OVERVIEW

The ultimate in high-voltage tube distortion flexibility.

The HT-DUAL pedal from Blackstar's HT Range of tube overdrive pedals features true high-voltage (300V) circuitry and are packed with innovations and tone. The revolutionary, patent-applied-for tone-shaping feature ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) will redefine the tonal expectations of guitarists.

HT-DUAL pedal's Channel 1 has either Clean or Crunch modes so it can be used clean, as a boost or overdrive. Channel 2 gives distortion tones from super crunch right up to screaming lead. The unique switching operation will transform a single channel vintage amp into a 3-channel tone machine. The ISF control takes you from 'British Valve' to 'Modern American' and anywhere in-between.

Add to this the no-compromise, speaker-emulated output and you have the most cost-effective way of getting real tube tones direct to disk or tape.

Pure Tube Distortion
The HT-DUAL has high voltage tube design for true tube dynamics and feel. 2 cascaded ECC83 triode stages for gain from warm boost to screaming lead. Enhanced tone network for massive tonal flexibility with traditional passive network musicality. Patent-Applied-For ISF control allows access to infinite new sounds. Emulated output is a new benchmark design for pro direct recording sounds. High-integrity bypass for silent switching and driving long cables.

So whether you're playing live or recording, with the HT Range of pedals you can finally get the sound you want.

There is a lot to say on this pedal. But many others have already written pretty much on it. So I'll briefly go over the very key points:

1. Do buy it; Better than many transistor driven pedals. A tube supported pedal is a totally different experience. I am living in Turkey and it's almost impossible to purchase this pedal in my country as it's not imported. So I asked my brother to buy it from US. I tell you this to show how much I desired this pedal.

2. When you are buying it also do buy a new 12AX7 tube. There are many options but I preferred to buy the Tungsol 12ax7 Gold-pin tube. The default Sovtek tube is just "Inadequate". With the Tungsol, I reached to the peak of my music expeirence up to now. You can imagine the tone of Ritchie Sambora style stratocaster coming out from this beauty.

3. Changing the tube is a little tricky as you may damage the vertical pcb card. So, also don't forget to use a WD-40 to spray to the pins in order to plug the new tube gently.

4. As this pedal is extremely hot tonally, it will cause some feedback inevitably; this is no failure just the price of getting an amazing tone. So, I may also suggest to have a noise gate at the end of your effects loop or connect to the mixer directly from its emulated output. I think that the emulated output is not so successful. In my opinion, the classic looped way is much better.

5. Warm up the tube at least 10 minutes prior to playing. The tone will show up variety and improvement.

6. The gain and level knobs are a big failure. I just can not understand how the inventor of this pedal can do everything amazingly great and fail with the knobs!!!.

7. Overdrive: Great for seekers of 70s, 80s rock. You can shape the tone via ISF that really results beautifully. ISF feature actually helps you to create multiple options across British to American tones. Really a unique feature!

8. Distortion: Great for solos with the support of a compressor. Not great for heavy metal; if you're looking for something like that, try something else; I'd go for the TC Electronics' Röttweiler . HT-Dual provides distortion that is great for fair rock tones.

9. Comes with its own power adapter. I respect to the producer unlike others who don't add an adapter.

10. Treble, mid and bass can be adjusted individually which is very nice for a studio workout.

11. This pedal is heavy. It's the heaviest pedal I've ever seen, tried or used. The casing is rock solid. The switches are working nice. You can seperately switch from overdrive to clean or distortion to clean or overdrive to distortion or all other variations. Amazing structure...

Sounds fabulous! Switches fail prematurely and make the unit unusable. I feel ripped off. Korg and Blackstar keep telling me the product isn't in stock but when they get it in stock, they will replace my unit. Come on!
This pedal became my favorite distortion overdrive pedal. Overall the pedal's controls work as described and I found myself not being able to gig without it. That only lasted 5 gigs though. I don't stomp on the switches. In fact I leave the pedal on almost all of the time and use my volume control. Seriously, after no more than about 30 actuations of the switches, they have failed.

I contacted Korg and they said they would replace it. This has been since Februray or earlier of 2011. It is Now September 2011 and they still tell me that they will replace it when it comes in stock.

