Honestly, this was my very first pedal i ever bought. This was 11 years ago and it's still pumping. I always resort back to the METAL ZONE. I have tried many pedals at music stores and some are good and some are just a waste. In my opinion this is my favorite out of any other I have tried. In the beginning the feedback was annoying but hell, you get that with anything BUY A NOISE GATE!! I strongly stand by this pedal to this day, like I said 11 years and still going strong... BUY IT!!!

EQ controls are very responsive, and usable tones from practically any era or genre of metal can be found. Keep in mind 'responsive' is just another word for 'touchy', and quite a bit of tweaking may be required to find a tone that you find suitable. The gain is usable at nearly every point in the knob's sweep, save for the maximum setting, which muds everything up (though to some this is desirable). I didn't find it to be overly noisy, or cause tons of unwanted feedback, but every setup will be different.

I find that the best use for this pedal is in a practice setting. It won't be a proper replacement for a good high gain amp, but it does a decent imitation.

Not for everyone, Still Fantastic!

Pros

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

I bought one of these used and got a fantastic deal on it. First off, I want to say that this pedal is not for everybody. It is designed for metal, so it won't work for any other genre. Also, while the EQ settings are awesome, it would probably be really difficult for anyone inexperienced with this type of stuff to get the tone set right. For a beginner musician, this pedal would probably make your guitar sound horrible.

With that said, if you carefully listen to your instrument and take the time to dial the EQ right, this can make your guitar sound amazing. This is a fantastic distortion pedal for any experienced metal player. It is very well constructed and sounds great. Plus I love the way it looks, I hate it when metal distortion pedal housings are made from cheesy looking bright colored plastic. The matte black finished steel of this one looks cool and actually fits with the genre it's designed for.

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

This is another good pedal I purchased used for a steal. This thing is LOUD and gets a fair amount of feedback and overtones. Definitely not for everybody. It takes some time to learn how to use the EQ knobs, but they give you a lot of control over your tone! I'm not sure if it is analog or digital.

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

Like some of the other reviewers, I was hesitant to get this pedal since a lot of people enjoy bashing it. However, I play almost exclusively rock/metal and wanted something with some real punch to it. This definitely has it! Now, for those that don't play rock/metal, this pedal isn't for you, so you shouldn't buy it and then bash it. If you want Pink Floyd buy the Adaptive Distortion pedal. If you don't know anything about EQ, stay away since you'll be like a chicken doing algebra. However, if you know where you want your tones beefed up and can take a minute to set your tuning right, you'll be very pleased. I've gotten sounds from the lead on Avenged Sevenfold's So Far Away to the crunchy rhythm of Lamb of God's Laid to Rest.

I have an Xotic SP compressor in front of this pedal and some of the sounds that I get are absolutely amazing. Overall I am glad I took the jump in buying this despite so many bad reviews. For me, it's exactly what I want.

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

I was pretty hesitant to buy this pedal because of all the people bashing it, but I finally just said to heck with it and bought one for myself; and right out of the box, I absolutely love it! It's really well made and durable like every Boss pedal I've ever used, and with more EQ knobs, it really lets you create your own sound/tone. The people who only have negative things to say about this pedal, probably have no clue how to set an EQ. If you play metal or hard rock and are looking for a AWESOME distortion pedal, get this one. You won't regret it!

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

This pedal improved my tone greatly. I run a laguna le200gms through my FX into a Peavey Classic Chorus 212 (pretty old, but nice amp) the peavey can give great tones for grunge, classic rock, etc. But for a more metal tone, it was lacking a bit. that, in addition to the fact that i did not have a footswitch, led to me buying this pedal. you can get all kinds of sounds, from a more broken up clean, to much heavier. i will eventually be purchasing a randall, and using the distortion from the head. but if youve a got an amp that just cant quite get you the heavier tone you want, this baby is for you. also very durable. its a boss! i would reccomend getting a power supply as well. when the 9v starts running out of battery it doesnt just quit, the tone just starts to fade.

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

Everyone loves to hate on the Metal Zone. But honestly, its not bad at all IF you have a good amp. A lot of noobs run this thing into little practice amps that have no tone to begin with. If you have a good amp and cab and play around with the EQ you can get some incredibly heavy tones out of it. Lowering the treble and boosting the mids a little will thicken this pedal up a bit. Using a noise supressor will cut down on the feedback and hiss. A lot of bands from the 90s like Cannibal Corpse, Crowbar, and At the Gates used the 'Zone so that should give you an idea of some of the sounds to be had. I love the tone I get out of this pedal.

Comments about Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Effects Pedal:

I love the MT-2, though it is a complicated pedal. I usually like very simple effects pedals but the metal zone is my exception. After you spend the time to dial it in where you want it, it sounds amazing for playing metal and soloing. Also, if you crank down the treble, it makes a very good bass distortion, especially when combined with a wah pedal. It's a good pedal all around, but probably not best suited for a beginner because it requires a decent understanding of equalization.
