Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This overdrive is very versatile. It can go from crunch to very heavy gain. You can experiment with different 12AX7 tubes if you don't like the stock tube.If you put a compressor after it you can get M.B. rectifier type drive.Don't do the Bitmo mod,it's not worth it-trust me.It's perfect as is-AND the price is right.Don't stomp on the knobs, they attach directly to the circuit board-FYI.

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Been on a pedal frenzy lately. Have one rig that is just about perfect but was looking to build a second one specifically for a practice combo amp that, aside from overdrive, chorus and a less than perfect reverb is pretty much bereft of other effects. Stumbled accross this pedal on the cheap and did some research. Despite my less than positive experiences with some other Beringer equipment (mostly PA/recording stuff) the reviews persuaded me to give this a try.

I am pleasantly surprised. The stock tube did not blow me away (ok...a little noisy/muddy even at low gain) but after swapping a couple other 12A_7 tubes have found a couple really cool sounding options. So a couple lessons learned...mostly that, despite the fact that this appears to be a starved plate system, the tube definitely comes into play. It's worth the time to google what alternate tubes others have lucked into and spend the small amount required to swap it out.

Gain, volume and tone controls are all responsive and tweaks make a notable difference - lots of good combinations with distinct sounds. Note that this is a BIG pedal - a space eater that doesn't really fit on most single line pedal boards. Also - it has a "soft" engagement - i.e. no satisfying click - so you need to visually (or audibly) check to make sure you've switched it on/off. Bypass quality appears to be very good. Have not really had the need to use the noise gate - it's the first pedal in my rig after the wah so it's getting a pretty clean feed.

Overall - its not in the class of my Radial London and Hollywood Bones pedals but for an inexpensive tube driven pedal for a secondary rig it has definitely been worth the price I paid.

    Hope this review is helpful.

Don't let the name Behringer scare you off from buying this pedal! I run this pedal into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amp (on the clean channel) and what an awesome tone! This pedal is a Steal of a Deal!

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

    I can't believe I haven't reviewed this pedal yet.
I have had this pedal for 5 or 6 years now. When I play a Solid State amp, I will NEVER play without this pedal. To me, it is amazing.
There is no hum, buzz, or any other obtrusive noise coming from the pedal---it puts through the cleanest of clean, and a sweet David Gilmore distortion (through my Stratocaster).
I dialed in my desired sound, and pretty much leave the knobs and switches alone.
We all know Behringer puts out "hit or miss" products, and slap a decent price on. This pedal is a "hit"...nothing cheap about the construction and materials. Very strong, very durable.
I didn't find a need to change out the tubes...the stock tubes in mine do just fine. Not sure if it depends on the guitar and amp combination one is using...but I have no issues with the 'sound' of these tubes with a Fender guitar through a Fender amp.
I don't use a pedal board, so I only have good things to say about the size of this thing (that's why I put "Big" in the Pro's section above)---I LIKE that it's nice and big. Easy to find the switch in any situation.
This pedal will not disappoint, and the price is fantastic. Other brands will charge two to three or even 4 times as much, and may not sound near as good as the Tube Monster. Order one!

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

When I first played through this "pedal"(it's huge!) I didn't like the sound at all. The gain was very crackly and not smooth when playing through (Les Paul Studio, Ibanez RG320). I replaced the Bugera 12AX7C (cheap Chinese made tube) with a JJ ECC83 (12AX7) and WOW what a difference. Gain is now no longer brittle sounding and rolls off smooth with guitar volume or the Gain knob. I am very satisfied with the tones this thing produces and use it in place of my original ValveKing 100's high gain stage. The noise gate is a big plus as well. Overall I would recommend this pedal to anyone on a budget looking for some cool Zeplin / AC-DC style sounds.

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

For anyone considering purchasing one of these pedals, allow me to make one suggestion: buy a different vacuum tube for it!
Don't get me wrong, the stock tube is actually a very highly rated tube from what I've read. The problem is, it's far too high-gain of a tube for the solid state opamp that follows it to drive the tone stack, resulting in a scratchy, fizzy tone that leaves much to be desired.
Any of the 12a*7 tubes will work in it, but you have to keep in mind the gain level of each tube, and use that to select a tube based on the tone you're looking for. A 12ax7 has a gain rating of 100, with the 12at7 at 70, the 12ay7 at 50, and the 12au7 at 20.
Myself, I went with a Mesa 12AT7, partly because I was looking for a more modern, Mesa Dual Rectifier tone, partly because that's just what was available without ordering one online. Changing the tube took me all of five minutes, and the difference it made was stunning. While it didn't quite make it into Dual Rectifier territory, it's definitely somewhere between that and a Marshall Plexi. That's not a bad thing.

All in all, I'm glad I bought this pedal!

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Preliminary comments: Just got this so have only used it a short while. Like others have mentioned, the drive gain is crazy hot with the stock tube. I did order this with a 12AT7 tube and that tamed it quite a bit. My guess is that the lower gain 12AY7 would be an even better choice. I'll likely give one of those tubes a try.

The 3-band tone controls allow for excellent control of the drive tone. I don't have a noisy source so i couldn't really verify how well the noise gate works with pickup hum.

The Gain control is very nonlinear (almost switch-like). I'd prefer a little more control there. Perhaps the lower gain 12ZY7 tube will calm down the gain control non-linearity. ???

Overall, this pedal is a very good value with the caveat that the stock tube will likely disappoint most everyone except metal shredders.

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I had read a lot of reviews that said to get this pedal and replace the tube. When I bought it a year ago I didn't see a need to change the tube, but I just replaced the stock tube with a JJ 12AX7 and It has made a HUGE difference in sound quality! If you're on the fence about this pedal, I recommend buying it and trying it out. If you aren't satisfied with the tone, just get a tube that fits your playing style and budget.

Comments about Behringer VT999 Vintage Tube Monster Classic Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Over about three decades of playing, I've never really used any type of overdrive/distortion. I've done it with amps. I purchased this to get more versatility out of my Jet City 20HV (wonderful head by the way). When this pedal is used as overdrive, in front of the amp, it is transparent and just sounds as if my Jet City head has an additional channel. Absolutely awesome. On it's own, on top of an otherwise clean sound, it can go from mild break up to very dirty crunch. It's also very touch sensitive. This would have been worth it for double or more the asking price.
