OVERVIEW

A touch of a button is all it takes to conjure up to 128 combinations.

The Hughes and Kettner TubeMeister 36 guitar amplifier head offers independent gain and master knobs, as well as switchable FX Loop. In addition, Mr. Hughes and Mr. Kettner built in a MIDI system to access the three channels, FX loop and onboard reverb. It can even select the power stages of the integrated power soak (36W, 18W, 5W, 1W and Speaker Off)!

The revolutionary MIDI-controlled power soak can do some wild voicing tricks. Tap its full dynamic range by running the Clean channel at 36W and switch over to the Crunch channel in 5W mode with the Master knob wide open to get good and grungy with some grinding rhythm. Or you could run the Lead channel at 18W for some high-gain riffage and switch over in a flash to the full 36W for a screaming solo. Meanwhile, the 1W option brings the sound of the big stage into your own four walls, without any tonal compromises.

The built-in RED BOX feeds preamp and true power amp tone straight to a stage or studio mixing console. It authentically emulates the sound of a 4 x 12" cab and delivers a balanced line signal to the Speaker Out for use in rehearsal rooms, on stage, and even to pipe that sweet tube-driven sound straight into the PA. In combination with the power soak's silent recording option (Speaker Off), the RED BOX lets you lay down professional-quality tracks any time day or night. You can even feed the signal to in-ear monitors on stage without having to fuss with a cab or mic.

But that's still not all; there's also the wonderful TSC (Tube Safety Control). It is an automated system that constantly monitors and readjusts the bias to ensure power tubes operate reliably and deliver to-die-for tone, always. With the TSC, swapping tubes couldn't be any easier.

Channel two died on the second day. Muscian's Friend was great about the exchange and had a new one to me quickly. This amp has super cleans with a seperate eq, a great crunch channel with a seperate channel, and the lead channel is just perfect (even though it shares the EQ from the crunch channel it has a tone shift to it.) all 3 channels have seperate gain and master volumes. It is lighweight, has a carry/gig bag, the tubes auto bias and with a guitar pick you check the tubes "health" , it also lets you know what tubes are starting to go weak , the number "grade" of the tubes you need to replace them with.
Led switches on the back for 36/18/5/silent mode.
Using a F/S works well , I like the midi funtion F/S , you can set the channel , the reverb, the effects loop, and the power wattage and store that in the midi pedal. I use three settings clean \,crunch,and lead, then 4 variations of each. A Tech 21 Midi mouse works perfectly for me ,I know 1-3,4-6,7-9,10-12
are three different settings of clean , crunch , lead, simple and effective.

I have had to return this amp twice now in a six month period. What a hassle. I don't have money to blow on shipping this thing to New York from California twice a year. I really like the set of features this amp has but i'ts not reliable and its too bright and the distortion is fizzy, even after break in. I'ts getting turned in for a Laney Ironheart.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is honestly the best amp I've ever played.

The 3 channels are great and works for all my guitars. From Archtops, Les Pauls and Strats. My Danelectro Baritone also sounds great with it.

It can go anywhere from the nice Fender clean all the way to metal if desired. I mainly use it from clean to classic/hard rock tones.

The MIDI function is great. I'm using a Tech 21 Midi Moose with it. You can pre-program the power attenuator, reverb, and fx loop. I use the Clean for the Fender sound, then for the crunch/lead I turn the reverb off and use the gain to my taste. But you can program tons of different "patches" for different songs and ideas.

I also like the Tube Bias Control. This ensures that the tubes are working to their fullest potential and it's very easy to change the tubes. Just pull them out and put them in. As easy as that.

This amp is such a steal. Sure beats buying a high end Fender or Marshall stack. I use it with the Hughes & Kettner 112 Cab and that works great. It will work in any setting like it states. Home, studio, and live. It covers all those so well. Of course it sounds better cranked but even at 1watt it sounds great.

