Comments about Markbass Little Mark III and New York 151 Bass Stack:
I occasionally reinforce small/medium gig sound with my own kick-drum monitor. This sounds MUCH better to the audience than running it just acoustically, or through the portable "café" sound-systems too many bands use these days (small-coned, plastic systems designed for guitar/vocals only). A speaker has to have a 15 inch cone (or larger) to accurately reproduce the solid bassy thud of a kick drum- otherwise you get a ringy midrange mess. For years I had been carrying a beloved Roland KC-550: it sounded great, but was wicked heavy (65 lbs) & had an angled front that made it awkward to carry... Throw in a back injury (equip loading) & I was in the market for a lighter solution to kick monitoring. Thank the god for Markbass! This system is HALF the weight & sounds Soooo much more bassy! I can plug my mic cable (xlr) directly into the amp (no mixer or power-sucking adapter needed) & emulate a huge pro PA sound myself. I angle it behind me to the left- it acts as a monitor & main-reinforcer. The LittleMark III also has an output, so I send the (volume adjustable) signal to the mains. The EQ knobs allow huge adjustment from dry & biting to a full on hip-hop electronic sound (using the "Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator " knob). It sounds great close to the amp, but even better as you get further away- the rear subwoofer ports are magic. I occasionally use a small Mackie sub-mixer to run other drums through as well, but for most club shows, only the kick needs to be reinforced (or the rest I run through the mains). I also use this stack for electric drums- It is pleasingly smooth sounding (the band complimented me the first night), but lacks a little of the high end compared to the KC-550 keyboard amp. This is not a bad thing, they sound more "natural" & less harsh through this amp. I wanted the more powerful (800w) version of this set-up for clarity, punch & headroom, but the price was more than I wanted to spend. I am pleased to say, the 300w seems just fine so far (I typically play it at 1/2 volume- 5 out of 10) for most shows, less for more dynamic bands. The stack is dead quiet (no hum/rattles). I am thrilled. Having a big, bass-heavy kick sound makes the kit & whole band sound better, and allows me to play more dynamically. Overall, it is not about making the kick louder, so much as bassier & bigger sounding. "The Markbass Little Mark III and New York 151 Bass Stack" is a joy to play through. I would buy it again. I recommend the Markbass Small Amplifier bag for the LittleMark III- it has Velcro to stick the amp to the cabinet so it does not bounce off.
