OVERVIEW

Coveted overdrive sounds in a fab little pedal.

Danelectro puts the D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal in your hands without wiping out your financial portfolio. History was made in 1975 when a mom-and-pop store in California commissioned the production of just 200 of what is perhaps the best guitar overdrive effect ever. Unlike any other effects unit, that pedal authentically simulated the breakup that occurs when a tube amp is run at full volume. You will occasionally see an original in the stage rig of a major artist. IF you could find an original offered for sale, you should probably sit down before inquiring about the price . . . The Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive pedal features Level, Tone, and O.D. controls.

FEATURES
  • Realistic tube overdrive

A lot of the music I play is 70's classic hard rock. As I've developed as a guitar player I've realized that using straight ahead distortion is the wrong sound for certain songs. I realized that what I needed to add to my arsenal was a nice overdrive sound that gave me some breakup and boost but without crossing the line into distortion territory. Since I already own two Danelectro pedals (the FAB Distortion and FAB Chorus-both of which are awesome pedals, BTW) I decided I would buy the FAB Overdrive. This pedal was exactly what I was looking for. This pedal gave me some great classic rock tones when used with my Epiphone G-400 and Epiphone Les Paul Special I. (This pedal along with the P-90's in my Les Paul are an especially tasty combo!) All of the Danelectro FAB pedals are made of a tough plastic which I have found to be very durable. I see no need to jump down on and try to smash my pedals when I hit the footswitch as some other people must do, so I have never had a problem with the shells of these pedals breaking or cracking. I also like the bright LED lights on the Danelectro pedals. They leave no question as to whether or not the pedal is on. All in all I highly recommend this pedal if you are looking for a nice overdriven classic rock sound. For that matter, I recommend all of the Danelectro FAB pedals. They sound great and are affordable to boot. What more could you ask for?

I bought this wanting to use it primarily as a boost pedal. I thought I could play soft rhythm, then kick on the overdrive with a little distortion for the solo. The pedal sounds good, but doesn't meet my needs because I can't get the volume cranked up loud enough to make a difference. I haven't messed around with it enough and it may be my amp, but so far it is not meeting my needs. But it looks cool, was cheap and it sounds OK.

Sounds broken (in a good way)

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this mostly to use an overdrive pedal for my harmonica mic, but it works well with a guitar (and it should, considering it's a guitar pedal). With the harmonica, it adds a great dirty sound to wail the blues with (especially good for CCR's "Run Through the Jungle" type sound). With the guitar, it really does add a sharp, piercing overdrive with the right amount of breakup. With OD, some people definitely prefer it to sound like they have a broken amp (and I'm one of them). On the low end, it doesn't really have a use apart from boosting volume. It sounds best when cranked up.The plastic housing isn't the strongest, so don't go crazy and stomp on it, but it's otherwise pretty sturdy. Oh, and don't let the battery get too low or you'll get an earful of feedback (ouch!). Just invest in an AC adapter. For the low-end price bracket, you couldn't do much better.

One Year Later :~)

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is by far the very best OD pedal I've ever used - but only with tube amps.

With Solid State Amps - not so good - Noisy, Hissy, Crackly... (not the pedal's fault, as I am of the opinion that Danelectro may have made the D-2 FAB pedal specifically for/to drive tubes).

But pushing "Tubes?" - Ooooohhhhhh yeah...!

BTW - Was thinking of swapping out the pups on 2 of my guitars before getting this pedal in order to get a hotter tone/sound. But with this little baby, that is no longer necessary I am very happy to say :~)
Exactly what it should have, which is exactly what I needed, delivering it all in supreme style.

Feel free to call it a "Steal of the Century" at this price.
Not made of metal, but the plastic is stout and sturdy, the controls taut, but fluid.

I hope for it to one day to be made of metal so I can get a couple more if so (they are definite keepers).
I use this pedal on my Carvin MTS-3200 100W Tube Head loaded with JJ ECC83's / E34L's. Not only does it push these tubes terrifically, but with zero noise and mud, with absolute, stellar clarity, no matter the settings.

How great is that...?

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This OD pedal is very versatile. If you want to add just a little boost and tube-like breakup on blues solos, it's in there. Or if you prefer a more over-the-top, hard edged, thick 70's kind of tone, that's easily dialed in too. I recommend you place it in the beginning of your effects path, but after your wah pedal. You will be amazed at how responsive this pedal is and how nice the two effects sound together. I use a Snark power supply for my pedal board, so noise or hum has never been a problem. Bottom line, you can spend a lot more money on an OD pedal, but why would or should you??? It's reliable, durable and most importantly it sounds great. And at this price anyone can afford it... It's a "no brainer", Buy it, you won't be sorry.
I have been playing professionally for over 35 years.

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Playing live is where the rubber meets the road with mass produced gear. Got huge response to the tone of this little guy! Added nice, rounded, bell-like tone to a Texas Special loaded Strat played through a small tube amp. Quiet too! Concerns about durability of on-off switch don't apply, as I set this on the amp and leave it on all the time. Huge bang for the buck!

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Have had this for 2 years now and could have asked for more out of it. It's got a great mellow, vintage sound and gives a lot of punch on the bottom end, the kind you can kind of feel in your chest. For the price you can't beat it. Just order the distortion pedal to add a little variety. My only suggestion, and it takes a little extra effort, but take the battery out when you aren't using it, these little babies will eat them up, especially if you leave the cables plugged in. And if you play out, I recommend having a fresh battery for every show, and then use that one for practices until the next gig. Or get yourself an adapter. That's really the only flaw I have found, especially for the price.

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is perfect for someone like me, a budget conscious strong hobbyist that does not make money by playing the guitar. This pedal puts really nice overdrive that has put a whole other level of tone on my amp. Can't use pedals for solid state amps with distortion channels? I put this pedal in front of my Marshall MG 30fx and it makes all four of the preset channels sound freakin' awesome. Thanks to these fab pedals, I can justify buying them and still save for my kids' colleges.

Comments about Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This was purchased to use inline with my Ibanez Gio 6 string bass. While it is designed for standard guitar, the pedal produces the desired effects that I was looking for, even in the lower range. I was pleasantly surprised with how well it performed. The level knob is a little more touchy than I would like, but it's an inexpensive pedal, and I'm sure the more expensive and higher end pedals are more tunable. The product does well considering the price and build. I would definitely recommend it for someone just wanting to play around with effects sounds on their instruments.
