I have been playing Crates for years and just plugged into one of these at the local music center. This is probably one of the best sounding Crates on the market. You will definately get your biggest bang for the buck with this amp. I played a Fender Telecaster Nashville Deluxe with the dual TexMex pickups and this thing sounded terrific on any setting. Based on my luck with Crate and longevity of quality, I would have no problem recommending this amp to any player at any level.

I've been using the same Crate 100w combo amp for almost 10 years and it still works fine. They last a really long time if you take good care of them. Crate aren't the best amps, but for the price they can't be beat. I just got this GTD120 and I'm very impressed with the tone compared to my old GXT100. I loved the spring reverb in my old amp and i'm disapointed with the DSP effects in the new one. I probably won't use the DSP effects at all because they add noise, don't sound great to begin with, plus for some reason they sound weak when you use them with the footswitch which makes no sense to me. The gain channels sound awesome at low levels, but at high volume there is massive feedback. However, I use effects pedals for my distortion and chorus. I'll just have to get a reverb or delay pedal. Playing my Schecter Damien through a Digitech Metal Master in the GTD120 clean channel sounds better than I could have ever hoped for! Clean, clear, and a rumbling low end. So if you're looking for a good, inexpensive clean amp for small gigs and practice and want to use external effects then you can't go wrong with this amp!

DSP Static Noise

By SJB

See all my reviews

I have owned this amp for five months and have had to exchange it twice through the Crate 5-year warranty. The DSP creates a static noise when engaged. You cannot play without hearing the static, which is very audible at all levels. Also, the "always on" tuner creates a popping noise while playing (hard to hear but it is there). After two exchanges and the same problem with each amp, Crate swapped me an amp that does not have DSP. Although the Crate tech support staff was incredibly helpful and accomodating, avoid this amp.

It's ok to say the most.

The other guiatest in my old band had one of these. If ur just starting out it a good amp expecally for the price but, you could also buy a spider 3 combo amp 4 the same. The best part of this amp is how loud it is. The distortain isn't that great and the effects suck. If ur lookin for a amp to start out with, I'd go with a spider3. The only down fall with getting a spider 3 is that it's not as loud.p.s: Crates r so cheap because there made cheaply. And sorry for any spelling errors.

Great amp if your on a budget

I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. After going through several stages in musicianship i have also undergone many equipment changes. I now play much lower volume inprovisational music and this amp suits me perfectly. no its not tube... no it doesnt have the sweetest tone on the market, but its 200 bucks. If you play softer music and use effects, this amp should work out just fine. I was tired of hauling around half stacks and other huge equipment but now i have something with plenty of power and doesnt take 20 minutes to unload into the venue and at practice. i give this amp a great review based on price, because i am far from rich. if you got the money, buy some better stuff... if not, then go with this.

Do not buy this amp!!!!! I just got it yesterday and it is horrible. I dont really know how it sounds because of all the buzzing. when you turn on the chorus the static gets really bad. I have had several crate amps in the past and loved the way my les paul sounds through them. Maybe I just got a bad one this time.

not so hot

This amp can not be turn up loud. It screams at you the whole time when its in the distortion channel. I hate it its really anoyying. The other guitarist in my band bought one, and it when it's turn up it gives feedback. i wouldnt recomend this amp to any one. If you wanted it for a starter amp get a smaller one so you dont waste money.

Great Deal

I just purchased this amp recently and I am very impressed with it's quality, power, and sound. This is not my first Crate. I have a Crate C40 which is now 15 years old. I also own a Marshall 250DFX and a small Fender Frontman 25. I am very pleased with this purchase and I am sure I will get many years of use out of it. The only issue I have with the Crate GTD 120 is the effects channel makes noise. Not a buz but some type of slight hum. For the price of this amp, it is certainly a great deal.

Loud 'N' Proud

This GTD120 is pretty darn loud, and with my Korg AX5G, I've got one Mother of an amp! But with that said, The Digi effects are just ok. They work but anything more than "just on" with each effect sounds a bit over the top. The reverb is better than the rest. Now for the bad. I have experienced a loud popping. This is caused by the digi effect control knob which is flawed by design in my opinion. The knob is smooth just like any volume or tone knob, it should be notched and or click into each setting. What I mean is by not having a defined clearance between the flange and delay spectrum's it will make really loud pops. I don't know if it's just my amp or what? But that is something easily overcome by dialing a hair farther. just don't dial it there! As for the High Gain 3rd channel, I'm guessing this was designed for low volume bedroom practice or something. It sounds killer until you crank it up. FEEEEEEEEDBACK! past 4 which is way loud! but you can get the same tone from the overdrive channel at loud levels where as at low volume the overdrive is lacking. All in all, for the money You will not find a louder amp that comes with a 5 year transferable warranty with 2 years on the speakers.

do NOT buy this

I don't typically like to write bad reviews, but this needs to be said: this amp is horrendous. I bought one recently and returned it within a few days. The features are neat and if properly executed, they'd be great. Here's the problem: on low volume, this amp sounds ok. Push it more than so up to 4 or 5 and it's a noise box. It only took one rehearsal for me to realize that this amp is just plain awful. It sounded terrible. If you must check this one out, try it out in person and push the volume. You'll see immediately that it's garbage.
