OVERVIEW

A tone tweaker's dream based on a powerful tube configuration!

4-channel, all-tube powered head, the Powerball amp head offers sound-shaping options unrivaled by any other. Designed to satisfy the exacting demands of discerning players, it delivers all the tonal hues and colors you need to paint the most vivid musical pictures imaginable. Housed inside this newly designed enclosure is a powerhouse 100W amp boasting 6L6GC tubes. The Engl amp head delivers the sonic goods you need to dial in everything from contemporary ultra-high gain lead tone to crystal-clear clean and punchy crunch sounds. An astonishing amount of gain reserves, remarkable tonal versatility, and bone-rattling bottom end have crowned the Powerball king of the hill among modern-day guitar amp heads.

Thanks to its ability to crank out tight, focused low end, glossy top end and jaw-dropping sound pressure levels, the Powerball amp head provides the contemporary guitarist with richly detailed tone and the kind of cut-through-the-din assertiveness that sets standards for amps in this class. And in keeping with the Engl tradition of engineering excellence, it sports a host of hip features: a second master volume, electronic power amp monitoring, an adjustable FX loop, and a Depth Punch knob that shapes the head's response by beefing up the low end. But that's not the last word on this Engl head's innovative features: you also get two different sound voicings, Open and Focused. Engl created these voicings to extend the range of lead sounds you have at your disposal by tweaking mid-range response to suit different playing styles and applications.

There are a few more handy features to rave about: It ships with a Z-5 Custom Footswitch Port. Designed to accept the ENGL Z-5 footswitch (sold separately) that lets you control all key sound-shaping functions remotely. ENGL has added another new audiophile wrinkle—an adjustable noise gate for the Lead channel. Old world craftsmanship and highest quality components are part of what makes Engl amp heads so special, and the Powerball is no exception.

this amp sings. Has a lot of mids focused in the tone, making it cut so much more in the mix. I used to run a Mesa Dual Rec and the ENGL dominates. Super clean, snappy, tight distortion without the flab. Sounds amazing thru a Recto cab, so most anything loaded with V30's and you'll be fine. The coolest part of this amp, the master A and B volume, excellent for solos,or use the mid focused and get your solo tone dialed in that'll be sure to cut thru the mix. Get the footpedal, it makes a world of a difference. All 4 channels are usable. Dont get discouraged by some reviews found on other sites (Harmony, etc) that describe the amp as quiet or not able to cut thru the mix. Those guys dont know how to dial in an amp. Mids are there for a reason, if you scoop them, you will get scooped out of the mix. Dial it in with the band present to get an amazing complimentary sound with another guitarist.

I dig the tone on it's own great for lead but the rhythm tone is thin and frail, I have a framus cobra, a hughes and kettner triamp mkII, a diezel einstein, multiple dual recitfers rev c,d,e,f and g as well as the 3 channel versions, I also hae a few old jCM 800's and a JVM head. this amp soudns good but to be honest it can't sound as good and thick as the other heads I have mentioned. Also it doesn't cut worth a crap live. On stage it is hard to hear your self with the mids maxed in the open mode. They need to make it sound thicker as well as cut better the mid frequency is low. Also i have tried a multiple assortment of speakers and I have still had no luck with it. I play metal and I assumed this would eb the amp. If you get the chance look inside the amp, it has hot glue everywhere and has the littlest and cheapest componets you can buy. The board is thin as well as the cables inside are jsut low grade computer linkage cables. No quality at all, and the tolex tears VERY easy

Mind-blowing

By Thom Reed

from Miami Beach

Powerful, Flexible, and the Gain Astonishing: Anyone who claims this amp will not cut never played one, or is just not ready for an amp of this scale. The ENGL Powerball is a mind-blowing, in a league of its own. The clean is clean and the gain a beast, and yes, it cuts like a knife!

I really like the powerball its the best amp ive ever owned. i got it after a triple recto and a krank rev 1 series, and could get the tone i wanted. ive only had one problem with this amp which is when im done playing and switch to standby i can still play through the amp, but besides that its awesome.

ENGL IS KING

By Geo

from Flagstaff

All I can say is, WOW!!!!!!! This Amp is a highly versitle BEAST. Mentioned in the past reviews, this amp can do it all; from cleans, to 7 string rythems, to sweeping picking / shredding. I played and owned a Peavery 5150, Randall mTS, Marshall JCM2000 TSL and a Line 6 Vetta, and those amps were good but they were missing that one thing that Engl gave me, PURE AGGRESSIVE, FOCUSED TONE!!!!! My gear consists of a Gibson Gothic EMGS (81/85), SOvtek Cab. Loaded with (G12T-75s, Vin.30s), and a decimator Niose reduction pedal to take care of what the built in noise suppersor doesnt. Except for that, I say this amp is flawlessly built as well as tone built.

For every hard rocker and metalist

By Mjolnir

from Louisville, KY

I fell into this amp after trying out countless others including Marshall, Peavey, Crate, and Bugera. This clarity and tone of this amp is unbelievable and it even has a really nice clean. The crunch channel has really nice tone as well and can get a good southern rock sound. The gain channels are where this amps sweet spot is. They are by far the best I have played and heard from many amps. I don't have to run any sort of overdrive through it. The amp also has a boost, which eliminates the needs for a boost (it's still optional). Sustain is amazing. The noise gate is alright as well. Lots of options to tweak the sound.

ENGL Powerball is the way to go!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

The ENGL Powerball is loaded with every variety of tones you can imagine. From bright leads, to defined punchy low gains, the spectrum of sound that this amp can produce amazes me more and more each day.The only problem I have with the amp is that you need to pay for the appropriate footswitch. I am just using and old marshall footswitch to change channels, but ultimately the ENGL can do so much more with the real footswitch. The price for ENGL amps is always high, only because the quality of the amps is insurmountable. Definitely worth the price. If you are a searcher of that "grail tone". Then look no further. trust me, buy it.

OMG!

By shredhead626

This head is freaking amazing! I can't believe how brutally the high gain channels are voiced. This amp is a must have if you play any kind of modern metal. The added bottom and open/focused features really allow you to dial in the right tone for your needs, and the built in noise gate rocks. I've owned and played through countless high end amps, and this one continiuos impressing me where the others fell short. Just do yourself a favor and avoid spending money on other amps that will fall short in the end, buy an ENGL.

Simply Amazing

By CharnelFlame

from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Have had this amp about a year now, still amazes me everytime i plug in. Killed absolutely every mesa, marshall, kettner and framus i tried. Easily the perfect amp for myself. It does everything from sparkling clean to Jimmy Page rock to Screaming 8 finger tapping shred. And with total clarity and focus. Recommend getting the Engl Pro 4x12 Slant cab with it, monster cab that is voiced for this amp and really does make a difference.

awesome

By Batman?

this head is it. the tone is great, at any volume. The gate works really well, lets you open up your chords & leads - but stays tight for tech as well. The clean is gorgeous. look, this head is what you've been looking for. I may not own a thousand expensive heads (i notice that most guys who do stink anyway) but I can honestly say this head is well worth the money. It especially worth it since it has a good range of tones. This is definitely not a one trick pony
