The Good: Solid German amp engineering and build quality, very usable and adjustable effects that sound really good, it's loud, cool looking, has great programmability options, the foot switch is included, and has 4 very different sounding preamp selections all with a nice tube tone. The Neutral: The lead channel compresses quite a bit when driven hard. I like some compression but this amount reduces cutting power. Maybe I need to tweak it some more. Noise on high gain channels is substantial so I use a noise suppressor, but duh, H&K makes wicked high gain amps so what else would you expect? The Not as Good: No built in tuner, line out, or switchable boost or mute so I have to carry a boost pedal and tuner in addition to the noise suppressor. I have trouble getting enough clean headroom. It's heavy and needs side handles. It's large for a 1X12 combo. Foot switches have a bad track record; mine broke but they sent a replacement pronto. The Summary: If H&K wants this to be a self contained gigger's amp then add a built in tuner, line out, and switchable boost and mute. But as it is it's an awesome amp that I'm proud to own.

I purchased this amp after hearing how amazing the sound and capability was and was very happy with everything until about two months later in the middle of an important gig, the amp quit working completely and ruined an otherwise great day. It was sent back to the factory and was replaced with a new one that somehow didn't have all the factory presets intact and had to manualy replace them. Needless to say after about 6 months, the same thing happened to the next amp in the middle of a gig. The bummer is that now they are distributed by a different corporation that won't honor the previous company's warranty.Thank goodness the music store I purchased it through refunded my cash and I bought a JSX Peavey combo that has been more than great and dependable for me. So beware of this particular amplifier although it had supreme tone and versatility in my opinion, the unreliability outweighed the great sound.

Pure tube tone, modeling flexibility

By Cameron-LHQDg

from Fort Collins, CO

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

I was interested in the Switchblade about a year or two ago when it first came out, but was sceptical about if it was really a tube amp because I only saw 2 12AX7's in there where as most high gain amps will have 4 or 5. But this week I grabbed one at an amazing price on an impulse and I don't regret it. Nothing Solid State about this thing! H&K is my new best friend, There's nothing but tube tone in there. I upgraded from a Spider Valve and the biggest up from a modeling amp is a true tube amp has amazing articulation of notes, modeling amps tend to mud up with high gain sounds. When you turn up the gain on the lead and ultra channel's you don't get more fizz like you would in a 6505 where more gain just means white noise. the more you up the gain, the more sustain you get, the tone doesn't change at all! Now I gave it 4 stars for quality for 2 reasons, rumor has it the footswitch is crummy, and if you have issues with the amp crapping out by all means try replacing the footswitch before selling the amp. And second, to change tubes there's no backplate to take off, you have to remove the preamp chassis via 4 screws on top of the amp, no biggie, just a hassle. There is no such thing as a bad H&K amp, get this one!

USER FRIENDLY COMBO!!

By Anonymous

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

I have been playing for 25 years and this is the best piece of equipment that I own. I don't consider myself a tone perfectionist nor a boutique amp aficionado but simply put--this amp covers the range for me. I love the clean tones and the range of blues crunch to obnoxious distortion. I play Strats with EMG SA PUPs and a Les Paul Standard. I use the combo by itself to practice and as a head with an extension cab for gigs. The only drawback is the parameter control of the modulation effects is limited but adequate. The best feature is the simple to use pedal board.

My final Amp

By Tom Edmunds

from Columbia, SC

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

I've been playing professionally for over 20 years. I've played a number of amps, and this one is simply perfect for me. My band PLays music from the late 70's through today, plus some originals. The first time I plugged it in, I noticed the midi box had a short in it. I e-mailed Hughes and Kettner, and within 20 minutes, I had a response and received a new pedal 2 days later totally free! What Service! I play Carvin guitars, and they sound phenomenal through this amp. The first time I really played with it, I was hooked. We had a recent gig for about 500 or so people, and countless friends came up to say that I'd never sounded better. Easily programmable, fantastic tone, bite, and shimmering cleans with plenty of mustard when you need it. I simply love this amp! Can't say enough.

Look before you leap..

