This amp is absolutely amazing. It is a pretty loud 100 watt amp and great tone for the money. The gain knob is very handy. The key is the preamp tubes. They are the same as the SVT. I wish they could replace the 4 6l6's with 2 6550's or KT 88's to further enhance the SVT sound. People have been compaining about volume with this amp. When you are playing live, the idea is not to have insane stage volume, but to actually hear your bandmates so you can figure out what is going on on stage, especially in an inmprov environment, so you can have a good show. If you want loud, then get a good PA and mike your stuff, then get a power amp to further power your system. 100 tube watts is plenty loud for anything except at extremely large venues. I use it with a 4x10+1x15 and it is quite loud (almost overpowering at some times). it is a bit expensive, but it is money well spent.

Many years ago, 1978, I bought a beautiful V-4B with an SVT cab. This was a time when all guitar players were using Marshall or Hiwatt with at least a 4x12, sometimes 2 of them. I had the BEST bass tone ever, always plenty loud and punchy. Then came the era when you had to have a power amp, preamp and all those 3 ways speaker cabs, so I sold my Ampeg rig...never been happy with any of the hybrids heads since, so now I'm looking for tube bass amp again. I tried the V-4BH and I was very dissapointed. First, it feels cheap, the are using different transfo, even the tubes are changed..the amp weight about 20lbs lighter. So I went out an bought the SVT-VR and this is the Ampeg sound , everything is there, even the rocker switchs!! I would have love to buy the V-4BH, but it wasn't even close to the original one for me...The SVT-VR is by far the best amp Ampeg produced in a long long time. Buy it.

I bought this used in 2006 as my first tube head I belive mine is from the year 2000. ive been on tour with this head and its never given me a problem. I love the sound of the 5881 tubes there cheaper and sound very clean. ive played out of svtcl and loved this amp so much more. people say its not loud but there lying I play mine on volume 3 at shows. ive owned many heads but this one is by far the best one for the money. a lot of my other ampegs and other amps have hit the dust but every since I bought this it has never given me a problem I couldn't fix. if your looking for a tube tone amp and tight on money I say go for this amp its everything you want and more I hate ampeg but I love this amp more than anything and will never get rid of it
    amazing
    worth every penny

I am the type person I like to research my purchase before I fork over the cash. Well I finally forked over the cash and can honestly say this little beast is the best sounding amp I have ever had. I have owned swr peavey carvin and this sounds better and has allowed me to regain my enthusiam for playing again. Some say this little monster is not loud enuff, I say if it aint loud enuff you aint playin music you making noise. I play music that is designed to be listened to attentively not force feed to you. I love this amp

    Beautiful sound.

This is an all-tube head that we use for weekly practice sessions. The difference between this type of amp and a non-tube amp is easily discernible to all listeners. There is a warmth to the sound from this head that can't be beat. Price and weight are right, too.

Think about this for 1 minute

    By Stephen May

No matter what type of gear is being pushed at you, plain truth is that only a few understand the amazing flavor of a tube pre, tube power amp! If you haven't experienced it, you don't know. If you're reading this you either know, or you've heard about it. I owned this amp, and after selling it, I find myself constantly wishing I still had it. I'm always looking. 100 watts of tube is like 250 watts of anything else. The sound is everything, and if you need more power, take the balanced output to the house. This is yesterdays magic at a fair price. Son tubes will be out of reach to all of us! Enjoy.

    SVT...mini

    By Anonymous

This is a great sounding little (relatively, at 40lbs.) unit. I used to have the big brother some years back and unfortunately, I've spent gobs on trying to recreate that tone with racks of equipment. The V4BH is not the end all, be all, but if an SVT at half the weight; a 1/3 of the volume and all the tone is what your after, you won't be disappointed. (If you're drummer has a lead hand and a foot to match...don't make a mistake and buy this lower powered amp - and because YOU made the mistake, end up writing a bad review for a very decent piece of equipment. This one's not for tearin' down walls, but plenty for...and excels at moderate sound levels)

    no power

    By Keegen

    from Arkansas

i thought that if i was dropping nine hundred dollars on an ampeg that has eleven tubes i would have gotten a little more power. But nope here I am selling an amp that has a perfectly good sound to something that is quite a bit bigger. Save your money. I promise it will be worth it.