I don't think much of Blackstar and Korg anymore. I will never buy another product from them. I will continue to contact Korg and hope I get my pedal replaced at some point. I have been gigging since I was 14 and I am 53 now. I don't dance on the switches. This is just another company skimping pennies on a component that should be of the highest quality... putting in substandard foot switches is unacceptable. It sounds great! But don't buy it until they solve their manufacturing issues!
Read my rant in the Features section. Switches fail prematurely!!!!
If it worked I would rate it a ten. When it worked I would have given it a ten. It doen't work and the company has not resolved the problem in over 6 months!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal for home use, as I have an Engl Powerball for playing live. I wanted a tube pedal so I could work on the consistency of my playing, since solid state pedals cover too much. This Blackstar pedal works great in that respect. It actually has a little less gain than my Engl (especially at low volumes) so it's even less forgiving for my playing. But the tone is nice and you can get a good amount of variation in gain levels and style. (Doesn't sound like a Powerball, but definitely works for metal)
What is unfortunate, is that from early on in owning this pedal the switches and knobs have been inconsistent and failed on and off (as has been said in other reviews). Luckily I don't use it for playing live, or I would have smashed it by now. Really, for a fairly high-priced pedal, I would expect higher quality components. This pedal is unreliable, and luckily all I need it for is sitting in my living room playing around. It's too bad, because if it was reliable, I'm sure it would make a fantastic preamp for a one-channel tube amp, or a great overdrive/lead tone for live situations. If I trusted Blackstar I might even consider the new Heavy Metal Tube pedal they introduced, but after this one's issues, I'm just gonna try another brand when I'm ready to replace it.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal sounds great, hands down. The only way to get this pedal to sound less than fantastic is to use it incorrectly. Since the gain is all generated with a tube, it needs to be turned up a little bit to do its thing. It's no different than a tube amp in that sense. But once you get it up to a loud bedroom level (or higher) it's a monster. It's a little noisy, but its an all tube pedal. Get a noise gate.

This is a very good pedal, the sound is excellent but the foot switches are really bad. After few use the left switch is broken. I think this company have to work on this and then we will have a real great pedal.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Even after switching tubes from the Sovtek to an Electro-Harmonix, the red channel can be quite noisy even at a lower gain. Maybe I received a lemon, but it's nothing that my ISP Decimator can't control. Technically this is a 3 channel pedal plus bypass. The red channel is what it is, the green channel can be switched between a low gain and clean channel via means of a tiny button by the gain knob. With this setup, I use RED as my main rhythm, green for a lower gain, by pass for clean tone (with fx) and an EQ pedal for a solo boost. If I could get the noise gone completely without sacrificing too much gain, I would give this pedal full ratings. I still recommend the HT-Dual.This pedal is truly awesome and will be the main pedal in my board until something better could possibly come along. With the direct output, I have recorded and even ran direct on stage and had great sound. The ISF feature is amazing, let's me shape the sound I'm looking for in the turn of one knob. The only feature I don't care for is the stacked knobs and single EQ. Even though there is a great difference between the two channels, individual EQ's per would be a great step up.A solid pedal for sure. Well made and easy to maintain as far as cleaning and replacing tubes. For my live setup, I can't think of a more versatile pedal for a killer tube distortion.

Korean Made but HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST DISTORT'N PEDALS OUT THERE!!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Writing a review is not something I typically do unless I've had a really good or really bad experience with something. In this case it was really, unbelievably good. The best way to test this pedal is to play through one & ideally put it in the chain with your rig if you have the ability.

I became familiar with the Blackstar line through a youtube video featuring Gus G doing a demo of Blackstar amps. Even though his style of playing is much heavier & faster than mine, I tested the pedal out in comparison to my very inexpensive, yet tried & true Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal (Made in Japan) that I've had since the 80's and a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver which is a little more expensive but a solid pedal for the price point. Those are two pedals that I've owned for a while, am familiar with and like the sound I am able to achieve with what I'm playing through--especially the Blues Driver as of lately.

