I have score it overall as a ten. It's a heck of an amp for the money. I can't find anything I don't really like about it other than that plastic grille. A lot of users talk about how amazingly loud it is for it's size but I'll give it kudos on the other end. I practice at very low volume and unlike some amps you don't need to crank in volume to get great tone. It sounds just as clear and tight at a whisper as it does cranked to 80%. To me that's a good design. The other thing I like is that with the tone contols set flat and without activating the contour it sounds great with my Jazz Bass. Given the range of tonality I get from the bass paired with this amp there very little unexplored tonal territory I can't cover or a style I couldn't play in using just this setup plugged straight in. In my opinion GK has themselves real a winner in these MB series bass amps. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to another bassist looking for the same things I was.
Just one gripe and that's only that I would prefer the direct out to be pre EQ and Gain. Other than that the simplicity of the tone controls make dialing in your sound a breeze. It's very light yet well built and it's sound belies it's weight. That's not lightweight at all. If I was going to add to the features without adding much cost I would design a pair of recessed legs so that it could be set in a kickback position as a stage monitor when playing through sound reinforcement. Make those two changes and nothing would compare to this amp in this price range.
As well built as I've come to expect from a GK product. Well protected in shipping and easy to remove plug in and play. It was as advertised and what I expected right out of the box. The only thing I can knock it down for is the plastic grille cover. I doubt metal would have added more than a couple of pounds if that and the speaker protection would be better. A sharp blow that might pierce and/or shatter the plastic would probably be absorbed by a metal grille or at most simply bent.
This is where I'd have to score it highest. It's hard to believe a GK product this nice sells for this price. It may not be a 500w plus amp but that same classic GK tone is there, just with less volume. There's really no way anyone looking for a small, lightweight amp could go wrong here. It's about as perfect a practice and rehersal amp as you could ever ask for yet it still has enough power to tackle gigs in small venues or where you'd be playing with sound reinforcement where it could be the perfect stage monitor. If you need more you can pickup one of it's bigger brothers as separates or the MB 212 version. What these amps offer in this price range is pretty incredible.

I am very deceived by the poor reliability of this product.
The features set of the Gallien Krueger MB112 is good, and even excellent considering the price.
I would have preferred a pre gain pre eq DI, as indicated in the user manual, but in fact the DI is post gain post eq. I asked the manufacturer, he said that indeed at the beginning the DI was pre gain pre eq, but he decided to change to post gain post eq. He did not explain why.
The first unit I got made no sound at all. In fact the DI and the headphone were OK, but the loudspeaker was absolutely silent. And the power switch had a strong tendency to remain on the "on" state, meaning you have to press it several times to change from "on" to "off".
The second unit I got made some sound, but extremely tiny, as if the loudspeaker was connected to a headphone amp! And there was a big part inside that was loose (I wonder if the loudspeaker has lost its magnet?).
I did not try a third one.
I cannot give a value. On the paper the value is enormous. In real life the two units I got had no value at all.

Another Great GK Product

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

First off from a practicality standpoint, I wanted an amp to learn songs on so you can plug in an MP3 player, put on the headphones and play away with what I consider to be a great headphone amp. You cannot control the level of the MP3 player, you have to do that from your IPOD and the tone is unaffected. I think the sound on the headphone amp is great, really reproduces the GK tones wonderfully (you need decent headphones). Still on practicality, this amp is small, takes up very little room, gets fairly loud and delivers great tone. I love the way this amp sounds. I use a little Sansamp stomp box with it and it sounds great but the amp by itself unaffected gets a great, pro tone. I like the portability in case I want to use it for a small gig or lite rehearsal. The amp seems sturdy and looks like it will last a long time. I had a GK from the late 1980's that I recently sold for top dollar and the thing was built like a tank. No issues there. So to sum it up, practical, portable, great tone, multiple applications, inexpensive. What are you waiting for?
Great Headphone amp. Countour gives great tone, DI (gave a 9 because ergonomically it's not perfect) very portable and sounds incredible.
GK makes great gear.
Totally reasonable price for what you're getting. Worth every penn

Love It!

