Man, what a great little amp for money. The quality is certainly good enough. The cabinet is sturdy, the covering rugged and the protective corners appear well made. The 8" speaker is big enough to give you real sound and yet small enough to allow the cabinet to be small. I especially like the fact that this amp has both a gain control and a headphone plug. Those are two things missing on many small tube amps and for me a necessity for a practice/travel amp. I play my Fender Blues Jr a lot and love it's tone. I also really like the tone of the Fender Pro Jr, but it is just a bit too big with the 10" speaker and there is not a headphone plug which makes hotel room practice hard.I've looked long and hard for the right small tube/hybrid amp. I've tried the Crate V5 and V8 Palamino and found them really poor in the gain and tone control department. I felt that they both had a narrow band of 'good' sounds. This little amp sounds and responds much like the Blues Jr in that you can control the gain and get some real decent 'touch' responce from the amp. I play an American Strat with Custom Shop Fat '50 pups and they really work well with this amp. I've tried both a TS-808 and a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver with this amp and they work great also. The gain control on this amp will allow you to dial in a really sweet overdive sound without using pedals if you want. In my opinion, gain control is a must for a decent sounding tube amp at low volumes. This amp does a very creditable job of reproducing sounds from clean thru overdriven fender to early marshall tube tones. I will walk into any small jam with this amp and feel that I can hold my own. This amp can be really loud for it size and while I don't think it would work well in a full jam with a (loud) drummer it sure as heck would get close to it. Miked it would be no problem to use at a small venue. If you plugged this thing into a larger speaker cab I'm sure it would work very well at a gig.The cleans on this amp are good, but of course the headroom is a bit limited so the clean is not really loud and probably not Fender clean, but very close. Again, let me say, the overdrive on this baby is very sweet and controlable. This amp would be wonderful with a Gibson 335 or similar in a small blues or jazz gig no doubt about it.I have not swapped the tube out in this amp, but I'm betting a really good tube will bring out the best of this already great little amp.I'm sure there are other small amps out there that sound better, but not in this price range.BTW This amp looks much better than the photos of it suggest. I can't stand cheezy looking stuff and I am very please with the appearance of this amp.

You should DEFINETLY think about actually trying out an amp before buying it, especially online. First, the distortion on this amp is terrible, you can go as far as soft bluesy music with the gain on, no hard rock or anything. To fix this, I read that using a tungsol 12ax7 to replace the stock tube would help, although this barely helped at all. I tried running my DOD distortion pedal thru it, and it did not work properly, the only tone I could get out of it was an early Black Sabbath sounding tone. All in all, distorted tones are horrible, but, I do think the clean channel is unmatched by anything in it's price range and size. The only other pro I can mention is that theres no buzz or hum while your'e playing. My other amp, the 30 watt Behringer solid state GM110, to me at least, is superior in every way, except the clean channel isn't as good. The Behringer was a bit cheaper as well. If your'e planning on playing even the softest rock ( don't even give this a second though if you're into metal), I suggest you get something else and save your money

Kustom tube 12 amp

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I replaced the ax7 tube with an au7 tube as I am a harp player. With a minimum of reverb and a small delay this amp performs very well. a great value. Do not try to get much gain on the harp. Bass up treble down gain on but way down, good sound.

tube tone for harmonica

By Hobostubs Ashlock

from wagoner oklahoma

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

need that chicago tube tone for harmonica but on a budget. well this is a excellent value. My 1st tube amp and i love it. Got it to go with a fender 15r in a dual harp amp setup. And it works great gives a great low end. to the overall sound. gives me some tube tone needed so the fender15r aint so crispy. And by itsself aint to bad either. has a couple out jacks making it easier to use with a PA. And has a switch for 2 types of amp sounds other than the 2 drives it offers so you in effect have 4 modes of sound to play around with. I highly recomend this amp to the harmonca player on a budget.