When I was looking into getting another distortion pedal, I also compared this pedal with the Pigtronix OFO Disnortion, MXR M78 Custom Badass Distortion, MXR-104 Distortion+ and the Open Road Visual Sound V2 Overdrive pedals. All of which I did not own but am gracious to have a music store rep who likes me & let me give them a test run through my rig.

The winner, hands down... head & shoulders above all of the ones I checked out was the Blackstar HT-Dual. Having two separate channels just adds to the sickness of this pedal... in that you can set up channel 2 as a lead/boosted setting & have channel 1 as a rhythm setting -or- channel 2 as a more distorted sound than channel 1 for more crunch when you need it. This feature definitely opens some doors that the other pedals simply don't offer.

But the REAL meat of the matter is the sound. It produces such clean distortion with complete control of being able to carve the sound you want by adjusting the knobs. Complete transparency, complete definition & presence unlike any other pedal I've played through... almost like watching a great scene in a movie that was filmed in 3D where the objects are just floating around you. If you want to arpeggiate a chord to accentuate the 3rd's, 4th's, octaves, 9th's, etc. on the first three strings... this pedal delivers. If you want to hold a strong chord out to get absolute orgasmic, rich feedback on command... this is the pedal!!! It will cover most applications of distortion from the Stones to Van Halen to Vaughn to Ozzy and all areas in between, over around & beyond...

..definitely on the pricey side, however in my opinion it is well worth the money but again -- play through it first!!!

I'm knocking on wood because fortunately the pedal I received has not presented any of the issues some of the other reviewers mentioned about the switch breaking. I will say if mine does break & is not repairable I will seek out another one. ..it's THAT good! I thought about buying a second one as a back-up but funds aren't flowing that freely at the moment!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought mine from Musicians Friend as a Christmas present to myself 8 years ago and I absolutely love this pedal. I have some of the same problems that other folks have written about. A couple people said it was noisy. Mine is dead quiet. Yes the knobs could be better and yes I swapped out the stock tube for one more for me and it was a pain to do, and yeah I had to clean the potentiometers once and Blah Blah Blah, Whah Whah Whah. Your home needs upkeep and so does your car and about everything else. What did you think was going to happen when you plopped it on the floor and stomped on it a few hundred times? Bottom line is that no other pedal does what this one does. It has cleared my pedal board where I now have the Blackstar, a Chorus, and a Delay. No noise gate, no EQ, no Compressor, all gone now. Aside from a few superficial flaws this thing has been extremely reliable, has unparalleled versatility, and the tone is to die for. I'll do the upkeep on mine for as long as she hangs in there and if/when she dies I am praying that I can buy another one. I'm 54 YO and have been playing guitar since 1970. I've owned a ton of gear over the years and if there is one piece of it that I would not want to be without it's my Blackstar HT Dual. Thank you Blackstar. This pedal has solved a lot of problems for me. And thanks to Musicians Friend for always having the good stuff.

I use channel 1 in crunch mode for a gritty rhythm and channel 2 for main rhythm/lead with gain at about 2 pm. ISF control makes all the difference for finding your preferred tone. Sounds huge! This is an extremely well built, solid, diverse pedal and will not disappoint. Perfect for rock and metal!!!!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a great all around distortion pedal. I play a Cort CR250 with an EMG 81 and 85,into a Boss ME70, and then into a Bugera V55hd and this thing makes it scream. I was unhappy with the distortion sounds I was getting with both the Boss and Bugera, so I plugged this in and was blown away. The rhythm channel is perfect for anywhere to a responsive clean/ crunch mix to a solid super crunch. The Lead channel melts faces, and is amazing. The eq is very responsive, and the ISF feature is one of the best inventions since the electric guitar was invented. Added bonuses include a speaker emulated output for recording, and an included power supply. Bottom line, buy this pedal!

