OVERVIEW

(Open Box) Amazing 5150III tone in a size that works in the bedroom and studio.

The EVH 5150III LBXII is a 15-watt guitar amp head that packs an extraordinary and powerful punch. This 2.0 version of the company's diminutive easy-to-carry “lunchbox” head features the famous Green and Blue channels, delivering sparkling clean tone and punchy gain to inspire unlimited artistic expression.

Armed with four ECC83S (12AX7) preamp and two EL84 power tubes, the LBXII also includes dual concentric gain and volume controls for precise and independent control of each channel, as well as shared EQ presence and resonance controls.

Dial in a crystal clean tone or turn the gain up for a bluesier counterpart on the Green channel, and when you are looking to bring the house down, hit the one-button footswitch and select the Blue channel for a tight and compressed overdriven tone with sustain for days.

Bedroom players can utilize the 1/4-power switch to reduce the head to 3.5 watts and avoid disturbing the rest of the household, while studio and live musicians can leverage this same feature to turn up the head for a squeezed and spongy tone.

Boasting exceptional construction, fierce tone and distinctive style with a black control panel and white metal grill cage with iconic EVH striped motif, the LBXII is a phenomenal performing amp.

Comments about EVH 5150 III LBXII 15W Tube Head:

First impression was that it is noticeably bigger than other 15 watt "lunchbox" heads I own. Plugged it into an Orange PPC212 to get jamming right away. I was thrilled that this head included as resonance and presence control, many other lunchbox amps leave those features off. As with many lunchbox amps, it's only 15 watts but it is a LOUD 15 watts. Plenty of volume for the shows I play, where the amp is going to be mic'd anyway.

The clean channel is quite versatile. You won't get Fender-style cleans, but you can get a nice clean sound from the Green channel. With the gain turned up, you can get a good SRV or early AC/DC style overdrive sound. The Green channel takes pedals very well, which you will need to get a classic rock drive sound.

The Blue channel is all metal all day. It sounds great, but it should be noted that even with the gain turned down and the presence turned up the Blue channel lacks some clarity and articulation when playing nuances in full chords. Even with the gain setting at 1 or 2, the Blue channel has a very high-gain tone. Turn up the gain to 6 or 7 and you're in thrash metal heaven. But if you're looking for a more classic rock drive, this Blue channel is simply too high gain.

A few annoyances for me: 1) The on/off/standby are on the back of the head; not the end of the world, but it makes it a little more difficult to easily turn the amp on and off, especially in a gig setting. 2) This head does NOT come with a carry case. That was somewhat misleading since the demo videos both show the carry case. 3) The footswitch cable is kind of short, so in a larger stage setting it may be difficult to set up the amp conveniently. Then again, in a large gig setting you probably wouldn't be using a 15 watt amp!

Overall, a great little amp that is easy to carry and sounds fantastic. Just be aware that the Blue channel is VERY high gain, and you may need to purchase a few accessories with it.

Comments about EVH 5150 III LBXII 15W Tube Head:

I was stocked when I saw this come out because I have the 5150 100 and 50 W heads, and love the blue channel. I got the LBX, loved it, but really couldn't use it live because there is no clean channel, nor did the crunch channel clean up (with guitar's volume rolled back) to my needs. The red channel is just over the top to me. I sold it. When I finally got the LBX II in the studio, I was kinda disappointed with the blue channel. It sounded more like the red channel to me. I literally had to keep the gain on 0.8 or so (on the very edge of kickin in at all) to hear a crunch that I liked. The clean channel is fantastic, so it's a good platform to take pedals, but I was missing the glorious blue channel I have in my other 5150s. Again, if I don't love it, I don't keep it, so it went back.

Comments about EVH 5150 III LBXII 15W Tube Head:

Love this second verison.Had the first too much all gain on both crunch and full burn.No volume control between them. This 2nd version with clean channel more verisitle, can go clean(green channel) to a nice crunchy tone with independent gain and volume control.Tone contrls are shared but works ok on both.Yeah cant get everything on a small amp like this.
Crunch channel(blue channel) is nice very crunchy and more tha enough gain to use as a lead channel.Gets a little hissy with alot of gain. But still clean distinct notes even with lots of gain,no muddyness.Love the amp over all.Very cool looking amp as well.Replacing my Marshall DSL 15 watt head and cabs with it.Got 2 of the EVH 1 -12. 8 ohm cabs(all wood no MDF), going to add a jack to one of the cabs to run them in series at 16 ohms.Do wish the amp had more than one speaker outs. All and all great little amp, can't be too loud in the clubs we mostly play, works out well. But don't be fooled by the 15 watts. This little guy can get very loud !

Comments about EVH 5150 III LBXII 15W Tube Head:

I have never written a review for music gear before. About 20 minutes ago i plugged this into an EVH 1x12 cab. Using just the half power setting with the gain at 1 o'clock on the blue channel I chugged out some thrash riffs and my jaw dropped. Moments later I was laughing out loud at how good this thing sounds. The fidelity and tightness of the blue channel is a thing of joy. Crushingly heavy but articulate and natural sounding. Believe the hype
