OVERVIEW

The best bits of a Del Fuego in a smaller package.

The Diamond Amplification Positron was born from their wildly popular Del Fuego. The Positron takes your favorite parts of a Del Fuego and wraps them up in this smaller, more portable and cost effective package. The Positron is exactly as the name implies--extremely small and positively charged. This amp is hand-built in the time-honored tradition of sought after 1960s British models. It delivers revered vintage-type distortion without the "domestic havoc" and it is lightweight enough to save your back while still having the power to be gigable even in combination with two 4x12s. Like the Del Fuego, each Positron is hand wired on a hand-built fiberglass eyelet board using components selected for reliability and superior sonic character. The Positron features one channel, with only a Volume and Tone knob to contend with, the Positron uses three 12AX7 tubes, two EL84 tubes and a solid state rectifier.

FEATURES
  • Volume, Tone, On/Off and Standby controls
  • One channel
  • Black Tolex covering
  • Etched zinc logo
  • Three 12AX7 tubes
  • Two EL84 tubes
  • 18W

Comments about Diamond Amplification Positron Vanguard Series 18W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have used this amp for a couple years now. At first glance it seems to have limited features and low power with a higher than comparable price, but bare with me and I will try to break it down.

Firstly, it is not stated clearly, but this amp is a modern version of the 18-watt, non-master, Marshall circuit that can cost 7 times more. What the VHT special 6 is to blackface, this amp is to blues breaker.

On that note this amp is imported, but is hand wired point-to-point on an eyelet board, and a thick one at that. Boutique build and sound. For it's size this is a tank (literally, I've beaten this amp.) This also makes the amp mod-friendly to personalize.

Thirdly, the cathode bias re-introduces some of the "sag" of the old tube rectifiers, and also means that tube swaps are plug-n-play on the road, which fixed bias amps are not necessarily (factories set them cold and tubes vary.)

Fourthly, I have had this amp push 2 full 4x12 cabs before, so it can be a stack and still move the speakers without the muffle of too little power. It is at least, if not more powerful than the Jet City 20, Egnater Tweaker, or any of the others the same price (which are all pcb printed circuits, not bad but the extra features were paid with build specs).

Fifthly, while there is no effects loop and the amp is not high gain it goes from bluesy clean to the tubes-have-lost-it harmonic heaven without loosing clarity to saturation. What this means is that this amp takes every pedal under the sun better than anything save for a JC120. All the nuances of the pedal plus every harmonic the tubes have to offer, with no loss of clarity. If you want metal, adding pedals will keep the the mix-cutting mid-range and the note attack and clarity.

The irony here is that the only similar heads end up being the Tiny Terror, the Special 12/20, or other amps which start at 50% more, are not as powerful, or lower quality, and still aren't designed with the specific, classic British tone we all know.

Comments about Diamond Amplification Positron Vanguard Series 18W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Bought it on a whim to try something new. Couldn't even turn it up past 1 when trying in the store. LOUD little amp. Simple use with only 2 knobs. Better for us OCD type. Most people EQ their amps with pedals anyways. Match with a good partial open back cab for best tones. Buy one and feel like a champion!