          cheapest route to tube sound

          By James Morton

          from Virginia

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

My quest ends here for the best way to record heavy rhythm guitars quietly and cheaply. My setup: HT Dual -> audio interface -> convolver plug-in loaded with impulse response -> parametric EQ. This gives me the huge sound of miked tube amp, all from a little metal box. The tube in this thing is no gimmick; it's where all the distortion comes from. Real tube distortion has this special throaty, vibratory, resonating quality that really adds power to your power chords. Additional Info: 1) sounds really good through the clean channel of my Roland Cube, 2) Channel 1 on crunch with gain at 90% gives a very articulate distorted sound that works for technical/prog metal though unforgiving to sloppy playing, 3)Channel 2 with gain at 50% gives a stronger but looser bottom, good for leads and more distorted rhythms, 4) Channel 1 on clean has some tube compression to it and breaks up nicely at higher gain. 5) I swapped the tube for a Tung Sol, a bit smoother distortion, but not absolutely necessary since the original Sovtek was already decent sounding. Recommendation: buy this if your amp does not have satisfactory distortion, or if you want a real tube alternative to a pod for direct recording. One of the best purchases I have made.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have used this with a EHX 22 Caliber through a Blackstar 1x12 cab and also for direct recording using NI Guitar Rig cab simulation and am very impressed with the tone of this pedal in both applications. The clean channel gets a nice tube spank and the the lead channel get some nice metal crunch and crank up the gain and get those harmonic bends and squalls.
would be nice if the tube was self serviceable, not really impressed with the Speaker emulated output
had it for a year and half or so with no problems, seems like a solid durable peddle
I don't really have a lot to compare it to in terms of value but am willing to say it's worth the price.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Yes, this pedal sounds amazing! You get basically three very disctintive sounds.Tremendously tweakable and responsive. Sometimes it's like having a little amp at your feet.
The overdrive section reminds me of Ac/Dc or this old school rock sound. It cleans very well using single coils. The distortion sound is heavy, so heavy that your parents might not like it. But you'll know that it's not muddy.
Drawbacks for me are the quality of the knobs. I've already lost one. On the other hand,18v is not an output you usually get in most power supplies so I fin this a real pain in the neck. Is it noisy? Yes, it is but it's a heavy distortion pedal we're talking about, no? I tried not to abuse of the gain knob and have a noise suppressor as well.
It works in solid state amps but for sure you'll get its best through a tube amp.
I had the Seymour Duncan Mayhem before but was very disappointed with its scooped eq plus the hissy high end that made me get rid of it. I was afraid that this would be the same. Well, it's not. This is amazing.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I want to first start out by saying that the tone coming from this pedal is just incredible. I gave it about 5 minutes to warm itself up, and when I strummed my very first chord on the clean channel, I was blown away. The tone was warm, rich, and thick all the way up to maximum gain, and each note was articulate and clear. I was also very impressed with all the features. Both channels have seperate gain and volume controls, with bass, mid, and treble control. One of the cool features on this pedal is the ISF knob. It allows you to change your tone from a woody, British sounding distortion, to a crushing American grit, or anything in between. The only complaints that I have about this pedal, are it's lack of gain, and noisiness. I already have a nice overdrive pedal (VOX Ice 9 OD), and really just wanted the clean and crunch settings on this unit to use as a tube preamp. I was much more concerned with the high-gain distortion side of this pedal. I must say, that while this unit delivers incredible tone, the gain just doesn't do anything for me. In all honesty, it doesn't have any more gain than my overdrive pedal. The second problem, as I mentioned, is the noise coming from this thing. This thing is pretty noisy on it's own, but when you chain it to other distortion effects simultaniously, the noise and feedback is RIDICULOUS. This thing really needs an internal noise gate. Overall, this pedal is amazing. Just not really my style.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got the Blackstar HT dual six days ago, and right out of the box I put it through the paces.First off, with it being a tube distortion pedal i treated it like a tube amp, giving it about 45 to 60 secs. to warm up before playing through it.Right away i could hear the tube warmth and creamy fullbody sound, even before i hit one of the distortions. With channel 1 you get two setting clean and crunch/overdrive. Depending on your tast you can find the sound you're looking for with tweaking the gain level and volume level.Channel 2 has one setting and has a lot of gain. Again you can ajust the gain and volume levels to your liking and find that sound you're looking for. The ISF conture nob is good, i find it to be a bit too mushy or muddy when going toward the brit side so I leave it on the american side. That to is up to what ever you like.So far I have put in about 8 hours of play time with the blackstar and yes like a true tube amp it too, needs a break-in period. I still find the brit side of the ISF to be mushy/muddy but it's a little more brighter now, like before it's a matter of tast. All in all this pedal works. Now the not so good news.the gain and volume nobs are piggy backed and they like to turn each other if you're not aware. So you'll need to use both hands to ajust the gain and volume leveling for either channel 1 or 2.there is only one globel EQ for both channels, I don't have a big problem with that but it would be nice to have two EQs for each of the channels.besides thoughs two short comings, this pedal is well werth the price and can really make your solid state amp sound warmer and more tube like. the settings you get with channel 1 really gives you a lot of options and channel 2 can really make your amp sing. I have been very pleased with this pedal.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The only negative I've found with this pedal is that the knobs seem kind of cheap, especially the dual knobs where if you turn one, the other will turn also. If they improve the quality of the knobs, this would get a perfect rating from me. The sound quality is unbeatable from any similar pedal I've heard. I used to have a tube screamer but this pedal beats it easily. The amp emulator allows you to plug the pedal right into your PA board and disregard ever using an amp again. Of course you can also use it in conjunction with an amp also. Both channels get pretty dirty, which is good. I was afraid the lesser of the channels (channel 1) wouldn't give me enough distortion, but it's great. I set Ch 1 at a lower volume than ch 2, and use ch2 for solos. You can get a great variety of tones from this pedal. Very fun to play around with! I strongly recommend this pedal.