Great Harp Amp

By Jeremy Terry

from Helena, MT

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

This makes a great harmonica amplifier! I have been using a Fender Blues Junior (with one 12AU7 in place of one of the 12AX7 tubes) and this amp sounds better! The tone produced by this amp is similar to the vintage harp sounds of Little Walter. The only feature that it doesn't have is reverb, but it doesn't seem to need any.

Very Un-Rad

By BCBD

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I was not impressed with this amp at all. I purchased it about a month ago from the local guitar shop because it seemed like a good deal at the time. Unfortunately, I blew the speaker after a few weeks with never pushing the volume over 4. I used to have a little peavey 8 inch practice amp and that thing was a tank. I would definitely recommend skipping on this amp.

Excellent Little Amp

By Beldar

from Upstate, NY

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I've never added to these reviews but they do help so here goes. This little amp is great. I was a bit suspicious since it is not really a "tube" amp but more of a hybrid. I have a Spider Jam which is great fun but a bit antiseptic so wanted a little tube amp that had that tube tone/feel and didn't cost an arm & a leg. Well, that's what I got. I am very surprised at the tube tone and the bottom end from such a small unit. I play a Epi Les Paul Ultra and an Ibanez RG-350 through it and the RG really pushes the drive to a point where you almost don't need any additional distortion. The clean sound is great. I also purchased a Digitech RP 150 at the same time because I knew this amp would really shine with some reverb & effects and it absolutely does. I only gave the amp a 4 on features bc it does not have reverb. Add reverb and this would be a perfect little amp. This has really been a pleasant surprise for the price and I have a feeling this will become my favorite amp.

Little Barker

By Hairball

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I bought this little amp about 2 years ago. Thing works perfect. Replaced the tube with a jj. Sounds much warmer now. You can get a real classic tube distortion like a marshall plexi out of it. Cleans are nice. Ok, your not going to get a slayer, children of bodem, ect distortion out of it. But distortion is NOT tone. If you want more distorion use a pedal or a preamp. To me this thing has that classic marshall tone that I love. Great little practice amp. Worth the money!

Keep in mind it's a practice amp...

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I bought this amp (and a guitar) for my 8 year old son to have around if he gets the itch to play guitar. I didn't want to break the bank either, which you won't do with this amp. Of course I had to try it out. The more I played it (and experimented with tweaking the knobs) the more I realized you can get some truly great tones out of this amp. An overdriven blues/rock sound is really phat. Metal, not so much with the amp gain, but add a Boss MT-2 and shred away...within reason, a 12" speaker it is not. I also ditched the Chinese tube and experimented with a Groove Tube and a Sovtek. Sovtek really brings out the tube "ambiance". I normally play a Soldano Hot Rod 50 half stack so I do appreciate, and love, good tube tone. I've had this amp for prolly close to a year now. Been playing a no-name semi-hollowbody through it mostly. There was some stuff rattling around inside it (I work it pretty hard) so I took the whole thing apart and tightened all the screws. Made a big difference, but theres still a tiny buzz coming from the enclosed circuit board area. I can hear it when I'm cranking it on the bench, but if it's 3 feet away it gets drowned out by the speaker. Maybe I'll catch that next tune-up.For what it is, a practice amp, you can't really go wrong. Tweakable tube tone, quality speaker and a great price. I would happily recommend this amp to anyone asking.

Just what I needed

By guitarjonny

from Wilmington, DE

Comments about Kustom Tube 12A Practice Amp:

I wanted something small that I could lug around without much fuss and this thing is almost perfect. First of all the desciption doesnt really drive home how TINY this thing is...Less then 12 inches high and wide. That said I cant believe anything this small with an 8 inch speaker can have this much tone and bottom end.I do wish it had reverb but the tone controls are quite usable. I dont really care for the amps overdrive sound but it sounds just fine with my tube screamer. My only issue with it(a minor one) is that it makes a loud pop when you turn it on.For the price you cant beat it...A tube preamp and a celestrion speaker...And it fits in my truck box :)
