I play in a classic rock cover band and I picked this amp up sight unheard. But I'm blown away with the power for a solid state amp. The EQ helps with a fat sound if its all at level, or if you make a frown face with the dials, you get a crunch sound without a pedal. Some users say the power isn't enough, but you have to remember it's a 4 Ohm amp. If you only connect 1 cab, it's gotta be a 4 Ohm cab to get all 450 watts working. If you have an 8 Ohm cab, you're only getting half the power. I run a 4x10 and a single 15 cab and there's more power than you'll need. The cabs have to be 8 Ohm cabs to equal the 4 Ohm limit and you get all 450 watts working for you. No need to patch into the house sound board. You'll be rattling the glasses off the bar shelf at 5 on the volumn dial. And for the price, you get the power with real tube sound.

I purchased an svt 450 about two years ago after joining a band where I needed a bit more volume than the 200 watt 1x15 fender I had. I paired it with the 410 half stack, and I was completely shocked that the 400 watt head had less power or drive than the fender. After using it for two years, I've decided to go back to my old fender because it's lighter and it sounds better, and ahem, is LOUDER. In any case, this doesn't even begin to emulate one of the classic ampeg tube amps, so if you're looking for that sound, save your money and go for the classic! Oh, a big plus, however, is that the chassis on this thing is solid. I threw it against a brick wall twice last week and it never broke, so if you're looking for a head to throw against the wall, this is the one for you!

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

I recently decided to upgrade from my 150 watt amp to something that could stand up to larger gigs. Boy, did I ever upgrade! I love everything about this amp from the quality of the construction to the tonal possibilties. I paired the SVT450H with the SVT-410HLF cab.(perfect match!) The low B on my Spector has come alive! No muddy tone. Notes are clear and defined. I could not be happier. Believe me, If you own a 5-string, this is your amp!

Now Obviously this is not the best amp you can get, but... If you want a great sounding amp for a great price this is it!! If you are looking for an amp close to the tube sound this is the amp for you! I own it and I absolutely love it! I had an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro before this one and I love this one much more! I use it with an 8x10 cab and it sounds amazing! Looks great! Works excellent! I love it! Such a warm clean sound! You will not be disappointed!

SIMPLICITY, SOUND, FUNCTION

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

Obviously, from reviews I've read, many other bassists share the same enthusiasm for the SVT450H as I do, and for many of the same reasons. First off, this is one of the purest forms of simplicity you will find in a modern professional grade amplifier. Features only what you need, nothing more, and nothing less. Right above the input jack is an ideal location for a factory mounted mute switch. Hint, hint Ampeg. The vintage style case is aesthetically pleasing, and the additional bulk provides a great place inside for packing cables, etc. for transporting and storage between shows and rehersals. This amp replaces a good dependable Bassman 400 head, mainly because it is so much easier to use, albeit a little on the pricey side. Completing my setup is a tried and true SVT410HLF cabinet and passive Fender Jazz, with no pedals or effects. Mostly play the local bar and club circuit and occasional outdoor events, basically what this equipment was designed to do and it does this very well. The tone this thing produces is almost unbelievable for a solid state amplifier. No, it doesn't sound exactly like its larger tube model siblings, but it's not inferior either. It's just different, and not as loud. If you want more volume, buy the larger amp. The Classic Series cabinets, or equvalents, are all good choices for the SVT450H, and there are other multi cabinet configurations you can use, depending of course, on your specific needs. At the risk of sounding redundant to some of you, allow me to reiterate on the importance of matching the impedance of your speaker configuration to that of the amp (4 ohms in this case). So many bassists, and guitarists, don't seem to understand this. Don't be one of them, and you will almost certainly be satisfied. Simplicity, sound, function; what more do you need?

Its...ok...

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

I have had this amp for 6 years now so I have had a couple of minutes to turn the knobs and listen to how it sounds. First thing first, it stopped working for me after 1 year of using it (gigging, rehearsals, and recording). It was a effects loop problem that prevented the input signal from going out the external speaker output, also the XLR line out could not directly hold a cable. Ampeg has incredible customer support. I just sent them my receipt, warranty card, and description of the problem. Presto, in 2 weeks I was back on stage. Second, I do not believe that this amp is 450w as advertised, it has a very weak signal output in my opinion. If you?re playing a medium size club/bar you will need to mic or DI. Third, it does not sound like a SVT at all! MOSFET? I don?t think so. It is basically the B2RE in a black box (the worst Ampeg out there bar-none, went through 2 in 1 week). My suggestion, get a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI and hook it up to this baby. It will LOOK and SOUND like a SVT-CL and/or SVT-VR. This unit has basic controls and a EQ which can come in handy. I run this head though the Ampeg SVT-410HLF cab, Fender Mexican P-bass (active EMG pick-ups), and with the Tech 21 DI used any my pre-amp it ROCKS!!! The quality it awesome, built like a tank. It?s a bit heavy but nothing to dread over. I would only suggest buying this if you?re looking for a Ampeg less than 800 bucks or you want the look of an SVT amp. If you got the money (and I don?t) go for the real thing and get a SVT.