As far as tone....the pedal sounds great....no complaints, however, it is cheaply built. I'm very gentle with my gear, and the channel one switch came apart during a show. I took it back the next day and the guitar tech at the store went through 3 or 4 new units, and they all had the same problem....cheap hardware.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

A really solid pedal, I gave it a 4.5 on value as I had to change the stock tube (Sovtek 12AX7) to a 12AT7 (I got a NOS 5751 in the mail, cant wait to try that out) to tame this beast as it would overdrive too soon. It's built like a tank and should last for ages. Another plus is that it comes with its own power supply. After the change it is a dream come true. I have been searching for a long time for a true tube distortion/overdrive pedal as the overdrive channel on my Peavey Classic 50 sucks. But ALL the other pedals I tried sound too digital. I have an Ibanez TS 808 before this on my pedal board. These two pedals in concert with each other give me 5 unique sounds going all the way from a mild blues to a fierce beast if needed. BUY IT .. BUY A 12AT7 or a 5751 TUBE REPLACEMENT .. PERFECT!

Best Distortion Pedal I've Tried So Far!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Great sounding pedal. See other reviews for the Pros and Cons. I just wanna say last time I went to a rehearsal room and plug it into a crappy Yorkville multi-purpose amplifier, and my guitar sound beat my bandmates' JCM and Peavy tube amps EASILY. It's funny to see them dropping their jaws. When I bought my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with extension cab in the sound was PHENOMENAL. Well to be honest I think my BBE Sonic Stomp helped too. I set Ch.1 at slight gain, sorta like a clean boost, while Ch.2 to almost full gain distortion. At around the same price you won't find any better deal. Tried Vox Bulldog too - The HT Dual beats it EASY. BUY.

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DUAL Tube Dual Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Fantastic pedal with an incredible range of tone. I own two of these. The idea was to have some high quality tube amp channels on the floor to be used with any good, clean amp. I bought two so that I could dial one in on a more "American" setting and have the other in a more "British" mode. The ISF control is genius and really lets you tweak the focus of the mids and lows in. Just one of these pedals will turn your single channel amp into a three channel monster. Two will let you have a five channel amp. Seems to work well with a solid state amp with a good clean sound and even better on a tube amp. I've coupled these with the HT-DistX on my pedalboard to get all of my raw amp sounds.Only two minor complaints: the power supply, and the direct output. The power supply is 16V AC, so that means you can't power it from any pedalboard power supply like the Pedal Power or DC Brick. And the direct, speaker-emulated output seems to have a pretty low output level on all of my pedals.Other than that, these are probably the best distortion pedals money can buy. Very tubey and authentic sounding.
