This is the best pedal distortion I've ever heard. Of course, it's subjective to say that. The important thing that the manual points out is that you really have to play around and this can be overlooked. The beauty of the OD that I think some people overlook is that it has enough juice to overdrive your tube amp without any drive at all, especially at 18v. I've seen video demos on the OD setting where the drive was all the way down and the volume cranked. That setting, through a tube amp gave a rich OD. So, the typical 12 o'clock on both knobs may not sound all that earth-shattering for someone looking for more drive. In fact, the OD cranked with a low to moderate volume won't be all that overdriven. So, one may be inclined to write it off as weak. I say, no no my friend, play around more.Same with the distortion... crank the volume and drop the drive and you have yet another kind of OD tone... turn them BOTH on and you can yet ANOTHER blended tone... play with the EQ's on both together and you can shape your sound to many degrees. The best setting I have found is a slightly louder signal on the OD, so that when I'm playing clean with both channels off, I can stomp on the OD channel and get a louder tone with some warmth for blues/classic rock sound. Then, I create a deep and smooth distortion... then, I can stomp them both if needed. It's hard to say, "this is the best ever" but I can say this, there are many possibilities that can be achieved. Take your time, learn how each dial and switch effects your sound. You just may find you can achieve just about any style with this thing. The mid range knob on the distortion channel has a HUGE sweep. It's insane.

To me the Features are above normal in quality and the quality of the Fulltone hand made propaganda does bear some decent truths but the unit overall does not have enough juice with my system. You think it would with the uf500 coil for tone on one side and the overdrive built in on the other side but it just sounds too mushy to me. I was also concerned too because the GT-500's paper work stated that if you run it on 18Volts that it may cause an overload within some amps instrument inputs. This I didn't want to play with. I am running two 5150 III heads and I placed this GT-500(powered by 9volts) in the front of both amps with a Morley signal splitter with the amps on the first channel with the gain up about 3/4. Ummmm it's ok..I liked it but after trying the Vox Saturator under the same circumstances I was floored. The Vox JS Saturator worked much better for me. I think for the person who is focused on the single coil strat mode with a older lower gain amp might be better suited with this GT-500. The good thing is that Musician's Friend works with us for needs such as exchanging an item or simply returning an item within reason. I switched this one and I am pleased. Thanx Musician's Friend!!

Comments about Fulltone GT-500 FET Distortion + Booster and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:
I've only had this box for about a month but I've already found it to be the most versatile overdrive/distortion box I've ever owned. I use this box along with a Vox Ice9 and Vox Satchurator. All of these drive into a Tech21 Sansamp GT2 to go direct to a sound system. This gives me a very wide range of amplifier tones at the click of a pedal or flip of a switch. The GT500 is placed after the other two distortions so that the overdrive side of the pedal can raise the volume on these two pedals for soloing, as well as the distortion side of the GT500, this works really well! The OD/Distortion placement switch is genius. The overdrive side can be used for a really nice clean boost, solo boost or a really hot overdrive. The tone controls for the OD side are very adjustable offering a wide range of tones. The Distortion side is the real story though. This thing absolutely screams!!! Incredible bite when you want it, smooth as silk, lots of harmonics, this is a very rich sounding distortion, very controllable, very touch sensitive. For example it is very easy to dial up the amp tone for the lead guitar on Boston's "Long Time" but that is not all it can do. The tone control on the distortion side is (yes, two great tone control sections on one box!) extremely versatile, the midrange control is incredible. The Fulltone webpage has some tracks done with this unit...give that a listen to see what I mean. This pedal rocks!!!

Comments about Fulltone GT-500 FET Distortion + Booster and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:
The OD/boost seems best for me,until i hit the distortion side !
Thats a good crisp but smooth distortion with a good amount of gain that rocks !
Distortion channel works with other OD pedals like my green rhino OD.
A great EQ section really helps get your sound.
I ran it into a Rebel 30 on the clean channel with a nova delay and hardwire reverb, the glass slide was a frieking great sound i will say that much for sure.
I am impressed and pleased to have this preamp pedal in my board !
For blues on OD is very good, but switch too slide and hit distortion the channel for some great slide tones to die for !
Some cant try them out before buying,im one of those folks.
Im one happy puppy !
Try it on a clean tube amp, like a blues junior and you will discover for yourself.
The Green Rhino OD is very tame compared with the Fulltone OD/boost channel,so if others thinks the GT-500 OD/boost isnt a strong OD,its relative too what your used too really.
Push the OD/boost abit into a tube amp and the OD gets wicked as i ever want!
The Distortion range is wide and goes past my needs at 2 o"clock .
At 10 o"clock its similar to a JCM800 sound,it goes Stone temple pilots after 1-2 o'clock,it gets quite fierse after that.
Its a open not highly compressed sound that lets you highs work well without harshness , and very good sustain .
I havent tried my keeley compressor with it yet.
Comfortly Numb comes too mind easily !
IMHO opinion i reccomend the Green Rhino also,a great transparent preamp for sure !