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

Built like a tank this amp blows away amps that have 1500 watt bench marks. (maybe some of those other companies are fibbing... I think so.)The 1970's style case seems like a minus until you find out that your pre amp fits perfectly in the back already hooked into the effects loop there by removing all the noise that comes with front loading your signal chain. If there is a minus to this amp it comes in one word. Tolex. The purchase of an amp case removes that. So, if your grandmother coated her beloved couch in plastic you should put your head in a case... You wouldn't care your guitar around with out a case right? This amp has it in the two places where an amp must produce. Dependability and Tone. If it doesn't work then you don't need it and if it doesn't sound good you don't need it. Luckily this amp is here to save you from amps that break all the time and sound horrid... Except no substitutions. Go AMPEG!Buy this and don't mess around with anything else but the Ampeg 8x10 cab. For less then 2000 dollars you can have a your own DARK TOWER!!!

I've used plenty of amps and cabs since I started playing and I've finally found the perfect sound and tone. This amp powers my my Ampeg 8x10 and it is incredible. So much tone and SO much versatility. If you have the small amount of cash to buy this very inexpensive amp then buy it. IT IS FANTASTIC! I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING OTHER THAN AMPEG!

The ampeg svt450h has great sound whether you're playing low on the E string, mid neck on the A and D strings, or anywhere on the G string. I never would have thought a solid state amp could have such warm tone. Plus plenty of power for any musician!

I've been an Ampeg addict forever and this head will not let you down! I play it through a SVT-410HE and SVT-15E and this amp just purrs like a kitten. If you want a particular sound, you can probably find it. Simple, durable, sweet tone and just a great amp overall. My only delta on this amp is lack of a foot pedal for the EQ. But beware, your bandmates will tell u to turn it down! At 450 watts, it puts out just a wall of sound! You will never need another amp head again.

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

I've had the 450 for about an hour now, and I'm already blown away. Just traded in my SVT 3-Pro, and can already hear and feel the difference. Amazing power, simple front panel, and an easy to use EQ. I had the SVT-150H when I was younger (basically the little, little brother to this amp) and have longing for the tone of that amp with more power. I found it, and am so pleased. On top of all that, Guitar Center will no longer be carrying this model, so I got it for $450, brand new, sent directly from Ampeg (cause they didn't have it in stock). My sales guy, Barret, is awesome. My only qualm so far is, the speakon isn't working. I might just have the wrong type of cable (although it worked fine hooking the 3-pro to my 810 with), but it's not a big deal. Highly recommend this amp, but get it quick in case Ampeg decides to discontinue.

real Ampeg tone, modest pricetag

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

The Ampeg SVT450H is a rare gem in the bass amp world. It combines classic Ampeg looks, tone, and feel into one modestly priced rig. While many players from the old school still hang on to the "tube or nothing" mentality, I have to admit to using this amp on a regular basis. What you get is 450-watts of pure bliss. It's the closest thing to real tube tone you will ever find in a solid-state amp! And if you don't believe it, go play one yourself. You will be shocked to say the least. And if 450 watts isn't enough for you, get your head checked out. Odds are you will never turn this baby up past 5.Complaints? I'm stumped. I have spend hours playing on this amp and found nothing to whine about. The graphic EQ is perfect for finding just the right balance, and the XLR line out will make your sound guy smile. In case you were wondering, recording direct from the XLR output sounds superb. So why waste money on a direct box or some modeling amp?Get the real Ampeg sound - live or in the studio - with this beast. You won't regret your decision.

Ampeg SVT 450H Classic Series Head

By jayzon

Comments about Ampeg SVT450H 450W Classic Series Head:

First off let me start with the fact that I love simplicity in a bass head. I crank the gain to 7 or 8, bass at 7, mid at 3, and treble at 7 or 8, turn off the 9 band EQ, and set the master at 7 and let me tell you it sounds like a freakin 8x10 rig but with more low end. I am in a metal band so I do not find the need to use effects or weird sounds in our music. I love the raw sound of the guitar to the amp and nothing else to get in the way. This head is perfect for that plain and simple. The only other head I would consider is the SVT Classic all tube head, to me this is the poor man's SVT. I gave it an 8 on features because I was dissapointed that there was no tuner out with a mute switch, but I resolved that with the KORG DT-7 tuner with mute switch. That also explains the 7 rating on value, for this price you should at least have that feature. Overall this is a great head plenty of power and great tone. I run this head with the SVT 410HLF, which is the perfect combination. I play loud metal with two loud guitarists (both have 4x12 halfstacks) my rig fits into the mix perfectly, never distorted just raw powerful earth shaking bass tone. If you play metal in a band and you are looking for a bass rig to last look no further. Like I said unless you can afford the Classic you should go with this.

This head is simply THE BEST solid state amp out there, Beautiful warm tone, graet price and very versitile. I play it through a SVT-610CL. I've been wanting to upgrade to the SVT-CL head also, but with this amp I'm in no hurry for the money. The only thing that I personally need to complete my rig is the Black Finger for some nice tube compression for a nice punchy tone, that will be in my possesion soon. :) bottom line, this is the amp to get!