By Gary Shaw

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I am very satisfied with this amp's looks, quality, features, and sound. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, high quality, lighweight bass amp. I would love to have a bigger one in the future if the need arises...
I bought this amp based on it being American made, and because the other reviews were favorable. I have never heard one of these till I bought this one. I love the line in feature, the looks, and the light weight. My Yamaha sounds pretty good plugged into this gem. The MB112 has a signature "dry growl" sound to it, which I really like. I haven't got to play it live anywhere (besides our house), but with 200 watts, it should put out enough sound. It can be plugged into a sound system with the XLR input which I haven't tried yet.
The quality seems great. The knobs just "feel " good when you turn them, it's USA made and seems to be a nice unit.
It's a little pricier than some, and doesn't have different amp models built in, but I feel like it's a quality amp that it will last me a while, and you know, you get what you pay for....

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I was very satisfied with my amp right out the box. It was light and when I plugged it in, I was amazed at how clear the sound was. For the amp to be so small it is very powerful. I was upstairs in my bedroom and my wife told me she heard the amp rattling her crystal figurines downstairs. Again I am very pleased with my purchase.

Love it, Love it, Love it !!!
I've been playing over 40 yrs and have owned everything from the original SVT's to GK to SWR, etc. I bought this on a whim and I'm blown away. It is really LOUD and it will hold it's own even with a loud drummer. My other amps will be collecting alot of dust. At 28lbs, GREAT TONE, and enough volume for almost any gig....amazing!!
Crossing my fingers. Seems like if you treat it well it should last.
You can't get this tone, this weight, and this volume for this kind of $$ anywhere!!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I already own 4 other bass amps of a variety of sizes and power, but all have one thing in common, and that is that they are all heavy! In the past small and lightweight meant poor sound. Not anymore! I cannot believe the sound that comes out of this combo amp! Makes both my old P-bass and my Jazz bass sound just like they are supposed to! And it potential volume is amazing for an amp this size! And did I mention just how lightweight it is?? Loving it!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

GK has done an excelent job of quality at an affordable price. It looks good, sounds great, and is light enough for an old man to handle with ease. I play small shows and this amp is perfect. It sounds much better than my Ampeg in the same size and wattage. Best of all it's made in the USA.
It also has a line out if you play larger venues.

Ask me a question

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I give it a 7, I'm not knocked out over this amp but satisfied.
I've owned this model now for 3 mo so the honeymoon period is over and can give my experience with the amp. I've been playing many years and have owned SVT from the 70's, Eden, Fender Tube and GK.

I think it's a good amp. I'm not crazy about the tone (using jazz passive, one bass has seymor duncan quarter pounders) Maybe I'm not a GK fan, when I owned my GK's before in the 80's, it seems like I was always tweaking. This one I tried several settings and went with what was acceptable. To me there is no crunch like I had with my Eden which was easy to dial in. It reminds me of going direct into a mixing board. Also keep in mind I use flat wound strings so the roundwound guys may be getting a whole different experince.

Now with that said it gets a great stand up (double bass) sound. It's like once the band starts playing the tone actually seems better if that makes sense, you definately have a bass presence and it's plenty lound which is amazing for such a small amp. It's very light also which I do like about it. Bass in one hand and amp in the other and I'm out the door. I've even used it on an outside gig and it worked. As long as the guitar player is not cranking through 4 12's it can usually keep up which is good. I'm sure 2 of these would handle most stages and the house would take care of the rest.

I hear the 15 inch model has the master which may help the tone. So for an overall review on this I give it a thumbs up because it's loud and light for not much money considering you get amp and speaker. That's very hard to beat. I think I'm going to pick up another brand combo to use along with it for bigger gigs so I can have more options on tone. I've always like running 2 heads anyway so I can live with the tone of this amp

Not Just A Practice Amp

By El Duderino

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I had been looking for a smaller combo to use for small-to-medium gigs, but didn't want to sacrifice tone for portability. I also was not in a position to drop $700 or more on a rig at this time, like the Ibanez Promethean or a MarkBass combo.

After trying the Orange Crush 50 and finding it lacking in the bottom end, I got to try the Ampeg 50w 12" combo and this GK MB112. I'm really glad I played the Ampeg first, because it sounded pretty good, but when I switched over to the GK I could not believe my ears. IT WAS BASS! REAL BASS! Thick, juicy low end from a featherweight combo? I had to have it, and I've been loving it ever since. I don't have a 5-string, but do have a Hipshot on the E string, and it has no trouble with the low D.
Having an XLR Direct Out to send to the house PA for larger gigs was very hard to find in this price range, and the 4-band EQ is easy and intuitive.
Being lightweight could easily make this thing feel like a toy, but it's quite solid.
Hard to find this kind of performance in this price range - particularly in a 12" combo!