Any combo of distortion over drive you want plus equalizers can get some great tone out of it. it's lated me 3 years and counting of heavy use. and it really is just a great pedal one side can be used for the main distortion and the other side as a solo boost and not to mention this pedal is quite loud at just 9 volts at 18 its just a sonic destoyer.
overdrive and distorion and switch that determines the order not to mention the beautiful Equalizers that lets you get almost any tone you could want with enough tinkering.
3 years of stompin on it and still going strong
Kinda pricey but i you think about its two pedals in one go so its actully quite the steal! And it's worth ever penny

Backstory: I own a vintage '62 Rickenbacker with original everything. This guitar is fabulous but extremely picky. No pedal seemed to work with it. So, I got an Egnater Tweaker amplifier to get some of the classic tube amp tones I've so desired, but I didn't have a quick way to "turn off the heat" on stage. I still needed an overdrive pedal to switch quickly between clean and high gain tones. When I tried this thing out in the store with my own equipment, I was pleased. The more I play with it at home, the more excited I get about using this thing. It's perfect for nailing that high-gain tone without stepping back to the amp head, and the distortion channel is perfect for solo's! This pedal doesn't change the tone of the guitar, just the drive of the tubes. It's a true wonder!

I previously had the cheap boss distortion. This pedal is a HUGE step up. Playing through a fender pro jr. this pedal gives me alot of options to adjust highs and lows. Well built, sturdy, not too big, and really sounds great.
Comments about Fulltone GT-500 FET Distortion + Booster and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:
After I owned the Fulltone OCD overdrive pedal for some time, I discovered the GT-500 and was immediately intrigued. I've always thought the way to go is have the clean/dirty sounds emanate from one pedal if possible (like the Korg 105od pedal). That way the tone is consistent throughout. In the past I used two different pedals (usually an overdrive and a distortion pedal), with one providing my main sound, and the other when I needed a boost and more distortion. I got some good sounds but you could tell, each pedal had its own personality. OK, so I bought this pedal and was convinced, that the way I should set it up was put the switch in Boost---Dist and go from there. I got a great sound on the overdrive, but was not happy about the distortion sound. After messing around with this pedal (and even setting it aside for months at a time) I finally found that with the switch on Dist---Boost, I can get a pretty good clean/dist combo. Now when I say clean, that is a relative term. I mean with a slight bit of distortion, then when I hit the boost switch (so both are on), my afterburners kick in. Settings are Distortion at 10 o'clock and Drive at 2 o'clock. Now it works for me. Hope this makes sense.

I?ve been looking for a ?pedal for all seasons? one that does it all, and the GT-500 is that pedal! I currently have a Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion, it?s a good pedal and has served me well, but the GT-500 blows it out of the water, musically, and feature wise, because I wanted two footswitches to switch from clean to an overdrive that was good for leads and rhythm. I also have a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay and wanted to use some overdrive or a clean boost without overshadowing the delay. The GT-500 has exactly that. The tonal combinations are endless. The knobs and controls are very user friendly, and everything is easy to see. I love the EQ; it really allows you to dial in your sound just right. I have spent a good amount of time with this thing I have played it alongside other pedals like Z-Vex?s Fuzz Factory, Box of Rock, and Visual Sound?s Jekyll and Hyde, running all of them through a Marshall MG 30 and a Gibson SG special Faded (my guitar of choice). The GT-500 achieves the sounds of all these pedals but in a smoother, warmer and more musical way. The other pedals had either too much treble or too much buzz for me. I play a fairly wide range of music and the GT-500 covers all of it. On the Booster/OD side with the bass and treble knobs at 12 o?clock or 2 o?clock and the volume at about 9 o?clock and the drive at 7, keeping the setting at boost before distortion the whole time, I got a nice, sparkly clean boost and a retro sounding soiled boost. When I clicked the Distortion side on keeping the volume at 9 and the distortion at 12-5 and the bass at 12 the treble at 12 and the mids at 12 or 2 I got everything from sweet, creamy, singing, southern rock leads, to scorching arena rock solos, fat and punchy power chords, thick palm muting, and bone crushing hard rock, this pedal does them all as smoothly as a knife cutting through butter. I know that sounds clich, but it?s the truth. It has beautiful sustain, treble, warmth and musicality. This pedal really does have what its name says ?Fulltone?, thick, full, warm, rich, tone. Fulltone has really gotten it right.
