Just the other day I went to a music shop to get a new distortion pedal. I was previously using a cheap one from washburn. From what I saw on the internet, I decided to plug in the Ibanez Ts9, Ibanez ts808, and the MXR drive III. The TS9 gave a 25% more punch when all the gain and drive was up, but highly compressed/muffled the tone. The MXR kept cutting in and out, and lacked tone. The Ts808 gave about 45% more gain to the tone, but generated a ton of hiss to the speakers. I told the guy at the shop the issues at hand, and he pulled out this pedal. I dialed in a good tone and wow, this thing TOTALLY dominated the gain levels. With the mid control, you WILL NOT SCOOP YOUR MIDS! It essentially takes the mid range and sets it between 4-12, then you control from there. It will either boost them or keep them at 25% of what your amp can do. If you're a fan of really high gain (Periphery, Between The Buried and Me, As Blood Runs Black, etc.) DEFINITELY get this pedal. It will not dissapoint.

I pre-ordered this back in February based both on the clips Ibanez had posted online and the buzz from trade shows, expecting this to sound at least somewhat like the demos which showed a flexible pedal that could do mid- to high-gain sounds straddling the line between an overdrive and a distortion. Unfortunately, this is not an apt description of the pedal. Instead, the JD-9 sounds like what I feared it would be essentially a warmed-over Tube Screamer with a little bit higher gain and a mid control (which is its one saving grace). It is a decent-sounding pedal for what it is, but is certainly not the absolute revelation that Ibanez's video demos promise.
Moreover, side-by-side with several other pedals I own (T-Rex DGTM, Option 5 Destination Overdrive II, Barber Tone Pump, among others), there's no comparison every single overdrive pedal I own or have tried seems better to me, both in terms of tone and the price-to-quality ratio. I have no doubt that there are those who would feel differently, but this pedal just didn't do it for me.
This isn't a case of bad equipment making a great pedal sound mediocre I run a Gibson LP Jr. into a British-made Orange AD-15, and my amp loves pedals from boosts to distortions. Instead, it seems this is a case of a mediocre pedal that Ibanez undoubtedly used creative audio editing to turn into something else for their videos.
My advice if you think a Tube Screamer with a mid knob sounds like something you're looking for, then this will do the job. Do not think that this will sound like the demos online it doesn't.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Ibanez Jet Driver is a well built quality guitar pedal that is perfect for playing 1970's Heavy Metal coping sounds from early Judas Priest, Scorpions, UFO, Montrose, and Budgie. This pedal is clear, articulate, loud, and has a very authentic tone. I play Gibson guitars so I do not know how it would sound with single coil pickups. The pedal sounds really, really good with my Les Paul's and SG's. I tried out all the Ibanez and Maxon Tube Screamer pedals and found the Jet Driver was the best sounding out of all of them to me.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Picked up this pedal on a whim about a month ago. I tried it out in the store because I'd never seen this model Ibanez before. VERY smooth overdrive, basically like a ts9 on steroids, except it's also much louder!
I love that the pedal has a mid control on it - makes it extra versatile!
It's extremely sturdy, and not bad to look at on the pedalboard!

My only complaint is that it makes a loud noise when activated, as if there's something loose or the input/output screws are loose. I've read other reviews that have said the same thing. It's not that big a deal playing with a band because you won't hear it over the noise unless you've got a LOT of delay or something like that to make the noise worse.

I'd definitely recommend it to players of all styles that are looking for a very versatile overdrive!

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Just bought this pedal. Essentially I was looking for something similar to my MXR distortion III but with a little more EQ tweakability. This is similar in tone but has the mid knob which is why I bought it. I'd say this is a little less crunchy and a little more smooth/soft clip and a bit brighter. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it yet. I tried this against the plimsoul, the gt500, zvex box of rock, xotic ac and distortion III. I like to use my volume knob on the guitar to go from clean to singing. So far I might like the mxr the best, but I really like the mid knob feature on this. This pedal has ridiculous amounts of boost available. I thought the mxr distortion III had lots of boost - this thing can be stupid loud! Good price - just not sure Its for me quite yet.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I would definitely recommend this pedal to anyone needing a good, solid, rock overdrive sound. It is very responsive, and cleans up well when rolling off the volume or tone knobs on your guitar. It's my go-to overdrive pedal for playing rock music. Two things to note: it is too heavy for blues, and not heavy enough for metal. Keep that in mind for anyone looking for those tones. Other than that, I can't recommend this enough!

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this looking for a little more bass response to a traditional Tube Screamer. It hit the nail on the head. I own a TS Mini that has great reviews, but this box gives me a fuller sound and still allows me to dial out the bass to get more of the nasal midrange if needed. It is built like a tank and weighs almost as much as one (that's a good thing to me). This is a winner of a pedal.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I don't use heavy distortion all that much, but when I do, I wanted something on my pedalboard that I could dial in, leave it and stomp it when I needed it. I bought this pedal on a 'stupid deal of the day' offer and was thrilled. The pedal is built like a tank. I dialed in a distortion setting in about one minute and that was that. Furthermore, I generally dislike mid frequency honkiness and this pedal's mid control did a STUNNING job of cutting that out. I can't say enough about the frequency controls on this pedal. I would have gladly paid the regular price for this gem, and if mine ever gets lost or damaged, I'll order another one in a heartbeat.

An Ibanez TS with more gain and sustain.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I own a lot of Ibanez Tube Screamer's. I bought my TS9 back in 1983 and I have been buying Tube Screamers ever since. I have the TS9, one just called Super Tube from 1985, a TS10 (my favorite), a TS10 (mod by Keeley to 808 spec), TS 5, TS7 (Tone Lok), and now I have the JD9.

This is a nice addition to the TS line. When I gig I use a small pedal board with a TS10 for crunchy rhythm, a TS9 with gain maxed out for leads and if I need a little more sustain and boost I run both them together (TS10 into TS9). The JD9 sounds like this last combo. It sounds like my TS10 and my TS9 run together. Significantly more gain, higher output and more sustain than any TS pedal by itself. Now I run three TS pedals on my little board. Each one is great for it's own sound. The TS9 is for leads that need to cut through and sustain at higher volumes. It's excellent. Also note: all metal construction.

Comments about Ibanez 9 Series JD9 Jet Driver Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got it on a stupid deal . That made it way sweeter. Still , even at list its a good pedal for the money. It does generate a bit of noise though. Not crazy extreme noise but its there at higher gain settings for sure. I will have to agree with some of the other reviewers and say its a TS with a mid control. There are many TS clones and different versions of the original by the original manufacturers and they all sound a little different. Similar , but different. I have never been that overwhelmed with them . Then I heard a band and the guitar player had a similar set up but ran a Jet Driver. And the tone was amazing. I now have that tone when I want it and I'm very happy with the pedal overall... Not a bad tone to be had at any setting. A lot of gain or near clean , its all good . The mid control is a must and it works just as it should. Its a solid buy.
