Comments about Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 50 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
Honestly, the tubes are a huge part of any amp's capability to produce your tone, and not every player has the desire, knowledge, and tools to play bench tech and invest the hours required to learn...safely. With the right selections here, you literally have a vintage Marshall Plexi, with the ability to approximate VOX AC30 clean tones; this is a fantastic mix of sounds and a capability I am not really aware of in any other major brand of amp. Hughes and Kettner Statesman 50 is the absolute closest, lacks some of the gain, and will cost you another $200 or so. I had the 20W Studio model for a couple of months, and while the sound was excellent, it dd not have the clean headroom to push a 2X12 in my venue. These ex-Marshall alumni who are designing the Blackstar product line are some of the same people who have brought us benchmark amp products for years; without the shackles on them as to what their products have to sound like, we are getting to see some "outside of the box" ways to produce our tone(s) and thoroughly enjoy the journey that effort should be.
The Infinite Shape Feature to create more of a blend capability between British EL84 Class A "sounds" and American 6L6GC/GE tone is useful, but another reviewer had commented that the tone becomes a bit too dark on the far end of the British side, and I would agree. Nonetheless this is a nice and useful feature. Ditto for the reverb "voice" switch from bright to dark, which I have never seen in a comparable amp. Having a master tone stack, with separate volume and gain controls for the clean and drive channels is a terrific setup. Metal toggle switches for power on and standby, nice tolex covering with gold piping in the front like a vintage DSL or Plexi; speaker connections of almost any normal variation you would need, and a great sounding parallel effects loop. Nice buckstiched black leather handle on vintage chrome mounts. I had an excellent vinyl cover with piping made for about $4 it would have been nice to have some thin nylon version included with their logo, a la Fender, but......!
Even though the HT Venue Series are supposed to be budget line, I can't see why this product series wouldn't last under fire of gigging with some reasonable care and a decent ATA case. My ONLY complaint in this particular category is Blackstar's selection of TAD 12AX7WA preamp and EL34B-STR/6CA7 power tubes. These tubes, made in China by Shuguang, are just fair in my opinion for overall sound quality, and the brand has a bit of a history with reliability. On the other hand, Orange and Marshall are now putting them into their current products, and feel the new gold plated grid and heavy glass on the power tubes gives improvement in this area. Especially if you want to obtain some VOX-like clean chimey tones, you're gonna have to get rid of these. Ditto if you are a high gain artist, the 12AX7WA's are lower microphonically, but this comes at the expense of gain. Put a set of JJ or Tung Sol 12AX7's, and a pair of Tung Sol or Mullard EL34B(both from the New Sensor plant in Russia)power tubes in and get ready to rock! Korean manufacture of English design; fit and finish of all elements, components, wiring, and cabinetry was perfect. Excellent ventilation on top and back.
A 50W all tube head will drive nearly any half stack of 4X12's to performance levels in small auditoriums. This amp is named the Club 50, and is absolutely perfect for venues up to about 300 or so. For this quality of tone, at this price level, the amp is a steal.....buy one! You cannot touch the level of performance in a comparable Marshall or Fender product without spending over $1000.
