Let's face it, if the God's on Mount Olympus wanted delay, they would have used a tape delay. But as someone who has used tape delays live and in the studio, I have learned one very important thing in my years of experience, don't use tape delay's live unless you like living on the edge (not in a good way).
I'm not one of those purists who thinks that digital killed the audio star and that tape was the best format or any of that other nonsense, but tape delays have those remarkable imperfections that create spontaneous sonic magic so I have been chasing that tone in a more relaible format for years. I have a tape delay unit as well as other analog and digital delays (including the Reel Echo) and each has their own unique cool, but my search is pretty much over. I don't think I'm going to get much closer sonically and simply put, I love this pedal. It can re-create pretty much any delay sound I want including my coveted tape delay sound, without worrying if my tape unit made the journey safely. It's durable, the switches are smooth and the unit is big enough to adequately see the controls when playing live. If you write songs, this has the power to inspire some really creative ideas.
There is one legitimate con, which is that it takes up a lot of pedal board space. The unit does sound a bit processed at times and not as natural, but I like that, so if you are a purist, you may find this a problem. Also, if you need exact setting references, there are no LED read outs to guide you (like the new Vox delay, which also sounds more transparent). I've tried the new Vox unit (big Vox fan one of my favorite amps), but, for a delay effect, I am looking for that smooth reliable sound, giving up on the tape benefits live and in certain studio situations.
This unit needs a lot of time to play with and I suggest that you read the manual first like other Line 6 products to really get a full idea of the unit's potential. All in all, this is now the best non-tape delay unit that I own.

It has great delay features. The are all really warm and can fill a room really well with some rich delays. It's easy to use and the tap tempo makes delay time shifts easy on the fly. But I have to knock it for it's durablility. I have had a Ibanez DE7 echo/delay for 3 years and I have had not a single problem with it. All the features are not worth this repeated crap out. Bottom line, it's so frustrating that this thing is such a great pedal and it will just die on you with no warning. I won't be replacing this
Good variety of delays. Looping is easy to use while playing and the 1/2 speed and reverse are nice extras. You can only recall 3 presets at a time but I had the analog, auto volue, and reverse preset in and that covered pretty much everything that I needed. In all honesty I didn't use all of the different types in any practical situation but the ones I had preset were go to, especially the auto volume.
Mine was a refurbished unit bought on discount from the site and it's broken down 2 times in the 5 months I've had it. The first time it got repaired on warranty, but this time it just shot out on me without any incite as to why. It's a sturdy box but the footswitches are kinda fragile and it wouldnt take much to break one. I've heard of these things breaking down easy even if they're brand new, so something to consider.
I enjoyed every second of playing with this unit but I hated everysecond it wasn't working.

Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
I owned this effect pedal for about a week, and though that may not be sufficient enough time spent with this device, it was more than enough time that I wanted spend learning how to operate a delay pedal. Personally this pedal was less impressive than most other pedals. The main reason I was drawn to this device was that it allows you to store up to 4 settings and recall them through the foot switches. However, this was not as simple to do as I had wished.
I would personally recommend a Boss or Line 6 multi effect pedal with delay on it if you wish to switch from one delay to another. Otherwise I would recommend Boss DD7. Most professionals only use one, sometimes two different settings on their delay. Unless you're playing some extremely delay-related music, one or two different delay settings is probably all you need. If this is the case, buy 2 DD7's...it costs about as much as buying this thing, and I believe you would get a better result.

Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
I bought my first Line 6 Delay in 2003. I have played it for thousands of gigs, on top of hours and hours of home and studio use. At live performances, I mainly use the pedal to loop acoustic guitar. Some people may be turned off by the 15 seconds of loop, but all you need to do is start looping with your 1/2 tempo button on, which doubles your loop to around 30 secs.
I've used the line 6 for some studio recording, including looping and harmonizing some electric E-bow parts. I recorded them backwards onto the pedal, then used the Reverse feature. That sounded killer when mixed with another delay and reverb pedal.
I have 4 Line 6 Delays now and I mix and match Delays and loop them both for vocals and guitar. Maybe line6 will eventually make a new pedal where you can use the delay features like the 'Sweep' or 'Ping Pong' while you loop... it would save a ton of space!
I've taken decent care of them considering they do a lot of traveling, have been dropped, rained on, etc. They are heavy and durable. Unfortunately, each pedal has broken a footswitch, which I've had to replace. It was an easy fix... all you needed was a new switch, screwdriver, wrench, and about 30 mins.
This pedal is a must-have, and I recommend trying it out and playing with all of its features before buying a DL-20...hated it!

Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
Im torn in this decision reatures are great line 6 support is terrible, and most people do have problems with this pedal i would look into another pedal that is more reliable. but as of now its a mandatory part of my board
It really can do every thing for the price, With all effects you would possibly need with a medicore record time and great setting
Pretty Miserable, broke in 3 months with extremly light use, had to bring it to a repair store the board was gone, the buttons also get sticky and are weak...
Well the price is really decent, but didnt mention the really confusing power needs it requires. before buying check into what you need. line 6 makes a supply for this that is a good 2 pounds and really not needed. would not recommend one spot
Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
its pretty simple to use if you read the instructions which arent long and boring all is on one small page. but this pedal is awesome. you can even do sweet volume swells , and even get this sweet flanger sounding delay in there. buy it. its worth every cent
best pedal i own as of now. i love it. the hard pedal casing is great!
Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
I all around love this pedal! I think it is super easy to use. I think that if people don't like it then they just haven't spent enough time discovering the features and capabilities of this product
I love the features this has! It is definitely easy to use as well. All of the reviews I read saying it wasn't a great pedal have been proven wrong in my opinion.
I love how tough this thing is.
This is DEFINITELY worth every penny! Wouldn't spend that money on any other Delay pedal!
Comments about Line 6 DL4 Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:
overall, it's just not worth it. i don't own this pedal, but i know many people who do, and have read many reviews on many different sites, and i've used my friends. i own the eventide timefactor and am more than satisfied with it. i would recommend that, but if you don't want to spend that much, then get the boss dd-20.
16 delays including a looper! that's pretty sick, but compared to the boss dd-20 or the eventide timefactor, it still lacks in features.
the switches go bad and it sucks tone. you can go to jhs pedals and get it modded to fix the tone suck, and also get the switches replaced so they don't go bad on you, and also get a tap tempo jack installed and an expression knob installed. but if you're going to spend that kind of money, consider the eventide timefactor
if you're going to spend that much on a delay pedal, consider the dd-20 first. you can go to jhs pedals and get it modded to fix the tone suck, and also get the switches replaced so they don't go bad on you, and also get a tap tempo jack installed and an expression knob installed. but if you're going to spend that kind of money, consider the eventide timefactor

This is nice to work with and I would recommend this to a Friend!
This product is very nice and takes some Patients to get through the adjustments. The only thing I have had Problems with is the Power source! I have gone threw 2 and on my 3rd.! I don't like having to keep buying battery's! lol!