I have been looking for a 1x12 practice amp for awhile and have been waiting for this amp...I have tried other major companies with 1x12 and for some reason or another, wasnt happy with them...this GK 1x12 handles my Norday and Spector B string with ease and sounds very good!! I can turn it down and still get a good sound and not worry about blasting my neighbors in my condo, and turn it up and get decent volumes that soundes great and holds its own with the bands drummer!! very happy with this amp, very reasonable price and quality product!!

Great Little Amp

By Desert Rat

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I'm thrilled. I thought this kind of bass only came in a 15" loudspeaker. The web photo on this site shows a rear panel with no fan. The one I just got has a small fan like the MB115 but so far it either has not needed to come on or is so quiet you cannot hear it.

One of the reviews complained about a plastic grill. The unit I received has a metal grill - very nice. Haven't tested the direct out for noise level yet. The owners manual shows it as pre-eq and pre-gain, which is as it should be.

The MB115 15" combo has 3 more features for only a bit more money - field-effect transistor front end for more tube-like sound, a tweeter horn with disconnect switch and a switchable limiter. I really wanted the smaller size and weight and a 12" has better mid-top end than a 15" so I don't miss the horn. So far I can't hear the limiter so don't feel the need to have it be switchable. I can't imagine any more amp for the money. It's a great deal.

Nice Amp, but the DI is Backwards!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I do recommend this amp for its small foorprint high power combination. However, I am disappointed in the DI which is installed the wrong way and lacks a ground lift. I also think the minor grill rattle could have been avoided.
Nice simple controls without a tone of knobs that cause confusion. The DI lacks a Ground Lift and is also installed backwards. The problem with the DI is that once the XLR cable is inserted, the release latch is up against the lip of the cabinet and you cannot remove it with your fingers. You will need a key or coaster or whatever you can find to slip between the cable and the lip of the cabinet to pop the release latch on the XLR cable. This is a design flaw. A Ground Lift shoud also be there.

Great headphone jack an AUX input - very useful for practicing.
Very nice, solid amp with smooth controls. I do notice a bit of grill rattle at higher volumes. A cushioned spaced on the grill would have been nice. It could be the plastic GK logo on the grill.
It's a huge value for a small powerful amp. It's incredible how light and loud it is. It is definitely usable for small-medium size gigs. I got this before they raised the price. However, it's still a good value!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I used to own an MB210 combo, the bigger cousin to this amp. It was a godsend because of its lightness, but I found that I rarely used all its power. If I needed to turn it up, I'd be running into a front of house PA anyhow. So I decided to down-size to this amp, and I am glad that I did. It still gets the job done for small and mid sized gigs and rehearsals, and it's even lighter. There are only three complaints:1. No tweeter. I go for an old school classic rock sound, so this is not a problem for me. But if you're a slapper or want a more modern sound you might miss it.2. No limiter. The MB210 had this, and it was nice, but on the other hand you'd have to work really hard to blow this amp. If you're going to pop and slap, bring a compressor/limiter pedal.3. No ground lift. This is the ONLY fatal flaw to making this the perfect amp. If you encounter hum, there's nothing you can do about it. Because of this I pack a spare DI box with a ground lift in my gig bag in case the hum is so bad I need to run direct. But those are quibbles. You can't have everything for [$], now can you? But you can have 99.9 percent of what you need with this amp, and that's awesome!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB112 200W 1x12 Ultra Light Bass Combo Amp:

I'd say this amp does a great job for the amount of money paid. I'm using it with an upright bass connected with a pickup. Satisfied from that respective. I just wish the cabine is even smaller in size. Everything else is very good.
I have been waiting on this amp from researcing online for a while. I'm looking for a small, light weight amp with big, solid sound. I'd say this amp is light and does have big, sound sound (tried it playing small gigs, but not yet with a larger group). But, it's not small compare to other small sized amps! It's not huge, but it is a little bigger than expected. (Sorry, I didn't go measure the dimensions before purchasing; maybe I should have).

As for features, I'd wish it gives me at leaset one external speaker output.
Decent quality; although, compare to the cabinets from (say) Markbass, it's a little shotty. Certainly not bad.
Excellent value for the amp and how much paid. Very cool.

When this amp arrived, I immediately plugged it in. The speaker was blown. I was shocked, for I've purchased used equipment from MF before with no problems. The rating said it was in near mint condition. The customer service was great. They had my return postage and paperwork done in a few minutes. I have become leary of buying used equipment now and have since purchased a new bass amp.
