I don't often rave about gear, as I'm VERY picky. But reading all the reviews about this pedal made me very curious. I've been thinking about buying a Marshall amp recently just because I occasionally love to get a little Billy Gibbons crunch on some tunes. I already own a Carl Martin compressor/limiter, and have been VERY happy with that too, so I was very excited and curious when I received the Plexitone. I'm happy to report that it lives up to its promises. This thing really delivers. Most overdrive pedals add a lot of noise, which is highly disturbing to me. This one doesn't! I can dial in a pretty damn hardcore high-gain tone without significant humming or noise. As most other reviews have already stated, you can go from subtle overdrive to serious crunch with this, and it doesn't really color the amp sound which is essential to me. I'm playing a party gig tomorrow, and can't wait to fire this thing up. The other thing is that it sounds pretty damn good even at low volume. As far as the price tag, you get what you pay for, and this thing oozes quality and looks like it's built very well. My only minor gripe with this is that as many other Carl Martin pedals, it has a built-in power supply. If you're a touring musician traveling outside of the US, you'd have to bring a converter to use it. For this, I'm rating it 4.5 instead of 5 for features. Other than that, this is a great pedal!

Nicely made pedal. I like the three stages of crunch/high gain/boost. Problem to me is there is only one tone control. To get the pedal to sound good, the basic amp tone has to be "middy" and dull sounding with rolled off highs.

I can definitely hear the cranked plexi sound in this pedal, but I just couldn't get the highs and mids to sound right. I have a few Barber Pedals that can achieve this tone when stacked. Didn;t make sense to keep it for the what it cost. Returned it quickly.

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I love my Plexitone and play through a Fender Blues Junior. My favorite settings are: setting gain 1 on about 8:00 for a great clean plexi sound, or setting gain 1 on about 8:00 and gain 2 on 10:30 for outstanding ACDC tones. You can also crank it up for more gain then most Fender amp players are ever going to need. The boost channel is also very useful for evening out levels.

Carl Martin PlextiTone

By JVick

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Overall, nothing else to say but "I'm bummed it didn't work out!"
I researched this pedal and was sure it was the one for me. I loved the idea of two drives AND a boost all in one unit. When it arrived I was excited to plug it in. But once plugged into my 1976 Fender Deluxe Reverb, it sounded like a chainsaw! I could not get any decent sounds out it no matter the settings -very brittle and harsh. I will say, however, that the boost did work as advertised. I was very disappointed. The search is still on! For now, I will keep my Mosferatu and Fulltone Distortion Pro!
The build quality appears to be top notch. Very sturdy unit.
Very pricey unit, that alone convinced me to buy it thinking it was going to be a solid drive.

Replaced 3 pedals with this one

By MongMong

from Seattle

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

I A/B'd this with a Tube Screamer TS808 reissue. The results were CLEAR, as in this thing made the TS808 sound muddy and limited (read MORE headroom). I then A/B'd it with a Mesa Bottle Rocket Tube overdrive pedal. This was closer but I decided that this thing was more lush and smooth whereas the Mesa was more gritty and teethy. The boost function allowed me to replace another pedal as well. In the end I came out with a better array sounds and it paid for itself and then some by way of replacing pedals.

A KEEPER!!

By Kairos_cr

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Well it's been a while since I started looking for a pedal that could do what the plexitone does!I own a '65 Fender Twin Reverb (a beautiful clean amp) since I am a hobbyist and play only in small/medium gigs, I did'nt want to buy a marshall head in order to get a good distortion.went thru some boss' pedals, marshall's..mxr's even thru other cool pedals as fulltone's. But I have to tell you...never before my twin sounded as it does now, when I plug my les paul and run it thru the plexitone. It gives you the chance of having 2 different channels in order to get 2 different distortions! The tone knob REALLY gives u TONE CONTROL, and the boost is awesome, you can use it to boost this pedal or others in your effect chain.Hands down...a pedal that will never go off my pedalboard, a distortion that can make a fender amp like a plexi W/halfstack.I really recommend it!

C.M. Plexitone

By ToneHunter423

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

Okay there is a sound we all here in our heads when we're not chunkin some ultra high gain power chords or playin some soft blues on a dinky ts9 or BB Preamp...ITS THAT IN BETWEEN sweet harmonic sound that everytime you plug in it sounds like you just put ON a fresh set of strings on...Well thats where the plexitone takes the cake..I've heard "its only for humbuckers"..BUT thats not entirely true (it loves my american strats plugged into my hotrod deville 2X12)...this pedal is able to take you anywhere from **testify by SRV all the way to Angus & Malcom with a touch of Audioslave.. and the built in power supply is a nice touch also. When I first fired it up, all the knobs were set at noon and I instantly knew it would only take seconds to dial in an ABOVE average sound. A tube amp is probably reccomended but I'm nowhere near an expert, but my tone search is over...YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

Real British Tone and Feel

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This is a little monster! The tones and "feel" are just like my old Marshall that was hot-rodded by Jose. It sounds like a stack, but won't break your back. Delicious, nutritious and sooo good for you!

Very nice plexi amp tone

By snide

from Alabama

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal will make you want to play for hours on end. I use mine with a JCM-800 amp through the low input. As for guitars, the best sound I have found is my Les Paul with Burstbucker pups. I also use a fat strat equipped with a TB-11 custom custom. I run the gains on both pedal channels at about 9 o'clock and the tone at 12 o'clock, then I set the amps EQ to my liking. This pedal gets only 1 tone but what a tone it is. It's thick and has that mid quality that plexi guys are always seeking. There is quite alot of gain on tap and note seperation is always there, amazing! Throw all of your other distortion gizmos away and make room for this. It doesn't work too well with single coils in my opionion however.

Good Pedal ... If You Have Humbuckers

By Tim-FT5Vp

from Houston, TX

Comments about Carl Martin Plexitone Overdrive Pedal:

The pedal gave me what I wanted. I have basically all fender tube amps (Blues Jr, '65 Twin Re-Issue) and wanted an overdrive/distortion that would give me somewhat of a Marshall sound. The pedal gives me the sound I wanted through the crunch channel and the high gain channel. There are some things I noticed: (1) It will sound very sharp if you dial the tone above 12 o'clock. I keep mine about 10 o'clock (about a 3 or 4 if there were numbers on the dial) with no problem; (2) The boost gives you a HUGE jump in volume, therefore you only need to set that dial to a little above the zeroed point; (3) It sounds best with hum bucking pickups if you're using Fender style amps; the Nashville Tele didn't quite get a good sound through my Blues Jr. or Twin. And this pedal. Best sound I was able to get with this pedal with a Tele which had a Seymour Duncan Li'l 59 in the bridge or my Les Paul Custom.