All in all, unless a find a better amp in my lifetime I would be happy with this for the rest of my life.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have been playing professionally for over 40 years and have tried dozens of amps over the years. My preference in sound: bell-like/chimy clean sounds with two level of overdrive all at the touch of a footswitch for live playing. This does it. DEFINITELY buy the footswitch if you are going to use this live. My favorite guitar sounds...think Duane "Live at the Filmore". I have a Suhr Badger 18 watt which sounds great, but with no footswitching, it is good for studio work only, as I do NOT like to use pedals to achieve distorted sounds. Also the Badger just doesn't have enough headroom for clean (I play through a 4/12" vintage Marshall greenback cab--yeah that helps!) at only 18 watts. So, with the Tubemeister, I can select full 36 watts for clean and 18 watts for the crunch and lead channels (or 18 watts clean and 10 watts for the distortion channels in small gigs). What is the sound like? Try a Marshall 50 Watt plexi cranked to 10, but without killing people. Actually, I like this better! More gain can be had, if you want it. If you think you need more than 36 watts, mic it. I can manipulate it enough to sound great with both my Les Paul and my Strat. I am completely enamored with this little head AND it is so easy to carry around. The effects loop works well with my Fx pedals. The reverb is remarkably good for a non-spring. My only complaint: the tone controls don't have as wide of a range of change as I would prefer.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The last time I owned a Hughes & Kettner was the original Triamp. I loved the amp but it was super loud. For the money this amp is just awesome. Reverb works great and all the options it has make it a bargain. Great little Carry bag and this amp can easily play any small venue. You also have the ability to change wattages which is great as well.

I have been really impressed with this little amp, and it will not let you down. The Red Box out allows you to go straight to the PA as well as the ability to record with no speaker load. I have several amp and amps that cost way more than this one, but for the money this is hands down a stellar purchase.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have played for over 30 years and am a Marshall guy from way back ('79 100W MKII, TSL100, 1960AV, etc), but I rarely wanted to lug my TSL100 Head & 4X12 to club shows.

The TubeMeister has waaaay better cleans than Marshall and a sweet distortion – more "modern" sounding than Marshall - in a good way. Not saying one distortion is better than the other – they are different and I enjoy them both. Side story - Early on, when I got the TM36H, my bass player actually stopped playing just to listen to some bluesy, mellow riffing I was doing on the clean channel because it sounded so good – and so much better than my other rigs. I constantly get compliments on my sound these days w/ the TubeMeister. I typically go straight in – besides using a Crybaby wah occasionally (and occasional chorus and delay). Another reviewer mentioned that he did not like to get distortion from pedals – I couldn't agree more – open up the tubes and let 'em scream! That being said – I have probably used this head more on the 18W setting than the 36W. Great to have the options.

I also bought the TM12 & the H&K 2X12 cabs for this head. As advertised - both are perfect matches for the TM36H. The cabs sound great (bell-like clean tones as well as screaming distortion) and are solidly built.

For quick jams, practice away from home or small shows, the TM12 is great sounding and light. For larger shows, I use the 2X12 (or both cabs – which is a lot of fun and makes for a great looking stack).

I bought the TubeMeister for tone, ease of use (light and easy to pack) and versatility (the TM36H is loaded w/ features – esp for the price point). I have not been disappointed. I've had many good shows w/ this rig and expect many, many more.

Another side note - I find that for my ears, my PRS guitars sound better through the TubeMeister than some my Gibsons and other makes. Very different tones w/ different pick ups & guitars in my experience (I know this is kind of an obvious statement, but it is more so w/ this rig than say w/ my Marshall stacks).

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've had this amp since Hughes & Kettner released it. I bought it case it is midi compatable, and the midi learn function.
on first plugging this in, i loved the clean and crunch. lead fell a bit short, but then i stuck 2 pedals in the fx loop, a boss graphic, and a bbe sonic maximiser pedals. this transformed the whole sound off the beast.
nice fat and beefy. i really love this set up.

now i run a rack through the fx loop, and i am delighted.
the redbox di is amazing. running through a pair of Yamaha powered monitors, and love the cleans, crunches, and leads.

i can't bear to part with it, and its been so reliable since day one, although i did change the valves to high grade valves

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister TM36H 36W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I honestly did not understand that a tube amp can be rated at what I thought was a low wattage number and yet still be powerful. I have been running an old Accoustic 150 head and its 6 10" speakers for well over 20 years. It's LOUD! The Tubemeister is feels like your standing next to the space shuttle on lift off! One thing to be just loud, quite another to be POWERFULL!!! Such a difference in quality of sound between my solid state amp and the tube amp. Even on 1 watt, you can do some serious practicing leaning hard on the gains and it sounds the same as with 36 watts just a light year's less power.
And can you find an amp any where that looks as good as this on or off? What a stage presence it has. Last when you turn a knob, it feels like "quality" the switches made to last forever.

You get what you pay for, and in this case even more. Bad to the Bone!

If you are only wanting to buy ONE amp, this is IT! The Crunch and Lead channels are very good, and I have yet to really dig into them, but what impressed me the most from the get-go is the tone from the Clean channel. I have this feeding my Marshall 4-12 1960 cabinet and Wow! I have been reading other's comments about replacing the tubes, but I can't really say yet if it would be that much better. Guess I will have to try it and see.
