I own both the Paul Cochrane Timmy pedal, and the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive pedal. I actually purchased the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive pedal just to check out what the all controversy was about between these two pedals. They are both extremely similar in tone, and what they accomplish. Even though I own all high end gear for the rock genre, I actually prefer the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive pedal as my personal favorite overdrive pedal that doesn't color your guitars' natural tone.

I tried this pedal with both my Blackheart Little Giant and Killer Ant. Both have Sovtek power tubes and JJ pre-amp tubes for higher volume break up. While it sounds better than some other Tube Screamer-like clones that I've played (Behringer, Bad Monkey), the CTO still has that Tube screamer mid-range boost that you either like or don't like. My mid-1980's RAT with the clipped mod sounds much more transparent than this at low gain settings. Plus, the RAT doubles as a distortion box as well. And for a 5w class A amp, I really prefer turning the amp up a bit more and backing off on the guitar volume. To my ears, that sounds better than boosting the signal with an OD. I wanted to like this pedal, but it ended up going back.

A clone, but a good one

By Anonymous

So this pedal was determined to be an almost exact clone of the Paul Cochrane Timmy pedal, which is an amazing pedal in its own right. This one just about nails it. The quality of the Timmy isn't there, as this is a cheaper knockoff but the sound is great. I use it to drive my HotRod Deluxe with a PRS SC245, and also a Telecaster and sounds great with both. Only complaint is the position of the controls right near all the input/output jacks, but re-housing the pedal solved that. Great buy for the money!!

That cat is cool indeed...

I bought that pedal without trying it first (took a chance on the good reviews)and WOW! Really puts some big name companies to shame...and before you shell out the dough for BOUTIQUE stuff you may want to check that one out first, it is THAT good. Great for blues and rock. Hard to believe how much you get for $. Good job Danelectro.

Cool Little Pedal!!

I have had this pedal for a few days and I love it!! It takes your guitar sound and breathes life into it. I run it through a zombie pedal into an Epi junior combo, it just screams!!! Check this out if you want to boost your tired tube sound.

Awesome Pedal

By GuyWithAStrat09

I know that if you are a decent guitar player who hears and understand what decent tone is, you probably wouldn't think anything of danelectro pedals let alone this particular one. However, I have been playing guitar for a while and this pedal is absolutely amazing. It sounds better than my Tube Screamer and better than my Visual Sound Jekkyl & Hyde. Get this pedal! Why not?

This is an awesome transparent overdrive pedal!

By Anonymous

This is an awesome transparent overdrive pedal! It does exactly what it says in that it provides a very cool overdrive sound without sacrificing the tone of your guitar. I play Gibson Les Pauls in various rock contexts, and this pedal is second to none. Of course it's great having true bypass, metal casings and jacks, which are all necessary pro features. I also like how the control nobs are not in the way of your feet in live applications. All this at a nice low price.

10 times the pedal for the money!!!!

By monchichi

I was completely skeptical. Most of Dano's stuff is very cheaply made but sounds decent. This is a different animal. Fabulous OD pedal!! I can't say enough. I prefer it to anything I've heard out there. I'm not going to get rid of my Fulltone OCD or my HAO Rust Driver just yet, but lately I've been going for the Dano more and more often. The added bonus is that it is built like a tank! Very nice heavy construction. My only complaint is the stomp switch on top. You have to get used to hitting it just right or you'll miss engaging the switch.Love this pedal!!!

This pedal is fantastic. Also, it costs 1/4 the price of the competition. Buy it if you want to kick your tube amp up into glorious overdrive.

almost criminal!

By Zen

from Texas

This pedal has a terrific, transparent sound. So if you have a cheap guitar and cheap amp, it may not be for you. The TOD can be set up to sound like a variety of pedals, from the TS series to high dollar boutiques like the "Timmy"! The stacked tone knobs are a little tough to set on the fly, but the boost potential is unbelievable. It is almost criminal that you can get this tone for this price! They should have called this pedal the "Transparent Conscious", since Danelectro is practically giving boutique tone away! Why would anyone buy a high priced boutique pedal? It really does sound like they just re-boxed a "Timmy" and are selling it for next to nothing!
