for most people there are more than enough controls to dial in something you will really like. Again, if you are an Ampeg fan like me, then you will love this setup. If not, you would probably be better off giving it a test drive first.

I've only played a couple of gigs so far (both with the NXT) and the results have been very positive. One event was an outdoor amphitheater event with the community wind ensemble (about 65 musicians) and I was NOT mixed into the house. I had the gain at 1 o'clock and the volume at 12 and I was told it sounded great and was very well balanced. The other was at church where I am XLR-ed into the house (post EQ). I have to say it sounded flat out awesome - deep, full, rich sound that was not muddy (in fact it was very articulate). I normally use a Lowdown 110 (which I like a lot) in that setting, but the Portaflex rig sounded SO much better. I also play in a jazz combo, but I am supremely confident at this point that my new rig will shine in that venue as well.

Overall, I feel like I have finally found the pro rig that I've been wanting that has enough versatility to meet all of my bass needs. Oh, and the portability is awesome. I REALLY like the flip top. I followed Dino's instructions on You-Tube for mounting - really easy. All you need is a phillips screwdriver.
The cabinet construction is very solid. The tolex is really thick and looks like it will wear well. I also have a Micro-VR setup and the tolex on the portaflex is looks MUCH more durable. Like others, my only real gripe is the casters. Seriously, they should be twice the size, especially if you're going to stack another cab on top. I haven't even used mine because they look so ridiculously small. I'm going to see if I can find something better at the hardware store.
Right now I think it's the best bang for the buck, particularly if you are an Ampeg fan like me.

        This is a Winner

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

I would Highly recomend this amp to any looking for a cool looking vintage amp with that great ampeg sound. I purchased both the 1-15 and the 2-10 cab for a thunderous 500watts of ampeg power, it sounds phenomenal!
thinking of doubling the stack I love it so much.

Beware my only complaint is the casters SUCK they fell off after about 5 uses and I baby the crap out of this rig because i love it so much.
This is a great sounding Amp, it don't get any better than this for the money. but the wheels are not for using outdoors

        New Ampeg Combos

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

Nice cab and head but the casters suck!
The cab sounds great but the casters fell off after a few uses. They were installed with tiny screws and immediately pulled off! I reinstalled them with heavier bolts and now they're fine. You would think that heavy caster mounts would be a no brainer but I guess some engineers have no brains.

        Updated review

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

I got this new Ampeg about a month ago and all is well except having used it on 4 gigs I have to warn you. The casters on this suck big time. I am very careful with my equipment but after a little rolling on concrete to get into the gigs 2 casters pulled away from the cabinet. The amp and cab sound great but don't use the casters!

Ampeg got it right this time

Comments about Ampeg PF-500 Portaflex and PF-115HE Stack:

I have been very critical of Ampeg's BA series combos because of their poor quality since they started Chinese production. I do have to admit I am impressed with the PF-500 Portaflex amp and PF-115HE cab. Seems well built and the sound is awesome...very warm for a non-tube amp. I'll put this to the real test and report back in a few months to see if they hold up but so far I'm very happy and want to congratulate Ampeg on getting rid of the BA series and get back to the basics.