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

The amp will do what it is advertised to do, but after spending several hours with it I found the tone of it very displeasing. I am currently using a Rivera R-55 and have owned several Marshalls in the past. This amp to me is way too harsh sounding and no matter which knob I turned, it seemed I would have to add a bunch of effects to try and get rid of the harshness if possible at all. In spite of the EL-34 tubes, I could not get any sounds that reminded me of a the warmth of a Marshall or Rivera. But if you want something that is loud, harsh and guaranteed to fry your eardrums then this amp is a good candidate. This testing was done straight out of the box using 2 different high end Les Pauls. I also noted that I could not replicate the quality of sound found on the H/K website sound samples. I found the amp to be quite noisy with hiss and with lots of feedback if you tried to turn the gain up to higher distortion levels. If you buy this amp be prepared to use EQ and noise suppression devices. I would not recommend this amp to anyone except under the conditions that they could return it. While I haven't tested a Marshall in a long time, I would suggest that users also look for a Marshall combo in this price range and possibly manage your sounds with a multi-effects unit. And if you can afford the price, you might be able to find the same functionality with other combinations while getting better tone from your gear.

This is a great amp

By axisdenied

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

This amp is awesome for the gigging musician. You get TONS of good sounds, all recallable via footswitch. The sounds are VERY good - not high-end boutique-quality, but plenty adequate for gigs. Saving and recalling patches is simple. It's not the loudest 50 watts, but it holds its own with my band. The closed-back design makes it sound more like a sealed cab than most combos.I can't believe more companies haven't done this, but I love H&K for creating this tube amp with digital controls. Considering how many tones you can easily access during a show, the price for this amp is absolutely reasonable. I'm so glad I bought one.

Little Monster!!

By Rare Form

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

I was blown away by the tone of this little amp. It is versitile and has great tone. I own the Triamp MK II as well as my main rig. This was bought as a practice amp and to use at small gigs. This is the perfect little brother of the Triamp and with its onboard effects and programability, makes it a sinch to haul around. Don't let its small size fool you. This thing really kicks and is loud and punchy and full of tone. The effects are good, not great, but good enough. The included foot pedal works fantastic. Seemless switching. This is no 4x12, but it unbelievably can come close considering it is only a 1x12. Very cool amp indeed. I have other H&K products and these things are built very well and with great precision. If you are looking for a little combo that does not compromise in tone, this is it!

worth it..a good buy!!

By Jay-u9jUv

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

New to this amp, I was impressed with the quality. Having just made the decision to NOT buy a 2500 boutique amp in lieu of some other cheaper combo, I wasn't sure what to go with. This amp is a bit complicated in the learning curve for someone like me who isn't all that bright when it comes to anything midi related. I bought it mainly because it sounded great and I could feel and hear the potential..once I learned how it all worked. It's really a cool piece and definitely worth the money for what you get and what it can do. It practically has a roland gt-5 guitar effects processor (from the mid 1990's)built in, which if purchsed separately would be 4 to 5 hundred by itself. It's definitely loud enough and definitely tube-sounding..in all settings. It makes a great stage piece because you can set everything and just use the footswitch and get rid of all the other pedals etc. The effects are top notch and don't take away from the tube characteristics. My only concern is that as of yet, I haven't been able to get a CRYSTAL CLEAR, fender clean out of it. I know it's in there somewhere!! On the other side, it sounds simply awesome overdriven. Definitely you can get a marshall and a boogie, soldano, vox, basically all of 'em are in this combo. I can't wait to get this thing on stage. With the 4 separate channels--what a god-send.

As good as it gets

By PRS Player

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 50 1x12 Combo:

I first heard of H&K amps when I saw Alex Lifeson using them onstage. "OOooo, look at the pretty glow," was my first thought. But as good as his amps looked, I was willing to give up the glow to save a couple of grand. So what do you get for the money with the Switchblade 50? A truly outstanding little amp with an amazing array of all-tube tones, complete with built-in effects that sound fantastic.Sure, it's an expensive amp, but it's not overpriced when compared to a Mesa or other high-end combo. Plus, this amp gives you the ability to store your gain, tone, and effects settings and recall them with a stomp on the footswitch! The amp also looks great. From the sparkly grill cloth, to the brushed aluminum-looking logo, to the shiny chrome knobs, it's an eye-catcher (despite the non-glowing front panel). Oh, and did I mention that it's loud? This is German engineering at its best: innovative, beautiful, and great at what it does.
