I use this in my regular setup. Because of it's wider footprint, I will likely replace it soon. But, in the mean time I do like it. It has a great sound and does exactly what I need it to do.

My most recent big use of it was for the guitar part on the musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". I needed the delay for a western sound during a few of the tunes. It worked very well for that.

I purchased this unit to add some special effects to my Theremin. I also tried it on my guitar and, very nice sounding analog delay and echos, would be Great to use for any lead guitar work.

I ordered this unit to use as a special effect for my theremin going straight into the PA mixer and to eliminate using an amp onstage. The sounds that this unit produces are excellent. I use the space echo setting with the speed regulated to give the theremin a really cool repeat and fade out effect. I also tried it on my guitar through an amp and, it sounds super there too, so I've got a two for one effect that I can use for any occasion. Great unit that definately has that retro tube effect delay and echo sound. Highly reccomended.

DE-1 Dan-Echo Guitar Pedal

PROS:
- It's pink.
- Very solid metal construction
- Spacey echoey sounds created are very retro, yet also very modern.
- More than just "delay" or "echo" if you like to actively tweak while playing.

CONS:
- Range isn't VERY long. Long enough, but I like wide-open delay.

I've owned mine for a year, and its definitely worth what you pay for it.
Bear in mind: I use a Deluxe Player's Strat, and a Hot Rod Deluxe III for my amp.

Four knobs and a rate toggle to vary the speed thresholds before using the speed knob. Knobs are very tight, and won't budge if you accidentally kick or stomp them. Pretty pink paint job OOZES retro! Very solid build.

I tend to use THIS PARTICULAR echo pedal more for active, spacey feedback sounds rather than as a true delay pedal. It does both jobs very well, though. tighten up the speed and you can get that Led Zeppelin tape-echo thing goin' on, EASY. OR, do what I do... In-line with a compressor before it, angle the guitar's pickups almost perpendicular to the speakers and start bending/curling one string (preferably on a natural harmonic). As it begins to feedback, use your free hand to vary the speed knob a little bit and it begins to bend your pitch and create these weird UFO sounds xD If you flick the toggle from one side to the other while the feedback repeats, you sometimes can coax a phaser gun sound out it. This method is used in the beginning of one of my original songs, and it really tripped people out! they wanted MORE!
Docking it by 2 points simply because the speed thresholds are sometimes not long or short enough. This is more of a vintage echo than a full-blown delay pedal. If you need a very moderate amount of delay, this will do the trick admirably. One thing I have noticed is that your tone definitely gets a bit damper and darker whether the pedal is in use or not. It's not enough to really be considered "tone-sucking", though. I kinda like it.
GREAT VALUE! You should definitely at least try this thing out. This is a pedal that kinda needs to grow on ya for a couple weeks before you really see how useful it is. Just would've liked a tad bit more range for the money.

I love this sound, it really stands out from most. I am definitely recommending this to all players who want any delay type sound.
Great features. Four knobs that are pretty easy to tweak. Once you really get into all of them, it opens up a great tonal pallette. A lot of different styles and the switch from Hi-Lo really attributes to that.
Seems pretty durable. Good material and build. A little bulky. I bought mine locally and used. The paint was scratched but nothing noticeable until you were up close. Which is pretty common with this pedal apparently. Something like that is not going to affect the sound it just bugs me.
I bought this at a local shop and the only reason I gave it a nine was because aside from the fact it WAS used, it still LOOKED used and I thought it would be cheaper. Still under the new price so I really can't complain all too much.

I bought my Dan Echo (DE-1) in '96 and haven't looked back since. At that time, they released this pedal, the Fab Tone (Distortion) and the Daddy-O (Overdrive). I bought all three, but immediately returned the Fab Tone, as it had too heavy of a midrange presence, and wasn't versatile enough.

I still have the Dan Echo and the Daddy-O, and until recently both were in my pedal board. I had to finally remove the Dan Echo because it was adding a high-pitched noise (think tinnitus) to my signal chain. The echo still sounds great, but I seriously though I had a preamp tube going out on the amp at first.

I'll definitely buy another one of these, when I get the chance, because it is a solid pedal that works well, and really gives that vintage analog/Echoplex-ish sound.
Standard delay pedal setup - mix, regeneration, speed and high frequency cut. Works well, easy to adjust your tone, and sounds amazing.
Quality is pretty high. Metal case has held up for 15 years now, with only minor scratches in the paint. The pots and jacks are plastic, but I haven't had one break on me yet, and I'm pretty hard on pedals. This pedal has been gigged countless times, and survived ~10 years of weekly practive/jam sessions.

My only complaint is that after about 10 years, it started to develop a high-pitched overtone (whether the effect was active or not) that took a little while to track down (At first I thought I had a preamp tube going out in my amp). I eventually started removing pedals one at a time, and when I removed the Dan Echo, the noise went away. I've noticed that other reviewers appear to have experienced something similar. I got 10+ years of use out of this before it started acting up, so I really can't complain, given how little these cost.

I haven't attempted to trace the circuit to see where the noise is coming from, but after I buy a replacement (and I plan to), I may try to work on the original, as I really like it, and it would be a shame to just throw it away.
I bought my Dan Echo (DE-1) in 1996 and it has served me well for almost 15 years or hard abuse, both in the studio/practice space and at gigs.

I still have the Dan Echo and continuously used it until I had to finally remove it from my pedalboard because it was adding a high-pitched noise to my signal chain(see above). The echo still sounds great. Very "Edge-like" in texture. It has a bit of that vintage "warble" built in, to emulate the old tape echo units.

i bout an original 96 dan echo from my local pawnshop for 15 bucks after reading noel gallagher uses 1 when i picked it up and used it i felt the heavey duty metal casing as well as the high quality pots and when i plugged it into my peavey xxl it sounded like a very expensive delay only concern is plastic jacks but they have lasted 15 years

This is my favorite pedal of all time, because it has such a great sound. You can do so much with this pedal, even use it on vocals. It has become a huge part of my live sound when I play electric guitar, whether rhythm or lead.The downside is that it's noisy and it breaks--I've gone through several. Also, it will boost your signal a bit, so be warned about that.This pedal is like a drug, though. Once you become accustomed to using it, it's hard to live without it. I tend to keep it on about 80% of the time and just adjust the blend and speed knobs from song to song to give me what I want.Using this pedal will change your sound in ways that will effect your playing and send you off in new directions. It's awesome.

This is surprisingly one of the better, vintage sounding delays out there for a fraction of the cost of others with fewer features. I wouldn't go so far as to say it has a great analog sound but it does a dang good job of recreating a vintage tape delay sound. It is good for live use if you run it through an effects loop. Straight in the amp the effect gets a bit too powerful and blown up. My favorite feature is the toggle switch that allows you switch back and forth from long and short delay times. It's not built as tough as boss pedals so be careful with the plastic knobs. GREAT for rockabilly slapback!!

I wasn't expecting to like this so much, but it is the best echo/delay pedal I have ever used. I was expecting to test it against others, and return this one. Instead, I kept this, returned others, and sold the rest. This is so much better than any other echo/delay I have used. I compared it side by side to the standard competitors, and also to boutique pedals costing hundreds more. This won out. This is a great sounding pedal. Don't be fooled by price or name. Go by sound. That's what I did, and I was stunned and surprised.
