So rich in tone you can almost taste it.

Finicky about tone? Then look no further because Danelectro has got you covered. The Danelectro CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive effects pedal from the Cool Cat series shines with all the classy crunch that you've come to expect from an authority on cool sound and stylish tone.

The Transparent Overdrive lets more of your guitar's voice shine through, even at high overdrive settings. It's a very useful effect pedal for everything from modern Country to American and British Rock.

The gain sets the amount of overdrive applied to the signal, counterclockwise is minimum overdrive, turn clockwise to increase overdrive. As overdrive increases, low frequencies will "bloom" slightly.

The treble and bass controls on this Danelectro Cool Cat Pedal adjust the tone of the overdrive sound. The two controls are stacked; the inner control is for Treble, the outer for Bass. The volume control adjusts overall volume when the Transparent Overdrive is turned on. Usually, the Volume control is set to be a little louder than the bypassed signal, or loud enough to serve as a solo setting. There is lots of volume boost available, so you can get even low gain settings loud enough. With high gain settings, the Volume control adds another dimension of gain that will generate even more overdrive. Be careful—this guitar pedal goes way beyond eleven! The true bypass footswitch engages and disengages the pedal.

I did a side-by-side with V1 and V2 through my Acoustic B20 bass amp, run clean so I could hear a full freq range without tonal coloration by the amp. NOTE: these pedals will sound better with a tube amp, but my bass amp was a better way to hear precisely what the pedals themselves sound like.

V1 was a low-gain OD pedal. Slighty gritty, slightly warm, but mostly it altered the tonal characater. In a very good way. I used my V1 like a low-gain overdrive for americana dirt sounds, or I used it at the end of my chain to get back a bit of sparkle lost when other pedals are in use that rob me of top end clarity, and to add some grit back into a smoooooth tone. I say USED because I'll now use the V2 for that purpose.

V2 is much more of a clean boost and really doesn't change the character of your guitar much at all, especially if all the internal switches are set to off. Those switches engage LED and JFET clipping (which is a very common way to get OD in pedals).

They change the character but not drastically. The JFET switch changes the character more than the LED's do. These switches may be more useful when the pedals are in a chain with other ODs.

The 6db boost switch is just that. Pumps more output - and likely a bit more top end, too, given the way resistors that limit volume also have an affect on the high freqs. But I didn't notice any real change in tone, to be honest, just volume.

All in all, this is a great pedal, and really reminds me of a Timmy even MORE than the V1 did. Timmy was built to drive the front end of tube amps by adding a bit of solid state crispiness to the tone, to bring out clarity and fine tune the character. This V2 is useful for the exact same thing. Much more so than the V1 actually.

Odd that the V2 does and even better job at ripping off Paul Cochrane's Timmy pedal, but hey, it's a gateway pedal. I got the V1 and then got a Tim. Now I can leave my Tim in the studio and have a road-worthy CTO-2 for my gigging pedal board. AND I can dedicate my V1 to being a low-gain OD pedal in my chain as well. BOTH are very useful in their own way.

This is a great pedal, very versatile in tone & goes from a clean boost to sizzling distortion

My concern is with the quality, it is not useable with the hum, I hope that I just got a bad one. I have several other Danelectro pedals that work well. This is a great buy if the quality issue is resolved.

With the hum the pedal is not useable on stage or in recording.
Pedal developed a loud hum 2 weeks after arriving, sent back to MF wainting for replacement.

Up to that point it was great. Very versatile. It goes from clean boost to sizzling distortion.

Tone controls really work well, the stacked tone knob is a bit awkward & it is easy to bump the volume knob when adjusting the tone control
Had to be returned after 2 weeks due to loud hum, waiting for a replacement
For the price it is a bargain

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

Great sound for the money, but when I used it every week the footswitch quit after about a year and a half. If you are only going to use it occasionally, it's worth the money. Forget it if you want to change settings during a gig though. The controls are awkward to use when you have plenty of time. Impossible between songs.

      Useful product, flawed

      By Jammer 123

      from Tennessee

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal will give you a lot of low-noise volume boost, colored by the treble & bass controls. Can be used as a clean preamp for any genre. Works well for any type of input, even acoustic guitar. As you turn the gain up from say half to full, it adds a slight amount of distortion. So, you can set it to be on the threshold of clean/distortion, something hardly any other pedal will do. That's useful to a bebop or maybe rockabilly guitarist who wants the sound to be clean but just at or below the edge of distortion. Unfortunately, the designers opted for form over function, and the knobs are ungigworthy. They seem to be "backwards", and the concentric treble/bass stack is VERY hard to set. No markings. You need a little flashlight and some patience to set this bugger.

