I use this amp with an active, five-string electric and an upright bass. With the electric I engage the 14dB pad to prevent overloading. It handles a loud, low-B string without bottoming out the speaker. The eq is very powerful and not much, if any, tweaking is required--the amp sounds great with the eq set flat. With the limiter on and full up, this amp goes very, very loud without overloading. I just really like the sound and punch from this 100W transformer-based amp vs. higher-Watt-rated, SMPS/Class D amps. For the upright, I run a Shure Beta-57 (wrapped in a cloth under the tailpiece) through a Shure transformer-adapter (balanced to 1/4" unbal.), roll of the treble and high-mids a little, and get plenty of volume for coffeehouse gigs (I don't like piezos). It is quiet, very small, and at 26 pounds it is easy to transport. Highly recommended.

This amplifier is well built, portable, and loud; but it is also very limited in tone. The tones are either muddy or chirpy. There seems to be no high mid response and very undefined low mids. The highs are brittle and harsh. These symptonms worsen as you increase the volume. I have used a german Warwick Corvette, MIM Fender Jazz, and MIA Fender P with this amp and have yielded similar results. If you are looking for something portable with similar wattage, I would recommend something with more speaker like a 2x10", 1x15", etc. You will have more headroom throughout the frequency range.

    great upright amp

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

This amp seems like it was made for upright bass. With this amp I can drive a big band, any size combo, and it even gives great full tone while bowing. It will boom in the low register without clipping, and without changing your EQ it will give you sweet, punchy tone in the high register, and it is incredibly portable and roadworthy. Anybody considering an amp for upright gigs should consider this piece of equipment.

Transformed my junky Don't mess with the others, if your a bass switcher from upright to electric this is the tool for you! I run mine with the Conture switch out for electric and in for upright. I found that out he first week it will cause it to sound like two different amps. BUY IT!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

I have had this amp for about 6 years. Not only does it sound great its light and super portable. This amp was left in a basement during a hurricane and was under 6ft of water before I found it again. My other equipment there was destroyed. Took it into the shop for a clean up and its been running fine for the last four years. Mackie board and Carvin PA were DOA while this little gem was the only survivor.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

I just started to learn the upright bass (mine is electric - NXdesigns) and after some research determined that GK was the preferred amp for upright players. At first I ordered the MB112 and while it was fairly small, it had an echo and hiss that drove me nuts. I worked with GK's support but was never able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. Upon deeper research the MB150 microbass kept popping up on bass forums, but the hefty price tag was making me hesitate. However, when I thought about how I payed for my bass, I figured I should get a better amp. So I exchanged the MB112 in and ordered this one. It is fantastic! No hiss, no echo and sounds so smooth. Highly recommend for all upright bass players.

Nobody can believe the amount of sound this little amp puts out. I almost never need anything else, and when I do, sound guys love it 'cause it has both a direct and a line out. Now I show up at gigs with my bass on my back, my amp on my shoulder, and my effects rack in my hand - one trip!

An awesome amp. I play flamenco fusion music with a Godin fretless 5-string bass and Ergo elctric upright 5 string bass. My bandmates complimented me on my sound, but did not realize I got a new amp. Since I made the switch, they (and I as well) love my tone. This amp has excellent features for getting a really fat lo-end good for reggae, to a punchy mid-range "jaco-esque" tone, to treble

If you're looking for a light portable bass amp that's easy to use and has great sound, I'd recommend this highly. Of course, this isn't an Ampeg 8X10, but it's amply loud for rehearsals and small gigs, and you can always go through the PA for larger venues. My past rigs have been Eden and Mark, but looking to lighten the load, I decided to try the GK. Construction is excellent and hopefully durability will be as well. Time will tell.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

I have used this amp for over 10 years and have been very satisfied with it's performance. I use a 6-string bass most of the time and play in relatively small clubs. The graphic EQ is really helpful to shape the sound and with an all-metal cabinet, it really holds up to the real world. It is a little weak when pushing the volume on the sixth string, but that's when the EQ can help out. (You can always set it on a 15" cabinet if needed. Very impressive piece of equipment!

this amp is great for upright bass. i use it as a practice amp with the limiter, for jams and i turn off the speaker and use the head for recording. also good for electric bass and even my acoustic-electric guitar sounds good through it. super portable, especially with gig bag, which is great when you are already wheeling a big bass around.

          Small body, big heart

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

I've owned the GK MB150S for almost 2 years now. I loved it then, I still love it now. At first I wanted to get a different combo with more power, but I opted to go for portability over pounds and power, and I?m so glad I did. This little guy produces a gorgeous, powerful tone (a lot more than I expected), and the controls give me a wide range of versatility. For a lighter set or a smaller venue, this box was perfect. But once the drummer walked in, I knew this amp would not suffice for long. Though it sounds great, it?s simply not powerful enough to keep up with a rock band. So I eventually purchased a GK 700RB head and an Ampeg B-410 HLF cab, and I was able to keep up. But, to tell the truth, I still don?t use that rig nearly as much as I use my micro-bass amp. The light, tough metal body makes it my day-to-day warrior. I?ve stacked it, packed it, slammed it, scratched it, thrown it in my trunk countless times (with just one hand), and it still does the job beautifully. I still get more compliments on this amp than I do on my big rig. They expect great sound from a half-stack, but they are always surprised by what they hear from my micro-bass amp. I fully expect to hand this one down to my children someday.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112III 150W MicroBass Combo Amp:

Think of this original micro combo as the bass amp analog to Fender's Tele: Other gear has other features, some you might prefer, some not, but it's really all here. Solidly built, light, portable, insensitive to rough housing, loud, throaty, flexible, modern sounding, good with electric bass, even better with uptright; flexible, you bet. Run it alone or drive itself and an 8 ohm cabinet. It's usually enough on its own. This is a must have for any bassists. Plus, multiple DI/outputs.

I absolutely love this amp. My upright bass never sounded so good as when run through this amp. My electric even sounds very solid. In the recording studio, I have run my electric bass through the amp and then miked the amp. The sound is outstanding. It is so small and light, I was almost disappointed when I bought the amp, but once I played it, game over! I get nothing but compliments about how good my upright sounds through this amp!

I love this amp. I never thought I would find a bass amp this small that sounded decent much less as great as this one sounds! I have used it in studios just for the DI and on stages of all sizes. I use it with my upright, acoustic, and electric basses. They all sound great. I also use the optional 12" extension speaker to access the full 150w when I want to really rock the house.
