OVERVIEW

Amplifier solution for many challenges.

The Fryette Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier is an easy to use Power Attenuator for controlling the volume of high-powered amplifiers with none of the drawbacks of a conventional attenuator, and a Tube Power Booster that can turn any mini-amp, preamp, pedal, modeling amp or modeling app into a gig-ready amplifier!
If you have ever used a traditional Power Attenuator, you have already experienced the loss of tone and dynamics of your amplifier at various volume settings, and the frustration with the rotary level switch that always seems one step too loud or one step too quiet.

The Power Station not only solves all of those problems, but also provides you with more sonic options in one convenient, lightweight package:
Perfectly preserves the tone of the attenuated amplifier at any volume setting down to whisper level.
Preserves the dynamic feel and speaker response at any volume.
Provides a post distortion integrated effects loop.
Provides an XLR balanced and a 1/4-in. unbalanced line out for direct recording or live performance signal processing.
Choose 2/4, 8 or 16 ohms separately for both the amplifier and cabinet matching. No more nerve-wracking impedance mis-matching that could damage your amplifier.
Compact and easy to carry, the Power Station sits comfortably on top of an amp head, combo or desktop.
Completely safe for any tube amplifier.

Re-amping
As a re-amper, the Power Station breathes new life and utility into your favorite gear:
Any small amp, preamp or modeler can cut a live gig with a full band.
Crank a mini amp to the threshold of destruction, then adjust the Power Station to preserve the original tone or create an entirely new identity for it.
Perfect as mono power amplifier for guitar preamps, floor preamps and modeling preamps.
Ideal as an effects power amp for a Wet/Dry amp rig or a monitor power amp for live modeling direct to FOH.
Great as a desktop power amp for adding tube power to direct recordings for any instrument or signal source.
Silent Mode feature provides versatile reactive load for silent recording using low or high powered amplifiers.
Silent Mode, Balanced XLR Out and Unbalanced Line Out remain operational even with power disconnected.
The Power Station provides a variety of performing and recording solutions for every kind of playing or performing application/environment.

The Power Station breathes new life and functionality into any amp large or small.

I needed a power soak/attenuator and an amp for powering Helix into a 2x12 V30's cab, and for an amp I have that's just loud as hell. I can use that amp with no cab and a line out to the board, or with a cab and its whisper quiet! The PS-2 came thru in spades for me! The amount of tonal adjustments available using it as an attenuator is just ridiculous in a good way. On the PS-2 amp side, it sounds organic and enhances my Helix guitar processor, and in fact it never sounded so good! Built like a tank, and with good strong feeling quality thru out, I would recomend this to anyone needing an amp or attenuator!

Comments about Fryette PS-2 Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier:

The tone quest is a long journey with seemingly no end. The day I plugged this into my rig and turned it on, I jumped a mile closer to where I wanted to be. This is an amazing power amp with a wonderful tone.

I am using a tube preamp pedal into the line-in. Previously I was using only the power section of a 20W head but made the decision to change due to the bulkiness of having an amp head I wasn't fully taking advantage of and more importantly the tone just wasn't where it needed to be. The Power Station helped me achieve a smaller footprint as well as the sound I was after.

Not only is this a stellar power amp, its versatility and features are nothing short of amazing. While the simple yet effective tone shaping features are a clear win on this piece of gear, one easily overlooked feature is the input level selector. This allows you to attenuate the incoming signal, making it usable as not only a gigging amp, but a reasonable and quiet bedroom amp as well (without having to sacrifice on sound). In addition, the exceptional I/O allows for use in any rig. I am using this as a reamp box for recording as well as a method for silent recording using speaker simulation software in my DAW.

This is more than I could have asked for in a single product and it is perhaps my favorite gear purchase I've ever made. Well done.

Comments about Fryette PS-2 Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier:

I have been trying for years to find a product that lowers the loudness of your amp but doesn't ruin the tone. The Fryette PS2 is the solution.

