I have been playing for 40 years. A few things I have learned along the way is to buy quality and this amp is quality. If you need a name, go buy another amp that costs much more. Amps can be designed anywhere, Germany, U.K. or U.S.A. since production costs are less in China, they are all made there, just like all the resistors, capacitors, I.C's, transistors, pots, you name it, that are in all the amps, name brands too. I would prefer to buy an amp made in the USA, but that's not the case, they are made in China. Before anyone tries to B.S. you about this amp, ask them How do They Know ? There are a few manufactures that procuduce the amps, boards and components for all the brand names. I have A/B's this amp with the name brands, hearing is believing. Buy this amp and you will have saved money for the other equipment you want. If you don't believe me, just call your favorite amp company and find out for yourself, where they are made and get the details as to the city and factory, ask where the parts come from, they are selling their name. They know where they are made, but they may not want to tell you. Go A/B the amp, same guitar, same speaker cab, see (hear) for yourself, you be the judge.
Just like the Ampeg SVT3PRO, you can add in or out the EQ section. Just like the Ampeg, the rear panel is virtually identical.
I just recieved the amp and only have played it for ONE gig and several hours of practice. It's everything advertised.
To get the same amp that is probably made in the same factory in China, only with a NAME, you get to pay 3x more, Why ?

I like this amp. I like it a lot. But there's no reason to purchase this. Even if you're poor, you'll find yourself frustrated, without options for repair. I purchased mine a year ago and out of the box, it had a very serious issue that no one to date has been able to diagnose. The amp will perform absolutely perfect, deliver stunning tones, and massive power... But then out of no where it cuts out, and you could go from having it on five, to having it on five with it sounding like one. It also crackles, and it blew my tweeter with this. The only method I have found to correct this problem, is to turn the amp up to 8 or so, hit your bass just about as hard as you can, and then it'll blow your face off and roar back to life. This of course makes the amp totally impractical for playing on the road, or at any concert. I've gone through the headaches of dealing with it, and now after a year and a half of dealing with this problem, I wish I had just plunged into a better product. Another serious problem is that since no one has been able to diagnose this problem, no one is willing to cover it under warranty. So I'm stuck with this garbage. At least it scares the neighbors though.... When it works.

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

The first Bugera BVP5500 you sent me would not start. It kept blowing fuses!
I figure that it must have been damaged during shipment. I called you about this
problem and you were very helpful and courteous and replaced the unit with
another one that worked just fine! I was looking for a tube amp that didn't cost
a small fortune, and this one works well. The sound of my stand-up double-bass fiddle
when amplified now sounds like it should and fits very well with the other acoustic
instruments in our group. The old Peavey bass amp I was using is now a spare.

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

Head arrived DOA: MF sent out a next day air delivery replacement before I could box the dead unit and get it sent out. Excellent customer service by anyone's definition!
The head is an inexpensive option to come close to the Ampeg tones without spending an arm and leg. I have had this amp for almost four years and still finding tonal colors never discovered before; started a log sheet for tonal/color combinations. I am driving a vintage Peavy 4x10 8 ohm cab and have MORE than enough head room for either jam sessions or playing out small venues.
The only modification that I could not resist was to change the "stock" pre-amp tubes. I replaced the Bugera 12AX7s with NOS Mullard 12AX7 tubes. As the stock set up was great sounding, the added color of improved tubes in the pre-amp section made the head come truly alive; small furry creatures within 50 yards beware!

Bottom line: Excellent head unit for even twice the money and Musician's Friend's customer service can not be beat by anyone!

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

I received my BVP5500 yesterday and after dinner I set it up with my new Bugera BN115TS speaker cabinet, which is a beast itself. The amp came out of the box exhuding quality. The knobs move firmly and deliberate, and are very solid. The amp is heavy and very well built. The faceplate is a high quality brushed satin finish that displays the name brand in black chrome.

Examining the backside, there are so many output variations available, which adds to the amp's versatility. A footswitch controls mute and the EQ. I use the speakon connectors as they are foolproof.

Firing up the amp, I noticed the soft orange glow of the four 12AX7 tubes through a heat grill on the top of the amp. Nice! I plugged in my Ibanez SR500 and started experimenting.

First I set all tone controls at 12:00 o'clock and left the EQ off. I set the tube drive at 2:00. The pre is set at 2:00 and when I started turning the master volume past 3 it started to rumble. I was in my house and could hear walls and windows rattling. The amp really came alive when I kicked in the EQ. I like straight ahead tube grind and this amp sure delivered! I then turned up the first 3 Low EQ sliders and the Master EQ level two notches. Now we're really shaking the windows! The amp produced such a deep, musical sustained sound and pushed out so much volume efortlessly. I can tell this amp and cab will have no problem in most any venue.

There are so many tonal variations on the amp, I didn't have time to try them all out. Suffice to say there are enough controls for you to find your own sound.

This amp is powerful, nice looking, and versatile. I want to add another 15" cabinet to have the full 550 watts available for outdoor shows or auditoriums. However, don't get me wrong, just one Bugera cabinet will be sufficient for 95% of your gigs.

More and more people are realizing the value of this company of products and I believe you will see them populating many more stages. Compare this amp quality to similar brands costing three times as much.

