Electro-Harmonix

Create complex layered loops in performance.

The Electro-Harmonix 2880 offers the familiar control setup of a multitrack digital recorder plus flexible looping capabilities and track manipulation control. Multiple loops, in stereo and mono, can be pitch shifted, reversed and manipulated on four recording tracks. These four tracks can then be moved to two mixdown tracks, freeing them up to be reused. Flexible punch in/out is available on any recording track, allowing the musician to achieve "Looper Perfection" with the 2880. Complex multitrack loops may be created and overlaid in a performance situation with ease

The 2880's non-compressed audio delivers 16-bit/44.1kHz CD fidelity while providing audio storage of 480 seconds for each of the six available tracks when using a 256MB CF card. It comes with 128MB CF card and is comptable with cards up to 2GB. With external in/out MIDI clocking, it also provides automatic format conversion to Mac or PC via USB.

Features

  • Non-compressed audio 44.1k, 16-bit CD fidelity Audio storage of 480 seconds for each track
  • 6 available tracks when using a 256 megabyte card (expandable to 2 gigabytes).
  • External in/out MIDI clocking
  • Automatic format conversion to Mac or PC via USB.
  • Complex multi-track loops can be created with ease.

This is an under-appreciated device.  It sounds great, its very flexible, and its stable and reliable.  The 4 track design is nice bit of flexibility that is unique to this device.   The MIDI sync on the 2880 works, which is more than can be said for a lot of other loopers out there. The downsides:  You get used to it, but I found the button pressing sequence to create an initial loop to be counter-intuitive at first.  The 2880 doesn't come with the foot controller, which is almost a "mandatory option" for live work.  And the silk screening on my footcontroller is prone to peeling off.  Its a shame that you can't store and recall additional loops on the CF card; with multi-gigabyte capacities that's a glaring oversight, although I don't know how they would have made it easy to store and recall them without also putting in an LCD and increasing the price.  I also wish I could disable the 2880 responding to MIDI start/stop commands.  Unfortunately the 2880 starts up when you start  your MIDI sequencer (or drum machine) even if you haven't recorded an audio loop yet (it will start up the last loop you recorded!).  I'd prefer to handle that manually.  Finally, I wish the inputs were line level; the 2880 runs out of headroom quickly if you feed it the output of a mixer or other line-level device, although once again this can be worked around.

BEST LOOPER OUT THERE

This thing is completely easy to use, and functions perfectly.  No glitches, no troubles, and the ease of use is amazing. You can literally have an infinite number of phrases and tracks on this thing.  I haven't gotten the foot-pedal yet, but I'm about to.  Even without it, recording bass, guitar, and keyboard tracks is easy even though I have to press the button with my hands. This function is awesome: - Fader controls allow you to stack phrases that slowly fade out as more are recorded, you can control how quickly they fade (or keep them all equal volume and stack dozens of phrases) - Also, the reverse function is amazing. You can record, reverse that track and record another track, then flip it back so you have two tracks playing in opposite directions, or the same goes for the octave function. The only thing I would change about this machine is a LCD display for the tempo in BMP, and a tap tempo button.  It just has a slider for the tempo, and no readout, so if you change the tempo, it's very difficult to find its original position and thus difficult to keep new tracks in tune with previous ones once you move the tempo slider. BUT I have a synthesizer with a BPM tempo control, tap  tempo button, and a LCD screen, so I can just sync the 2880 to that, problem solved. Aside from the tempo slider, there's not a thing in the world I would change about this thing. Well, I might add an XLR input with 48v phantom power and a bank of pre-set drum beats, but you can't have everything.  The metronome click track is fine for playing. The whole looper is absolutely amazing.  The audio quality is great and setting levels, pan left and right, input volume, dry volume and effects volume, it's all really easy to manage and use. I tried out the Roland RC-50 looper at a music store, and everything they say is true: it's full of glitches.  I played it for 5 minutes and every other time I started or stopped a track or re-recorded a track, it gave me this weird feedback and crunching noise, and then wouldn't record the next phrase properly. DO NOT BUY ANY OTHER LOOP STATION. This thing is completely worth the money, very versatile, and the functions are great.  It's the real deal.

Best looper with midi clock sinc!  So awesome!  I think the loop length is somewhat limited though and its time when sincing to an external clock doesn't seems to be adjustable and it loops to fast but it sends a solid clock out.

This thing has become the core of my songwriting methods. When I'm not using it, I wish I was using it. With Its pitch-bending tempo control, it has surpassed anything BOSS has put out In sheer expressive capability. I am greatly disturbed at the lack of attention this thing has gotten.
