The Marshall Class 5 Head is awesome. This true class A all valve (tube) head excels in tone. When mated to the right speaker/cabinet, you can derive whatever sound you are gunning for. Just remember that it is only 5 watts. If you are driving a 4 x 12 cab, it will only be driving each speaker with 1.25 watts. In saying that, the amp does get loud.
I ran my class 5 head through a meriade of cabinets. Each one changed the voice of the overdrive crunch and the point of break up. Being a huge Thin Lizzy and Marsden/Moody era Whitesnake fan, I prefer that classic Marshall sound. I prefer to run straight into the amp for my sound so matching up a speaker and cabinet was essential. The Epiphone Valve Junior 1x12 Cabinet loaded with a Celestion Greenback does the job in spades. The cabinet is large enough to allow the amp/signal to breathe and not sound constrained. For me, the Greenback is the right voice for the guitar. It can handle everything from jazzy clean to full on rock.
I ran this rig with an SG and a Strat. Both sound awesome through it, however, my Les Paul just sings throught it. With the class 5 head I can play any style. And with this rig, I can capture that Les Paul through a Marshall tone that is synonomous with rock music. I can crank the volume without killing my ears and I am able to record my rig without turning down.
As far as pedals are concerned, this amp does take to them well. At lower volumes you can really hear the effects. I ran a Carbon Copy, Boss CE-2 Chorus, AW-3 Auto Wah and MXR Script Phase pedal through it. Very nice. I have ran several overdrive/distortion pedals too including: Boss DS-1, Boss OD-1, Boss SD-1, Boss BD-2, Electro Harmonic Big Mu*f Tone Wicker and LPB-1. Each brought about everything from old school British Invasion rock to modern metal. Oh, and the ever loveable Cry Baby Wah sounds great through it. As I said, I prefer to play the Les Paul straight into it. I turn the volume up and use the volume knobs on the guitar. I can get a purr to a roar this way. Blues players take heed. If you are a tone purist you will find that you will not need anything else with this amp.
I do recommend this amp. You can get valve (tube) saturation at reasonable levels. It is great for recording, and believe it or not the sound guy will not tell you to turn it down at gigs. This means you will not have to adjust your sound on the fly or compensate your tone. The amp is extremely well built and highly portable, too. Depending on your cab, you won't break your back transporting it to rehearsals and/or gigs.

This is a neat looking amp. But the quality of the insides are poor. Used about an hour with no issues. Then is started cutting off and on. Called Musician's Friend, no help, no answers, must return for credit or replacement. After looking at the inside of head, yikes, no tube socket, this is not a keeper. Down the road there will be problems.

In a recording situation this amp gets a classic Marshall sound. PERIOD. Plug a Les Paul into it - put an SM57 or a Sennheiser 421 in front of a cabinet and voilà - She sounds as close to most recorded plexi's as you'll ever need...

Amazing amp. Just want i was looking for without breaking the bank. This thing gets loud!I practice with it set on 1 and totally rock the house on 3 to 5.I have it connected to a 4X12 cab and with my Ibanex Apex2 plugged in, it sounds like a rig that should cost twice or three times as much.

I have had my C5H for about 4 or 5 months now and am very pleased with it. I currently have the low watt head/cab stacks from Vox and Fender and the Marshall is by far my favorite. I have to agree with all the other reviews - it's well built, loves pedals, and has the Marshall tone. I am just in love with the warm, dry tone, especially with my ES335. However, I find my single coils sound awesome too.

On the downside, mine came with a noisy tube out of the box. I replaced the EL84 with a new mallard and some NOS 12AX7s. Problem solved. Also, took some break in (on the cab) before the tone controls made much impact. Even now, though, the EQ settings do not make a "dramatic" change to the sound. They more or less help shape or tweak the already warm tone.

I am anxious to try another cabinet - I am still using the 1x10 matching cab with a UK Greenback. I elevated the stack off the floor as I find it to be a little boomy. I have pretty much put my pedal board away and only use a carbon copy delay and fat sandwich distortion. I love it!

Whether you're recording or playing live, this amp is great. For all you players who are tired of the sound engineer telling you to turn your amp down, get one of these! For all you sound engineers who are tired of tell guitar players to turn down, suggest one of these. Great job Marshall!
Less is more. This amp is very musical and dynamic. It sounds like whatever you plug into it and reacts great to the dynamic of the player's hands. The Class 5 works well with a variety of cabinets. While I especially liked the voicing of it in a Rectifier 4x12 (Vintage 30s) cab, a Marshall 1960A cab and the Peavey Classic (4x10, 1x15 and 1x12) cabs, the matching Class 5 cabinet is absolutely perfect for it.
Built like a tank (and looks cool).
I bought this amp exclusively for recording expecting to use it once in a while. In fact, I ordered it without having seen or heard one. We started tracking a few "Marshall" tones and quickly realized this amp was extremely versitile and more than just a plexi tone.

With a humbcker equipped Les Paul into a 4x12 (two V30's, two GT12H's), it can nail Led Zep II and AC/DC style crunch. It does not really do clean, but you don't buy this amp for clean. I have also not found a decent setting for the single coils on my Tele, but I did not buy it for that, and have a Fender for that purpose. As a side note, there appear to be some very low cost mods out there to dial things in for single coils.

I also find that it takes pedals pretty well, in particular the old school, dirt cheap, everyone has owned one at one time or another Boss DS-1.

And for 5 watts, it's loud. I don't gig, and suspect it would not be loud enough to play with a band w/o PA support, but with everything dimed (which sounds great, BTW), no one will be napping in the next room. I actually run it through a Weber Mass attenuator to let me run the amp wide open at more family friendly levels.

All things considered, I am pretty pleased with this amp.
I won't ding it with a low score for lack of features, becuase it is what it is. A very simple, no frills, low wattage non-master volume amp.
Build quality thus far looks to be pretty solid. Time will tell.
It is a steal.

Really nice Class A, five watt, all tube (valve) amp. If you don't have or don't want to buy other speakers, the Marshall Class 5 Combo offers all the above and a nice speaker for just a few dollars more.I got the head because I had the speakers; if I hadn't the combo would have made more sense (and it has a 16 ohm out put for a cbinet) but at some point, you will find, space becomes an issue, so the smaller head works best for me, even if the combo seems a better value, it doesn't fit my needs. Laarger is not always better.
Uless you want to play out doors to a couple of hudred people, this amp iwll do all you want it to. Five watts may not seem la lot, but you have to crank it up to get it to distort, and it can fill your house with real clean Marshall amp sounds long before it distorts. Having two 100 watt amps (Fender and Mesa Boogie) I thought this would make 1/20th of the sound, and nice little amp to practice with and won't wake the dog. Forget that, if you want distortion at low sound levels get a nice pedal. The difference between this amp and a 100 watt amp seems like two to one, not twenty to one I plug this amp into a Marshall 1960 4x12 300 watt guitar extension cabinet, and it sounds great. If you want more distortion, you might try a small speaker and maybe put a towel over it. I am really happy with mine set up the way it is. Also it is made in England, where they support decent wages, and care what you get. The amp has no built in effects and I use nothing, or a Marshall Bluesbreaker and Boss didigital delay with it (mostly nothing, if you want your fingers to learn how to do more work, don't get a lot of stuff to hide them.) Like Fender and Gibson, Marshall delivers quality that exceeds your expectations. you'e be glad you got this one.