      Works as advertised

      By Jerry Mathers

      from San Diego, CA

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

Overdrive that actually complements a cranked tube amp. Dirt cheap. Seems built to last.
2 band eq, level, gain. Inside, there are 10 fine-tuning switches I haven't played with much. I switched it to the "rockin' hick music" setting or whatever it's called in the manual, then left it alone. I guess this box has something for tweakers as well as players who are content to set and forget. The knob position bugs some people; I'm really liking it, because they're difficut to accidentally change while playing.
Physically, it's pretty tough. Metal casing, hefty on-off switch, etc. Most importantly, I have to admit it really is "transparent." Usually when I hear an audio freak of any ilk say this word, I start thinking 'snake oil." But in truth, this pedal just takes your clean sound, makes it louder, and adds some dirt. I play a DRRI, and to date, it hates every dirt pedal I put in front of it except this one. It excels at making the amp sound like it's about four notches louder than it really is, resulting in overdriven tones that can go from Howlin' Wolf to Neil Young/Crazy Horse. Really lovely for a guitarist who's well out of their "playing Teen Spirit in the garage" phase, yet nowhere near their "noodly bland Weather Channel music" phase (I'm hoping to kick off this mortal coil before that point).
God bless the garage-tinkering boutiqe pedal makers, but I don't have that kind of cash at this point. For now, this pedal is an outstanding value.

      Awesome pedal!

      By Wryan Doyle

      from Kingston, ON, Canada.

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is just awesome. It's got Volume, Treble AND Bass controls, instead of just one "tone" control, and a gain control. There are voicing switches inside the battery compartment - I have them all switched to "on" and I think it's awesome. When Danelectro says "transparent," they MEAN it. This pedal doesn't change the character of my JCM800 at all, just adds gain/volume, depending on my settings. I'm not sure if I can really tell for sure if it's really "true bypass," but my amp still sounds amazing when it's off, and amazing when it's on, so I think it's close, at least. The heavy metal casing is awesome, and the tone is just amazing. Buy this pedal!

      Lotta bang for the buck

      By Ron-3zSuI

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had the pedal on my board for about a year and I leave it on ALL the time, even for ballads. I use the volume, not the drive control, to overdrive subsequent pedals with only a hint of drive, treble slightly boosted and the bass flat. Using PAF pickups (Les Paul) I get a slight edge similar to cranking a good quality, low wattage tube amp up to get all the 'clean' gain possible to the point that its on the edge of distortion. The sounds are clear (transparent), articulate, and unmistakably tubular and smooth. When I kick in my Drive pedal, I get distortion similar to a Marshall Plexi cranked - crunchy but still articulate, not muddy. I plan on keeping this pedal on my board indefinitely. Been playing for 40 years plus, so I'm familiar with what a Plexi can do, as well as AC30s, Twins Tweeds, Mesa, DrZ, you name it - I've had 'em all. Used right, this pedal kicks. Used as a stand-alone distortion pedal its just so-so. Use it as a clean boost and you'll love it.

      It's ok, not true bypass

      By Anonymous

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had this pedal in my collection for about a year now and I am finally getting around to checking it out. Physically, the thing is built like a tank and is pretty heavy. The nobs are in a terrible location and there difficult to adjust being stacked. The pedal claims being true bypass but I dont buy it. There is a noticeable difference in tone when its in the loop, as with most pedals. The mids and highs are muffled and it steals the "pop" from the tubes. When its on, it can be a great pedal. I set the overdrive very low, just to add a little boost to my amps overdrive. Alone the overdrive is nice, nothing spectacular but its suppose to be transparent so I guess its doing what its suppose to do. I'm not sure if i'm going to keep it yet, I'll look online to see what kind of mods can be done to really make it a true bypass.

      Disappointing...

      By MrMikers

      from Phoenix

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I ordered this pedal because I wanted a low-gain overdrive that didn't have the midrange boost and bass loss that most overdrives have. Also because the word is that this pedal sounds alot like a much more expensive "boutique" pedal. Well, all I can say is that the sound of this pedal was a major disappointment. Yes, this pedal can be transparent if you set the tone right, but the character of the overdrive is just plain ugly and unmusical. It reminded me of a cheap solid-state amp with the input being overdriven, just not pleasing at all. Seriously, if you are looking for a good, inexpensive overdrive, there are much better options out there.

      Great Sound!

Comments about Danelectro Cool Cat CTO-2 Transparent Overdrive V2 Guitar Effects Pedal:

Just played my first gig using this pedal and was extremely happy with the results. Using this pedal after my Wampler OD as a volume/gain boost during solos and it performed beautifully with no muddiness, the notes projecting clearly and my tone not altered. Of course the ganged Treble/Bass knob is a pain to adjust, but once it is set, the sound is fabulous.
