I play in a classic rock cover band and I picked this amp up sight unheard. But I'm blown away with the power for a solid state amp. The EQ helps with a fat sound if its all at level, or if you make a frown face with the dials, you get a crunch sound without a pedal. Some users say the power isn't enough, but you have to remember it's a 4 Ohm amp. If you only connect 1 cab, it's gotta be a 4 Ohm cab to get all 450 watts working. If you have an 8 Ohm cab, you're only getting half the power. I run a 4x10 and a single 15 cab and there's more power than you'll need. The cabs have to be 8 Ohm cabs to equal the 4 Ohm limit and you get all 450 watts working for you. No need to patch into the house sound board. You'll be rattling the glasses off the bar shelf at 5 on the volumn dial. And for the price, you get the power with real tube sound.

I purchased an svt 450 about two years ago after joining a band where I needed a bit more volume than the 200 watt 1x15 fender I had. I paired it with the 410 half stack, and I was completely shocked that the 400 watt head had less power or drive than the fender. After using it for two years, I've decided to go back to my old fender because it's lighter and it sounds better, and ahem, is LOUDER. In any case, this doesn't even begin to emulate one of the classic ampeg tube amps, so if you're looking for that sound, save your money and go for the classic! Oh, a big plus, however, is that the chassis on this thing is solid. I threw it against a brick wall twice last week and it never broke, so if you're looking for a head to throw against the wall, this is the one for you!

awesome ampeg svt 450h

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

like i said i also play guitar on it i use a bc rich exotic wood pro and a boss metalzone and it nails every tone you want in the death metal music genre
for that cristal clean sound i just use an 80's bass collection bass
i'm both a bassplayer and guitarist so i use this amp for both and what can i say ?
I'm a death metal musician so i like hight gain on guitar and cristal clean on bass
never had a problem with it or anything
it's not very expensief for the price i think you can have one of your own

Its...ok...

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

I have had this amp for 6 years now so I have had a couple of minutes to turn the knobs and listen to how it sounds. First thing first, it stopped working for me after 1 year of using it (gigging, rehearsals, and recording). It was a effects loop problem that prevented the input signal from going out the external speaker output, also the XLR line out could not directly hold a cable. Ampeg has incredible customer support. I just sent them my receipt, warranty card, and description of the problem. Presto, in 2 weeks I was back on stage. Second, I do not believe that this amp is 450w as advertised, it has a very weak signal output in my opinion. If you?re playing a medium size club/bar you will need to mic or DI. Third, it does not sound like a SVT at all! MOSFET? I don?t think so. It is basically the B2RE in a black box (the worst Ampeg out there bar-none, went through 2 in 1 week). My suggestion, get a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI and hook it up to this baby. It will LOOK and SOUND like a SVT-CL and/or SVT-VR. This unit has basic controls and a EQ which can come in handy. I run this head though the Ampeg SVT-410HLF cab, Fender Mexican P-bass (active EMG pick-ups), and with the Tech 21 DI used any my pre-amp it ROCKS!!! The quality it awesome, built like a tank. It?s a bit heavy but nothing to dread over. I would only suggest buying this if you?re looking for a Ampeg less than 800 bucks or you want the look of an SVT amp. If you got the money (and I don?t) go for the real thing and get a SVT.

SIMPLICITY, SOUND, FUNCTION

By Stan-YJtIh

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

Obviously, from reviews I've read, many other bassists share the same enthusiasm for the SVT450H as I do, and for many of the same reasons. First off, this is one of the purest forms of simplicity you will find in a modern professional grade amplifier. Features only what you need, nothing more, and nothing less. Right above the input jack is an ideal location for a factory mounted mute switch. Hint, hint Ampeg. The vintage style case is aesthetically pleasing, and the additional bulk provides a great place inside for packing cables, etc. for transporting and storage between shows and rehersals. This amp replaces a good dependable Bassman 400 head, mainly because it is so much easier to use, albeit a little on the pricey side. Completing my setup is a tried and true SVT410HLF cabinet and passive Fender Jazz, with no pedals or effects. Mostly play the local bar and club circuit and occasional outdoor events, basically what this equipment was designed to do and it does this very well. The tone this thing produces is almost unbelievable for a solid state amplifier. No, it doesn't sound exactly like its larger tube model siblings, but it's not inferior either. It's just different, and not as loud. If you want more volume, buy the larger amp. The Classic Series cabinets, or equvalents, are all good choices for the SVT450H, and there are other multi cabinet configurations you can use, depending of course, on your specific needs. At the risk of sounding redundant to some of you, allow me to reiterate on the importance of matching the impedance of your speaker configuration to that of the amp (4 ohms in this case). So many bassists, and guitarists, don't seem to understand this. Don't be one of them, and you will almost certainly be satisfied. Simplicity, sound, function; what more do you need?

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

Now Obviously this is not the best amp you can get, but... If you want a great sounding amp for a great price this is it!! If you are looking for an amp close to the tube sound this is the amp for you! I own it and I absolutely love it! I had an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro before this one and I love this one much more! I use it with an 8x10 cab and it sounds amazing! Looks great! Works excellent! I love it! Such a warm clean sound! You will not be disappointed!

Disappointed

By T-Bone

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

I really don't have any huge complaints about this amp. Quality seems fine . It's certainly doesn't live up to the claims of output 450w@4ohm. My GK Backline 600 claims to 350w @4ohm and there's no audible difference between the two. Not worth the extra bulk (half of the cabinet is empty space)and certaintly not worth the difference in price.I love the quality of Ampeg and after looking around and trying more amp heads I'll probably buy another AMPEG ..just not this one.

The Legend of The Dark Tower

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

Built like a tank this amp blows away amps that have 1500 watt bench marks. (maybe some of those other companies are fibbing... I think so.)The 1970's style case seems like a minus until you find out that your pre amp fits perfectly in the back already hooked into the effects loop there by removing all the noise that comes with front loading your signal chain. If there is a minus to this amp it comes in one word. Tolex. The purchase of an amp case removes that. So, if your grandmother coated her beloved couch in plastic you should put your head in a case... You wouldn't care your guitar around with out a case right? This amp has it in the two places where an amp must produce. Dependability and Tone. If it doesn't work then you don't need it and if it doesn't sound good you don't need it. Luckily this amp is here to save you from amps that break all the time and sound horrid... Except no substitutions. Go AMPEG!Buy this and don't mess around with anything else but the Ampeg 8x10 cab. For less then 2000 dollars you can have a your own DARK TOWER!!!