I have several Dr Z amps which I love but the issue was that I couldn't turn them up anywhere near the volume I needed to get them to overdrive. My band would have kicked me out. I tried various brands of attenuators and while they are good, they all seem to mess with your tone. My solution for years was to run the amp clean and use overdrive pedals to get my gain. I had a decent sound with the pedals but I always felt I was missing out on the full experience.

I found out about the PS2 on a music forum and was interested right away. After a bit of research, I purchased it from Musicians Friend. Shipping was quick as usual.

I hooked it up to one of my amps and cranked the amp. I couldn't believe how good it sounded. It was my amp, cranked but at a low volume. This was EXACTY what I was looking for. I can get my amp cranked but control the overall volume so I don't bother the neighbors and overpower my bandmates on stage.

As a bonus, there is an effects loop with the PS2 which I put my delay and reverb pedals. I was impressed how good the pedals sounded in the loop. It is a cool way to add an effects loop to an amp that does not have one built in.

The only shortcoming with tone with the PS2 is that since you aren't playing the speaker at full volume, you do get a slight difference in your tone. A portion of your cranked amp tone comes from driving the speaker hard and moving a lot of air. You just can't replicate that at a lower volume. Not an issue of the PS2, it is just physics. The difference is so minimal, it is totally fine.

The downside to the PS2 is that it is expensive. However, if you sell some of your overdrive pedals you can justify the cost since you will use your amp for overdrive primarily. The PS2 does have tubes so you will need to be careful with it as you would any other tube amp.

Comments about Fryette PS-2 Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier:

I bought this for my Marshall Stacks which include a 100w Super Bass, vintage 1970 Park 75, and early 70s Marshall Major. It is the only product that I know of that can handle up to 200W. Great hearing saver, even if you just use it to tame the loudness down a little bit. Like anything, nothing beats the pure air movement of an all out cranked amplifier, but this product helps you put when you can't blow out the neighborhood.

Comments about Fryette PS-2 Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier:

Purchased primarily to be a clean, uncolored power amp for a modeler (which it does very well), this unit has so many other useful abilities:
    - near-transparent attenuation of a high-powered tube amp (or amplification of a low-powered one)
    - providing a post-power amp effects loop
    - silent recording
    - correcting amp/cab impedance variance

Much has been said in other reviews about how well the unit works (which I concur with), so I'll mention a few pointers that might be useful to new owners:
    - The input pad button on the front gives you much finer control over volume taper, but lowers the volume quite a bit. If you aren't getting the volume you think you should, check this control.
    - To set the presence and depth controls to "zero", turn them fully counter-clockwise (not at noon).
    - Because the impedance of both the input amp and output cab are switchable, care should be taken that these settings are correct before powering on if you change these or move the unit around regularly.
    - The effects loop is located after the line out in the signal chain. Fryette recommends using a Y-cable at the end of your effects chain (with one split running back to the PS's effects return) if you need to tap an effected line out.*
    - If using effects in a 4CM (4-cable method) configuration with an amp going through the PS, all effects in the "pre" location require isolated power from those in the PS's loop ("post" location) to avoid ground-induced oscillation.*

    * = I have not verified these scenarios personally, but thought I'd mention them as they came up frequently in the PowerStation mega-thread on the Gear Page forum and aren't mentioned in the manual (which as of this writing has not been updated for version 2 of the PowerStation).

Overall a high-quality unit, with a lot of versatility and potential uses for the price.

Comments about Fryette PS-2 Power Station Integrated Reactance Amplifier:

Absolutely love the Fryette PS-2! I've used a ton of attenuators over the years (the THD stuff, the Weber Mass, etc) but it seemed like the one constant was that they always squashed my tone regardless of what amp I used them with. The PS2 remains very close to the original tone even at super low volumes, and even then all I tend to do is flip the switch to "Brite" to add in some highs at low volume to compensate and then I have my "original" amp tone right back! This unit can also be used as a portable power amp solution in case you wanted to pair it with a modeler as well which is a pretty nifty feature since it has the 50w tube power amp built in as part of the package. Steve Fryette did a killer job with this unit, the PS-2 works as well they said it would!
