OVERVIEW

A special FullDrive with upgraded features.

In celebration of Fulltone's 20 years as the world's premiere boutique pedal manufacturer, Fulltone has released this special Fulldrive called the "FD3" featuring a real NOS JRC4558D chip, not the current production NJM4558.

It has the Fulltone-exclusive Order switch which places the Boost either before or after the Overdrive section of the circuit: After takes whatever sound you have set and increases the Volume so you pop out of the mix. Before pounds the input of the Overdrive channel and increases the distortion, not really the volume...more like the FD2.

You get to toggle between two selectable modes: "90's" original FD2 voicing and "Wide Asym".

It has a completely independent, discrete JFET Clean Boost with a Volume control and a unique mini-knob controlling Germanium Diode "limiting" function that has to be felt to be really appreciated. Clockwise on this knob takes out the strident, irritating spikes that occur with other clean boosts when you hit the strings hard. This Boost circuit does not invert the signal like most clean-boosts and can be used with or without the overdrive section of the pedal.

Plus the housing is about 20% smaller than the traditional Fulldrive2.

FEATURES
  • Real NOS JRC4558D chip
  • Fulltone-exclusive Order switch which places the Boost either before or after the Overdrive section

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I use it primarily to act as a clean boost to my Marshall AVT100, excellent sound quality of this unit in comp cut mode, so much headroom. i tured the volumne to max, and override to 9o clock, and it is still clean,

Then I move on to test the 90 mode and wide asymmetric mode, I compare it to my OD1 channel of my marshall, which has a 12aX7 tube. The Fulldrive 3 sound very close to my Marshall, although my Marshall sound just a little bit more dimensional, but the Fulldrive 3 sound really really close, to a point I cannot distinguish it is a solid state overdrive. Excellent job for a solid state drive pedal

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Another great unit from Fulltone. Magazines and professional reviewers are giving 5 stars to the Fulldrive 3. Experienced amateur musicians are giving the thumbs up. The reviewer below who said this unit "has too much bass and less presence, with no clarity" is either from the competition or has no clue how to use these pedals. Must be a kid playing with a new toy or someone with substandard gear.

The FD3 is not better or worse than the FD2. I have both. They are different but equally great. The FD3 has smooth clipping and the "real clean" boost option is very handy. The 90's mode is the original FD2 voicing. The Germanium Diode is another winner here. It helps you control the output for the clean boost. i.e., reduce spikes in sound when you hit the strings too hard.

Most of the overdrives out there are based on either the Tube Screamer or the SD-1.I have both and added the Fulldrive to my board because it gives me something different. The FD3 also has the Comp Cut option. I play blues, country, jazz, rock. I am not a big fan of heavy distortion, so these 3 pedals complement each other perfectly. I have the FD3 after my Wampler Ego compressor. Works great.

Once again, to the "cork sniffers" out there who rate a pedal based on its price only, do not underestimate brands such as Fulltone, Boss and others. There is a reason why many professional players have these pedals on their boards. There is no "best" pedal, or guitar, or amp. If so, professional musicians would be buying only that specific brand. Think about it. It's all about personal preference. But no one can deny that the FD3 is an excellent pedal. I can get so many tones from this baby that I am really impressed with it. I alternate between the FD2 and FD3. I like both and never trade or sell my pedals or guitars. I get too attached to my gear. They nailed this one, again.

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

It's great pedal, but compared to FD2 it's totally different. I mean, it has too much bass and less presence than FD2 mosfet. No clarity.
If FD3 is the first full-drive, I am sure this will satisfy you with the versatile tones.

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm not much for heavy distortion. Clean Boost and Smooth Overdrive seem to give me enough to work with.
This pedal, Fulltone FullDrive 3, gives me exactly those options in a nice compact size.
I previously built a BYOC Overdrive 2, that had Boost & Overdrive, but the 2 footswitches were too close together. I was often hitting both switches when I really only wanted one. I actually preferred the OD2 Tones to my Hermida ZenDrive.
I run my pedals through the Clean Channel of a Tech21 Trademark 60 & prefer to keep my pedal board space to a minimum. Really only 3 pieces: Amp/Channel Footswitch, Boost/OD Pedal, & Boss Tuner. That's really all I need for the tones I'm looking for.
The FullDrive 3 has the clipping options(like the OD2), but also goes a step further than the OD2, by having the switch that let's you alternately place the Boost before or after the Overdrive.
Additionally, the FullDrive has the Dynamics knob(instead of the OD2 Silicon/Diode switch) for the Boost(JFET) circuit.