Try this amp out for 30 days and let it's reliable performance and your ears prove to you what an excellent value it is. I'm glad I bought this amp--it's portable enough for small gigs yet powerful enough to use in auditoriums and outdoor concerts with an added cabinet. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

This amp has been with me for a good 4 years now. It always gives me a great tone and has not failed me yet. It gives me more options than I hope to use, and sounds better than some of the Ampeg amps it tries to copy. I never needed to change out the tubes but I'm about to see if that will make a difference in tone.

Even though its a great amp it still has its issues. One time I was carrying it by one of the handles and the screw used to hold one of the ends unscrewed itself completely. If the other screw didnt hold I would have dropped it. Also, my mute button is currently pushed in and I havent had time to bring the amp home to repair it. I'm currently unsure as if the button is just stuck (most likely) or broken inside.

          Same Problem as Previous Reviewer

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

Same problem as reported by Captain in BC on 11/18/2013. This amp was advertised at Musician's Friend as used. I understand that. I went ahead and purchased the unit on April 1 2013.

This amp has been used literally no more than 6 hours total in all that time just in my home for personal use and recording, never at any kind of gig. Now when I plug in my guitar, there is the same clicking sound as Captain reports and the sound fades in and out.

I find that the power amp section does work when I plug in an external preamp to the return jack of the effects loop.

I have not yet followed up with Musicians Friend to see if they will stand behind the products they sell. But a complete failure of the pre amp section after 6 hours of use in a home environment, not even a gig is unacceptable.

The only positive thing I can say is that bypassing the preamp section of the amp at least lets me use the power amp output of the unit. The rules of this board prevent me from quoting what I paid. I will just say that I am glad I did not pay even the advertised discounted price. I suppose for the money, a dedicated power amp is better than nothing, and nothing is what you will get from this amp if your experience is anything like mine. Looks like I will be shopping for a real amp with my tax refund. For the sake of comparison, I have an old Carvin guitar amp from the X Amp series which I bought in 1984. Other than replacing the tubes, I have done no repairs on it and it has performed flawlessly. I have learned my lesson. My replacement for this Bugera travesty will be a Carvin.

And to whomever makes the decisions about what products Musicians Friend will carry, you should really consider whether this white elephant is something you want to continue carrying.

After 44 years of playing just about everything out there, this amp is a super bargain. Competes with amps in the high end range. Using it with an Ampeg Vintage Reissue 810 cabinet. It's difficult to keep the volume down in the P&W band I play in currently. Pre at 12 master at 9. Using a MB Compressore and the graphic EQ. Leaving the controls mostly flat on my basses. Awesome sound from the amp and direct line out. Quiet as a mouse with a good bass and electronics. Purchased road case to keep the controls from getting bashed.

I bought one and used it for 10 gigs I was happy with the sound. It does clip easily if you are not careful with the input signal level. After 88 days of ownership the cooling fan started clicking and rattling. Bugera wants me to ship it back to them at my cost to have the fan replaced. It is very heavy and the shipping costs more than replacing the cheap fan with a better one myself. They said I can do it myself and gave me a number to parts to get another fan (like this one), but it will void my warranty. I have to use this amp to play gigs and can fix it quickly so I ordered a new good one from a good cooling fan company and took the other out. Sure enough the fan in it is wobbling and worn out already! The replacement was about the cost of a case of cheap beer. I will use it but would not recommend buying Bugera as 2 people in my band have had quality issues with their gear. Buy the extended warranty through your retailer if you buy Bugera. They are not customer oriented.

Comments about Bugera BVP5500 550W Tube Bass Amplifier Head:

I really like this amp - plenty of punch. There are tons of options for connecting to DI, pre-amp out, power amp in, fx loop. I played it last night for about 4 hours and it ran flawlessly. The only thing is the manual is really a 2 page quick start guide. It basically gives the run-down on now to use the controls but you'll have to experiment a lot to learn how to use them. I found the Gain control is very touchy. If i had it on 5 it was too low and didn't give enough punch but at 6 it started "Farting" out. I had to get it somewhere in between. The quick start guide shows you need to get the clip light to just occasionally light up when a strong note is hit but NOT have it stay on. That's easier said than done. I found I had to set it a bit lower after getting that setting (lighting sometimes) otherwise my low E notes would make the amp clip and start "Farting". Also, the Valve Gain for the pre-amp tubes is not very useful in the lower settings below halfway and kind of sucks the life out of the tone - however, that can be compensated for in the 10 band EQ section. I think you can get a decent solid state amp sound that way but it's not for me. I love the SVT sound so I stay mostly in the 8-10 area. This is a decent HYBRID (tube pre-amp, solid state power amp) - tons of sound shaping controls, lots of output options and a decent amount of power (550 Watts peak/300 Watts RMS into 4 ohms). That 550 Watts peak seems a bit misleading but it really does sound LOUD and being driven by 4 tubes in the pre-amp it really can get very loud and punchy. I'm driving a Hartke 4x10 and a Behringer 1x15 w/aluminum cones. This amp could easily drive an 8x10. I wouldn't put this on any cab combo that had less than 600 watts of handling capability. So far i'm liking it and I hope it holds up. I think if it's used correctly and not abused and you learn how to use the controls it should be a keeper.