I've only used the FullDrive 3 once, so far, in last week's practice.
No surprises or major hiccups ... just some good clean boost tones and some good overdrive tones.
I was conservative and barely turned the knobs up halfway, so there appears to be plenty more headroom if it's ever needed.
I also did not try the Boost & OD together ... I have no doubt that would have been interesting to say the least.
I opened the pedal(quite easy with the thumbscrews) up and noticed that the JRC4558D chip is soldered in.
That's a bummer and I'm deducting a star for it.
If I ever wanted to try a different Op-Amp, it's difficult to do without permanently modding the pedal & voiding the warranty.
Curiously, there's another Op-Amp looking chip in the circuit that is socketed but also has its labeling sanded off.
I'm not in any hurry to experiment with it however, since it's such a good pedal as it is & I plan to make it my main pedal for a while.
For my needs, I give this pedal 4 stars.

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Bought this pedal out of curiousity as I've been a long time advocate of the Fulltone Fulldrive 2. If I hadn't have bought and used the FD2 before hand I'd be giving this pedal 5 stars. However, after owning and using the FD2 extensively over nearly 5 years, and then purchasing this, I will continue to use the FD2. Reason being is the pedal's core sound. Bottom line it is not as clear sounding as the FD2. The FD2 running in same exact configuration as the FD3 just seems more distinct, and gainfull..i.e. MORE power and clarity. If you need the seperate boost section of this pedal it is worth the purchase, but other then that..if clarity is of the utmost importance as one of your tone goals, get the FD2 instead.

Can't miss, fail safe OD that picks up where TS808's & 9's leave off. More dynamic and can sound good in other ways than a clean boost.

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I replaced my noisy SD-1 pedal with this (I did not want to go though modifying the SD-1). If you are looking for a really good overdrive you should not be disappointed with this box. The Boost alone sends my Mesa in to beast mode.
Worth the money! It's has so many combinations of tone your ears will be bleeding before you can explore them all in one sitting.
It has very good build quality, nice switches and pots and it takes up less room on the board than two BOSS pedals side by side.

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

All of Fulltone's products are built like tanks and sound amazing and the Fulldrive 3 is no exception. I had a Fulldrive 2 about a decade ago and the Fulldrive 3 seems to have improved on everything that possibly could have been improved while not tampering with the qualities that have made this one of the all time classic overdrive pedals. The first noticeable thing is that this version is quite a bit smaller than the Fulldrive 2, requiring a little less real estate on the pedal board. The overdrive tone remains the same, faithfully capturing the sound of an old TS808 but the overdrive possibilities don't stop there. There is a switch that allows you to have the classic TS sound with the slight mid-hump that tone is famous for, but also allows you to switch to a more transparent O.D. tone as well as a very boosted tone with increased headroom. A major improvement, in my opinion, from the previous version is the boost side of the pedal. It can now be used alone, without engaging the o.d. side of the pedal. This works really well as a nice clean boost to thicken up your clean tone. Another long overdue improvement to the boost is that there is now a switch that allows you to select its position in the chain as being either boost followed by overdrive, or overdrive followed by boost. These two options allow the boost to either act as a volume boost or act as a boost that mostly increased overdrive without a huge change in volume. I use this pedal in combination with a Fulltone Plimsoul and am able to cover a wide variety of overdriven and distortion tones. I'd highly recommend this pedal to blues players looking to capture that classic SRV tone as well as classic rock players. An outstanding product!

Comments about Fulltone FullDrive 3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

i love that this pedal is compact and has independent boost and overdrive channels. i also like the fact that you can place the boost before or after the overdrive channel. i own an OCD as well and the fulldrive three is much more open sounding and more natural. the boost can be very loud, one of the loudest I've heard. it's a great pedal and will stay on my board for a long time to come.
